OBJECTIVE: To perform a retrospective analysis examining the incidence and prognosis of glioma patients with leptomeningeal disease (LMD) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center over a 15-year period and correlate these findings with clinicopathologic characteristics.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of glioma patients with LMD at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center diagnosed from 2001 to 2016. Patients were identified through a keyword search of their electronic medical record and by ICD-9 codes.
RESULTS: One hundred three patients were identified with disseminated LMD and

Two children with achondroplasia and neurologic sequelae secondary to foramen magnum compression were found to have syringomyelia. In one patient, the cyst was associated with a subependymal glioma. These findings suggest that foramen magnum stenosis may lead to irreversible spinal cord damage.

CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old man was diagnosed with band or "bow tie" optic atrophy with a right homonymous hemianopia. Computerized tomography (CT) revealed a calcified lesion in the left hippocampus. Craniotomy and tumor resection were performed. The biopsy revealed a subependymoma of the temporal horn of the left ventricular system.
DISCUSSION: Optic tract lesions are uncommon clinical entities, in which homonymous hemianopia and contralateral band optic atrophy are characteristic. Subependymomas are infrequent and benign tumors that are typically associated with the ventricular system.

A 34-year-old, previously healthy man died suddenly and unexpectedly. The autopsy showed brain and pulmonary edema, numerous small meningeal meningiomas, bilateral and symmetrical juxtaventricular meningiomas, and a well-demarcated gray tan tumor in the medulla oblongata and upper cervical spinal cord. The latter tumor was a subependymoma with features of ependymoma in places. The authors describe and discuss the characteristics of this rare central nervous system tumor, its histogenesis, and its coexistence with other intracranial tumors. The possible mechanisms of death in the present case i

Endocrinopathies are relatively rare causes of erectile dysfunction. Cases of hyperprolactinemia and pituitary adenomas have been previously reported. We present a clinical case of a 27-year-old male with suspected infertility and recent symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Additional radiological and endocrinologic workup revealed underlying subependymoma, which was expanding in the sellar and suprasellar regions, causing pressure against the pituitary gland. The resulting endocrine disorder caused problems that were subjectively at first manifested mainly as erectile dysfunction. The case is an

We present a case of a symptomatic subependymoma (SE) in a young. The patient was a 20-year-old female who suffered from severe headache and vomiting. Precontrast CT scans revealed a large spotty-calcified isodensity mass lesion in the right anterior lateral ventricle, showing scarce contrast enhancement at the center of the mass and with marked hydrocephalus. MRI demonstrated the lesion as slightly hypo-intensity on T1-weighted image, hyper-intensity on T2-weighted image. On FLAIR imaging, the lesion indicated remarkable hyperintensity and was clearly distinguishable from surrounding brain pa

Next-generation sequencing of pediatric gliomas has revealed the importance of molecular genetic characterization in understanding the biology underlying these tumors and a breadth of potential therapeutic targets. Promising targeted therapies include mTOR inhibitors for subependymal giant cell astrocytomas in tuberous sclerosis, BRAF and MEK inhibitors mainly for low-grade gliomas, and MEK inhibitors for NF1-deficient BRAF:KIAA fusion tumors. Challenges in developing targeted molecular therapies include significant intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity, highly varied mechanisms of treat

The MRI appearance of intraventricular neoplasms is often nonspecific, however knowledge of patient age and tumor location facilitates the formulation of a differential diagnosis. Imaging and pertinent clinical features of the following intraventricular neoplasms are reviewed: ependymoma, subependymoma, central neurocytoma, subependymal giant cell tumor, choroid plexus tumors, medulloblastoma, meningioma, chordoid glioma, rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor, central nervous system lymphoma, and metastasis.

Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGCA) is a benign, slow-growing glial tumor that manifests with signs and symptoms of obstructive hydrocephalus most often in adolescent patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Neonatal highly aggressive SEGCA is very rare. We report a 5-month-old child with TSC presenting with a cystic mass lesion in the left frontal lobe as well as multiple other periventricular masses. After initial conservative treatment, the child was readmitted with intractable seizures, a massive increase in the size of the left frontal lobe tumor and obstructive hydrocephal

The results of the magnetic resonance imaging of three patients with proven tuberous sclerosis will be discussed. Cortical tubers and subcortical areas of junctional dysmyelination can be demonstrated clearly by MRI, whereas small calcifications may be missed because of low contrast if the chosen slice thickness should be too large. It is suggested that MRI should be applied to those patients with suspected tuberous sclerosis, in which CT has failed to demonstrate typical subependymal calcifications and to those in which doubts about the definite diagnosis remain. This should be done in order

Subependymomas are benign tumors that occur predominantly in the ventricular system. We described a case of a 44-year-old female with a large subtentorial mass which compressed the brain stem and fourth ventricle. Complete surgical excision of the tumor was achieved. The tumor composed of collections of cytologically bland cells with round to oval nuclei set within wide expanses of a delicate fibrillar matrix, and extensive microcystic changes were found. The tumor demonstrated positive staining with GFAP and S-100 protein, and did not stain with antibodies to Neu-N or Progesterone receptor, p

The authors report a rare case of tuberous sclerosis associated with pineal region mixed glioma. A 38-year-old woman with tuberous sclerosis, who had a past history of left nephrectomy and tumorectomy of the right kidney for bilateral renal angiomyolipomas, was admitted because of headache and ataxic gait. CT scan and cerebral angiography suggested a pineal region tumor. Suboccipital craniectomy and partial removal of the tumor was performed via infratentorial supracerebellar approach. Microscopic examination revealed mixed oligodendroglioma and astrocytoma. It is well known that tuberous scle

We reviewed the imaging characteristics of 51 consecutive cases of cerebral glioma with multiple foci of involvement. In 26 patients, multifocality was present at the initial diagnosis, whereas in 25, it developed at a later stage. Thirty-two patients were studied with MRI, 13 with CT, and six with both imaging techniques. In 14 cases, no apparent dissemination route was identified; these tumors were presumed to be true multicentric gliomas. In the rest of the cases, various patterns of spread from a primary site were evident or suggested, and the tumors were denoted as multifocal. The most fr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and neurofibromatosis (NF) are neurocutaneous disorders often encountered by neurologists in clinical practice. This article aims to familiarize adult and pediatric neurologists with common features of these disorders and headache specific evaluation and management.
RECENT FINDINGS: Non-malignant intracranial tumors in TSC include cortical tubers (glioneuronal hamartomas), subependymal nodules or subependymal giant-cell astrocytomas (SEGA). Headache disorders in TSC are largely secondary and can cause headaches due to increased intracranial

Trichorhinophalangeal syndromes (TRPSs) are rare hereditary syndromes with autosomal dominant inheritance. Patients exhibit abnormalities including bulbous pear-shaped nose, broad columella, and long and flat philtrum, fine, sparse, brittle, slow-growing scalp hair, skeletal abnormalities, and short stature. Three families; age at subependymoma surgery, pathogenic TRPS1(NM_014112.5) variant, and subependymoma number are described.

BACKGROUND: Ring-shaped lateral ventricular nodules (RSLVNs) are commonly considered as benign asymptomatic lesions, which are sporadically detected as incidental findings on routine brain magnetic resonance imaging scans. Despite their not irrelevant frequency, the exact biological nature of these lesions remains largely unknown due to the lack of histopathologic studies. Here we present the clinical, neuroradiologic, and histopathologic findings of an unusual case of symptomatic multiple RSLVNs.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 44-year-old otherwise healthy man presented with a recent history of headach

Subependymomas most commonly appear as a mass in the fourth ventricle of adults; these tumors are rare but must be considered in the differential diagnosis of a lesion arising in this location. We report a case of a fourth ventricule subependymoma.
