Gliosarcomas are uncommon variants of glioblastoma bearing the histological hallmark of two distinct tumor components (high grade glial and sarcomatous). They share similarities with glioblastomas as far as clinico-epidemiological and prognostic factors are concerned. They are commonly cortically-surfacing lesions occurring mostly in the supratentorial compartment. Intraventricular location of a gliosarcoma is very uncommon and reported only once before. We report one such case where the lesion was subependymal and protruded into the ventricle giving the appearance of a truly intraventricluar

A heterogeneous group of CNS tumors are characterized by mixed neuroepithelial and mesenchymal features. Glial tumors manifesting this phenomenon are referred to as gliosarcoma. These tumors are usually mistaken for cerebral metastases or meningioma at operation. Their histological studies have revealed an admixture of gliomatous and sarcomatous tissues, which leads to a biphasic pattern. The mesenchymal component can present in different forms such as fibrosarcoma, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, chondro-osteogenic, and myogenic differentiation, as well as angiosarcomatous and liposarco

Suramin inhibits the stimulation of brain tumor deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis in vitro at concentrations of 200 to 400 mg/ml. This report evaluates suramin in the rodent 9L tumor model. Survival was analyzed by treating 10 tumor-bearing animals with suramin (7 mg/kg/d intraperitoneally) for 7 days, beginning 1 week after implantation, and compared with 20 untreated animals. Tissue distribution was analyzed with reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography in homogenized organs of normal animals. Tumor concentration was measured over time in animals treated with a range of suramin doses,

A 70 year old woman underwent an anterior rightsided temporal lobectomy for a mixed glioblastoma-fibrosarcoma. Six months later, she presented with rightsided zygomatic and maxillary swellings, associated with rightsided ptosis, chemosis, and nerve palsies of the III, IV, VI, and VII cranial nerves. A computerized scan (CT) of the head revealed tumor erosion of the skull base of the right middle fossa with extension into the maxillary sinus. This was confirmed at surgery. Pathologic examination revealed a predominantly small cell anaplastic glioblastoma associated with sarcoma elements, simila

We discuss the molecular evolution of gliosarcoma, a mesenchymal type of glioblastoma (GBM), using the case of a 37-yr-old woman who developed two recurrences and an extracranial metastasis. She was initially diagnosed with isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type gliosarcoma in the frontal lobe and treated with surgery followed by concurrent radiotherapy with temozolomide. Five months later the tumor recurred in the left frontal lobe, outside the initially resected area, and was treated with further surgery and radiotherapy. Six months later the patient developed a second left frontal recurre

The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of a pediatric pineal gliosarcoma. Gliomas on the pineal region are uncommon, representing 0.4%-1% of all brain tumors. Furthermore, pediatric gliosarcomas are a very rare entity. We present a case of a 5-year-old girl, with a history of headache, vomiting, diplopia, and gait disturbances. A pineal tumor was found with pathology results consistent with a gliosarcoma. A total of 25 cases of pediatric gliosarcomas have been reported, none of them in pineal topography. Only 3 gliosarcomas were found in the pineal region, but these were found in a

OBJECTIVE: Gliosarcomas are rare, extremely high-grade, bimorphous malignant tumors of the central nervous system. Intraventricular location is extremely rare, and only a few case reports exist in the literature. The aim of our study is to review clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of this unique oncological entity and report this rare case of primary cystic intraventricular gliosarcoma (IVGS) with a mural nodule.
METHODS: A 23-year-old man had a 6-month history of headache and a single episode of generalized seizure. Examination revealed grade 1 papilledema. Brain magnetic resonanc

PURPOSE: Fractionated radiosurgery is being carried out in the clinic to improve the therapeutic ratio of single-dose radiosurgery using various fractionation schemes. Because there is a paucity of experimental radiobiological data in the literature on the tumor response and late-responding normal tissue of critical intracranial structures to radiosurgery, the present animal study was designed to compare the response following a single high dose of radiation with that obtained from calculated fractionated doses of radiosurgery.

