Rising global hail damage potential in a warming world.

Anthropogenic climate change (ACC) is expected to modify severe convective storms and their associated hazards, including hailstorms, a primary driver of weather-related economic losses1-4. Despite some research on the response of hailstorms to ACC, most studies have focused on regional-scale changes2-9, whereas global-scale assessments of hailstone size remain scarce. Here we show a 36.5-42.1% increase in global hailstorm-induced damage potential by the late twenty-first century, with the magnitude determined by the emission scenario. Our results arise from hailstone trajectory simulations co

Mosquito and global dengue cases in a warming world.

Dengue presents a significant global health challenge, affecting 50-100 symptomatic infections every year and placing immense strain on healthcare systems in tropical and subtropical regions. However, future projections of dengue infections in a warming world remain unclear. We used the support vector machine (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN) models with Aedes mosquitoes and dengue records from 1960 to 2019 to comprehensively assess the effects of climate change and socioeconomic conditions on the distribution of mosquitoes and the global dengue incidence rate. The SVM and ANN models w

Heat Stress Nephropathy: An Emerging Epidemic of Global Warming.

Climate change has led to global warming since the last century, which has adverse health consequences. Heat stress nephropathy (HSN) is such a disorder that is emerging as an epidemic because of heat exposure, dehydration, and shortage of drinking water. HSN has been suspected to occur in different parts of the world. Many cases of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) such as Mesoamerican nephropathy and Sri Lankan nephropathy are now being considered as HSN. Influences of agrochemicals (e.g., pesticides), heavy metals (e.g., cadmium, lead, arsenic, and fluoride), and genetic pol

Environmental Candida auris and the Global Warming Emergence Hypothesis.

Global warming was proposed to be a contributing cause for the nearly simultaneous emergence of different clades of Candida auris as a nosocomial pathogen in different continents. The global warming emergence hypothesis posits that C. auris existed in the environment prior to its clinical recognition and became pathogenic for humans because of thermal adaptation in response to climate change. The isolation of C. auris from two sites in the remote Andaman Islands establishes it as an environmental organism, a necessary condition for the hypothesis. The observation that one environmental isolate

Potential effect of global warming on mosquito-borne arboviruses.

If global warming occurs in California, daily mean temperatures may increase by 3 to 5 degrees C, precipitation patterns will change, and sea level may rise 1 m. Studies were done on effect of temperature changes on survival of Culex tarsalis Coquillett, the primary vector of western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses, in two regions where temperatures differed by 5 degrees C. Daily mortality of adult vectors increased by 1% for each 1 degree C increase in temperature. At 25 degrees C, only 5% of Cx. tarsalis survived for 8 or more days, the time required f

A transient global warming event during Earth's penultimate icehouse.

Deep-time hyperthermal/transient warming events provide critical analogs for modern climatic warming and its impacts. However, all ancient hyperthermals documented to date have occurred under greenhouse climate states, limiting their relevance for understanding the trajectory of present-day climate change. Here, we present conodont oxygen isotope data and climate modeling for the Kasimovian-Gzhelian Thermal Maximum (KGTM) at ~304 Ma. This transient warming event is inferred to have been marked by a ~7.5 ± 1 °C rise in global mean surface temperature and an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentra

Global warming amplifies atmospheric formaldehyde exposure and widens spatial inequality.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a globally distributed ambient air pollutant associated with respiratory disease, cancer, and premature mortality, with evidence of adverse health effects even at low ambient concentrations. As a major oxidation product of volatile organic compounds, atmospheric HCHO is strongly affected by natural sources such as vegetation and wildfires, which are highly sensitive to temperature and drought. However, its response to climate warming remains poorly constrained. Here, we develop a deep learning framework that extracts empirical climate sensitivities from more than a decad

Global warming impacts on lactating mammalian milk: A systematic review.

Climate change represents a significant loss of billions of dollars for the livestock sector, prompting researchers to investigate how global warming and heat stress impact dairy cow productivity. However, research on the effects of climate change on human health remains a knowledge gap. This systematic review aims to highlight the main findings of the impacts of global warming on the nutritional value of mammalian milk. We systematically reviewed seven databases from October 2024 to April 2025, excluding papers related to seasonal climate effects. Twenty-one eligible studies were selected in

Global warming in the twenty-first century: an alternative scenario.

