BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized by variable clinical manifestations. When located in the gingiva, this neoplasm may mimic common inflammatory lesions. The aim of this study was to report a case of atypical squamous cell carcinoma, in which the patient had no risk factors for the development of this neoplasm.
METHODS: A 61 year old Caucasian female was seen with a 3 month history of a rapidly growing, painful nodule in the gingiva adjacent to tooth #11. Clinical examination revealed a proliferative lesion in the vestibular marginal gingiva o

Leiomyoma is a type of benign smooth muscle neoplasm that is a common neoplasm of the uterus and gastrointestinal tract but rarely affects the head and neck region and is especially unlikely to affect the oral cavity. The diagnosis of leiomyoma is mainly determined by histopathological studies due to variation in its clinical appearance and symptoms. In the present paper we report two rare cases of gingival angioleiomyoma in the posterior maxilla and mandible. After total excision, hematoxylin-eosin and smooth muscle actin staining confirmed the diagnosis of angioleimyoma.

Malignant neoplasms metastatic to the gingivae are rare. Our review of the literature revealed only eight acceptable examples. We are reporting two additional cases. One patient was a 58-year-old man with an adenocarcinoma of the lung which metastasized bilaterally to the maxillary gingiva. The second patient was a 27-year-old man with a synovial sarcoma which metastasized to multiple sites in the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. Clinically, gingival metastatic lesions are most often confused with hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, giant-cell granuloma, and pepripheral fibroma. They usually occu

PURPOSE: Pyogenic granuloma is a relatively rare hyperplastic lesion of the oral tissues. Clinically it is heterogeneous and can be similar to malignant epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms. The treatment of choice is the surgical excision of the lesion. This approach often results in unpleasant gingival defects, especially when the pyogenic granuloma is located in the esthetic zone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report describes the clinical and histological findings of pyogenic granuloma diagnosed in the maxilla of a 24-year-old female, as well as the successful treatment of the mucogingival

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

BACKGROUND: Up to now, limited research has been done on a significant number of cases with all types of gingival lesion. Besides, the available literature does not provide reliable data on the epidemiology of gingival lesions, especially non-reactive lesions. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions in an Iranian population.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 1000 gingival biopsy samples during 22 years. All lesion types were evaluated in terms of location, clinical signs and symptoms, and patients' age and gender. The data w

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. It represents less than 10% of diagnosed intraoral carcinoma. Because of its close proximity to the teeth and periodontium, the tumour can mimic tooth-related benign inflammatory conditions. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with GSCC presenting as localised periodontitis.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally invasive benign neoplasm found exclusively in the maxillofacial region. The radiographic and clinical features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. A case of OM of the maxilla is described in a 19-year-old female, previously diagnosed as inflammatory gingival enlargement. Clinical, histological, radiographic, and computed tomographic (CT) scan assessments were done, which were confirmatory for OM. Surgical excision of the lesion was done. The patient was put on periodic recall, as the recurrence rate of the lesion was high. The bi

A female patient in her 70s with a medical history of myelodysplastic neoplasm presented to the outpatient department with a 4-month history of toothache, painful gingival swelling and loose teeth that required extractions. Intraoral examination revealed a swelling in the lower anterior portion of the mandible, which displaced her teeth. Incisional biopsy of the gingival lesion revealed dense aggregates of atypical round cells which stained positive for CD43, CD45, CD33 and myeloperoxidase, consistent with myeloid sarcoma. Subsequent bone marrow biopsy displayed hypercellular marrow with immat

A series of 3,5-bis(benzylidene)-4-piperidones 2a-u were prepared as candidate cytotoxic agents. In general, the compounds are highly toxic to human gingival carcinoma (Ca9-22), human squamous carcinoma-2 (HSC-2) and human squamous carcinoma-4 (HSC-4) neoplasms, but less so towards non-malignant human gingival fibroblast (HGF), human periodontal ligament fibroblast (HPLF) and human pulp cells (HPC), thereby demonstrating tumour-selective toxicity. A further study revealed that most of the compounds in series 2 were more toxic to the human Colo-205 adenocarcinoma cell line (Colo-205), human HT2