A 51-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of malaise. MRI revealed a large solid and cystic lesion with ring enhancement measuring 6.5 cm in diameter in the right frontal lobe. Histologically, the tumor consisted of various components: diffuse growth of atypical astrocytic cells consistent with glioblastoma, fascicular proliferation of atypical spindle cells such as fibrosarcoma, clusters of primitive neuronal cells, and foci of ependymal cells. The sarcomatous component also focally exhibited chondroid and osteoid differentiation. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells in the primitive ne

Gliosarcomas represent about 2% of glioblastoma multiforme (WHO grade IV). They have mixed features of glial and sarcomatous components. The clinical presentation and prognosis are similar to glioblastoma. Between 1997 and 2006, 16 patients with intracranial gliosarcoma were treated in the Department of Neurosurgery in Kiel, Germany. Median age was 63 years (52-79 years). Eleven patients were men and five were women. Six tumors were in the frontal lobe, four in the temporal lobe, three parietal, two in the thalamic area and one in the occipital lobe. Pre-operatively, in two patients, we could

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF I) is the most common hereditary syndrome predisposing to neoplasia. We report the third case in the literature, documenting the combination of gliosarcoma with NF I. The patient's son was known at our center because of a history of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) with NF I. A 48-year-old man who had a number of café-au-lait spots with neurofibroma since birth presented with severe headache. Neuroradiological studies revealed a cystic tumor of the right temporal lobe of high grade nature. Surgical excision was performed and the tumor was found to be located on

BACKGROUND: We summarize 5 cases of primary gliosarcoma with widespread extracranial metastases including our case. The glial components are eliminated due to the needs of the living environment in the process of parasitism and survival of brain glioma-sarcoma cells in lung metastasis.
METHODS: A PubMed search using the keywords "gliosarcoma" and "extracranial metastases" was performed followed by a review of cited literature. Our case was a 50-year-old female presented with headache and dizziness. MRI examination showed that there was a cystic solid tumor in the right temporal lobe. The tumo

A very rare case of gliosarcoma with von Recklinghausen's disease is presented. A 51-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in March 1990, because of a 2-month history of personality change and left hemiparesis. Multiple neurofibroma over his whole body with many café au lait spots had been present since early childhood. His mother, brothers and children also had café au lait spots. Neurological examination on admission revealed memory disturbance, left homonymous hemianopsia and left hemiparesis. CT scan showed a large lobular lesion in the right temporoparietal region. The medial hypodens

Three cases of primary gliosarcoma (GS) were studied by immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) methods. All tumors occurred in the supratentorial regions of the body. No patient had a prior history of irradiation to the brain. All patients died of tumor within 1 year, and autopsies were performed in two cases. Microscopically, each of the three tumors showed a mixture of glioblastoma (GBM) and a sarcomatous component (SC), which resembled fibrosarcoma with various histological features. Numerous collagen and reticulin fibers were seen in the SC of al

This paper has two main purposes: (1) to report a rare case of paediatric gliosarcoma that invaded the surrounding orbit and (2) to demonstrate chlorpromazine injection as a potential treatment option for blind, painful eye caused by tumour invasion. A 12-year-old man who presented with headaches was found to have glioblastoma multiforme and it was excised and treated with radiation and chemotherapy. Seven months later, the tumour recurred as gliosarcoma, a rare variant of glioblastoma multiforme containing distinct gliomatous and sarcomatous components. In spite of treatment, the tumour progr

Gliosarcoma is an uncommon high-grade tumor which constitutes about 2% of all glioblastomas. These tumors have the histological hallmark of a biphasic pattern of high-grade glial and sarcomatous components. The histogenesis of these tumors is controversial. We report a case of primary gliosarcoma in an adult male with leiomyomatous differentiation and discuss the histogenesis as it appears in our case. Primary gliosarcomas of the brain are clinically challenging with a poor clinical outcome.

Gliosarcoma is a rare central nervous system tumor usually located in the supratentorial area. Here we report a rare case of a gliosarcoma that developed in the cerebellar hemisphere in a 70-year-old woman. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed an infratentorial mass of which radiological features were similar to those of glioblastoma. The tumor was diagnosed by pathology as a gliosarcoma. Though rare, gliosarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of infratentorial tumors with radiological features of glioblastoma or metastasis in

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical, imaging, and pathological features of gliosarcoma.
METHODS: The clinical data of 14 patients with gliosarcoma confirmed by surgery and pathology at our hospital between 2010 and 2021 were analyzed retrospectively, and the relevant literature was reviewed.
RESULTS: In all 14 cases, the gliosarcoma was located in the supratentorial brain parenchyma and involved a single lesion. There were more male patients (64.3%) than female patients (35.7%), and 57.1% of all the patients were 40-60 years of age. The prognosis of all 14 patients was poor, and the avera