A common view is that the current global warming rate will continue or accelerate. But we argue that rapid warming in recent decades has been driven mainly by non-CO(2) greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as chlorofluorocarbons, CH(4), and N(2)O, not by the products of fossil fuel burning, CO(2) and aerosols, the positive and negative climate forcings of which are partially offsetting. The growth rate of non-CO(2) GHGs has declined in the past decade. If sources of CH(4) and O(3) precursors were reduced in the future, the change in climate forcing by non-CO(2) GHGs in the next 50 years could be near

Advancing dialysis technology to reduce the impact on global warming.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Healthcare significantly impacts global warming, with nephrology and dialysis being major contributors. This has led to the emergence of the green dialysis movement. However, literature summarizing recent advances and providing clear implementation frameworks remains limited. RECENT FINDINGS: In this narrative review, we explore interventions that reduce the global footprint of dialysis. Through the conceptual framework of the Six W's of Sustainable Dialysis, we aim to facilitate the implementation of green dialysis initiatives by improving knowledge and raising awareness.

Global warming may increase the burden of obstructive sleep apnea.

High ambient temperatures are associated with reduced sleep duration and quality, but effects on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity are unknown. Here we quantify the effect of 24 h ambient temperature on nightly OSA severity in 116,620 users of a Food and Drug Administration-cleared nearable over 3.5 years. Wellbeing and productivity OSA burden for different levels of global warming were estimated. Globally, higher temperatures (99th vs. 25th; 27.3 vs. 6.4 °C) were associated with a 45% higher probability of having OSA on a given night (mean [95% confidence interval]; 1.45 [1.44, 1.47]). W

Implications of climate change (global warming) for the healthcare system.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Temperature-sensitive pathogenic species and their vectors and hosts are emerging in previously colder regions as a consequence of several factors, including global warming. As a result, an increasing number of people will be exposed to pathogens against which they have not previously needed defences. We illustrate this with a specific example of recent emergence of Cryptococcus gattii infections in more temperate climates. COMMENT: The outbreaks in more temperate climates of the highly virulent--but usually tropically restricted--C. gattii is illustrative of an a

Forest fire emissions in Portugal: a contribution to global warming?

A forecast of expected evolution of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) emissions in Portugal between 1988 and 2010 is presented. Predictions show that CO(2) emissions will almost double in the next twenty years. The equivalent potential CO(2) emissions from nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), for a time horizon of 20 years, is also presented. NO(x) and VOC emissions seem to make a significant contribution to the global warming potential of Portuguese emissions. Estimates of CO(2) emissions due to forest fires have been made, oriented towards the study of the Portuguese contributi

Global Warming and Prescribing: A Review on Medicines' Effects and Precautions.

INTRODUCTION: Global warming is slowly but surely becoming one of the greatest problems of the modern world. Heatwaves with extremely high temperatures and humidity changes are particularly dangerous as they can lead to increased mortality rates and increased side effects of certain medications. The goal of this study was to give a short review of the most critical issues healthcare professionals should be mindful of when it comes to prescription of medicines during high temperature periods. METHODS: A PubMed literature search was conducted in January 2021 in order to identify studies showing

An overview of heat stress relief with global warming in perspective.

Global warming seems more probable, whether as gradual warming or increased frequency of warmer episodes. The productivity of cattle in temperate countries will decline unless counteracting steps are adopted. The probability of pre-emptive breeding for maintaining temperate breed performance coupled with heat stress tolerance is too low to be adopted for counteracting warming. The expected warming will mostly involve temperature increases. These will indirectly affect radiant heat gain in animals owing to reduced radiant heat dissipation from the body by convective heat loss, which results in

Understanding solvation in the low global warming hydrofluoroolefin HFO-1234ze propellant.

Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), with zero ozone-depleting effect and very low global warming potential, are considered to be the next-generation high-pressure working fluids. They have industrial relevance in areas including refrigeration and medical aerosols. One major challenge expected in the replacement of existing working fluids with HFOs is the solubility and solvation of additives in such hydrophobic and oleophobic low dielectric semifluorinated solvents. The study of the solvation of chemistries that represent those additives by HFOs is, therefore, of great relevance. In this work, we syste