Myofibromas are benign neoplasms of myofibroblastic origin and rarely encountered in the oral cavity. Myofibroma may frequently grow rapidly leading to suspicion of malignancy. This may lead to a tendency for aggressive management. The histopathology of this tumour has similarity with other spindle cell tumours and often requires immunohistochemical staining for diagnosis. Here, we present a case of myofibroma in a 15-year-old female patient who reported with an aggressive gingival swelling and discuss the various histopathological differential diagnosis.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the oral cavity, a rare mesenchymal tumor exhibiting smooth-muscle differentiation, is extremely uncommon in childhood. The most frequent location of childhood LMS is the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the stomach. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of leiomyosarcoma affecting the gingival tissues and mandible of a 9-year-old girl with peculiar clinical, microscopic, and radiographic features. Clinical and radiographical examinations revealed a gingival growth affecting the primary mandibular right first molar with inflammatory features. The lesion was

Gingival angioleiomyoma are rarely encountered lesions and most of these lesions are excised in toto in view of reactive gingival epulitic lesions. However, due to the vascular nature of these lesions, many a times surgeons experience unexpected hemorrhage and require extensive hemostatic management. A preoperative diagnosis is a must for these lesions and at least color imaging techniques can be utilized to know its vascular nature and preoperative tumor embolization can be done to be on the safer side. Also histopathological dilemma can occur due to the varied types of vascular arrangement i

Intramucosal melanotic nevus with multiple polypoid presentations in oral cavity is rare; though single nevus is not uncommon. Nevi are benign proliferations of nevus cells either in the epithelium or in the subepithelial stroma. They are best categorized as hamartomas rather than true neoplasm. We present a case of intramucosal melanotic nevi in a 26-year-old male patient, which clinically resembled hereditary fibrous gingival enlargement.

BACKGROUND: The gingiva is a common site for neoplastic or non-neoplastic lesions. Neoplasms refer to progressive autonomous growth that can have either a benign or a malignant course. On the other hand, non-neoplastic lesions are mainly inflammatory, or occur as a reaction to some kind of irritation or lowgrade injury.
OBJECTIVES: Assessing the frequency distribution of gingival lesions is important to optimize oral health care services. The present study retrospectively analyzed the frequency distribution of gingival lesions on the basis of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of P

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. The clinical features of gingival SCC include alveolar bone loss and erythematous lesion. Therefore, gingival SCC sometimes presents as advanced periodontitis. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with gingival SCC after the extraction of molars presenting as being affected by localized severe periodontitis.
METHODS: The patient was a 61-year-old man whose chief complaint was pain in the left maxillary area. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed common findings of a periodon

BACKGROUND: Nerve sheath myxoma (NSM) is an extremely rare benign neoplasm in the oral cavity. This paper describes the first case, to our knowledge, of NSM in the gingival mucosa of an 84-year-old female patient.
METHODS: Intraoral examination revealed a painless and well-defined nodule in the lingual gingival mucosa of the right mandibular lateral incisor, which measured approximately 1.0 cm in diameter. The lesion was fully excised under local anesthesia, without intercurrences. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed in 5-microm sections for histopathologic analysis. Immunohistochemi

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POF), an extraosseous variant of the central odontogenic fibroma, is considered an uncommon benign gingival lesion with a small recurrence rate. Clinically, it mimics a variety of benign neoplasms, metastases and reactive lesions, but it is most commonly confused with the peripheral ossifying fibroma. In this report, we describe a healthy 32-year-old male who was seen with a recurrent POF of the right maxilla. The surgical excision site was repaired using a free palatal graft, leading to a favorable outcome in an esthetic region of the oral cavity.
