Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and Pseudomonas bacteria affect tomato response to Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) herbivory.

Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most significant invasive and destructive pests worldwide, causing serious economic losses to the tomato industry. Rhizosphere microorganism, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Pseudomonas bacteria, can interact with plants individually or collectively to improve plant growth and resistance to pests and disease. However, the effects of AMF, Pseudomonas, and their interactions on plant responses to insect herbivores remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of single/dual inoculation with AMF (Fun

Diversity and Distribution of Glomoid and Non-Glomoid Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated With Solanaceae.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread root-associated fungi that contribute to plant nutrient acquisition and soil ecosystem processes. However, information on the distribution of Glomoid and non-Glomoid AMF associated with Solanaceae hosts in the northwestern Himalaya remains limited. The present study evaluated the diversity, distribution, and observed host occurrence patterns of AMF associated with tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), capsicum (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and black nightshade (Solanum nigrum). A total of 72 AMF morphotaxa representing 13 genera wer

Penicillium aculeatum pre-activated with cellulose and different phosphorus sources promotes maize growth, nutrition and mycorrhiza formation, and decreases Microdochium bolleyi root infection.

Microbial plant growth promoters often perform inconsistently under natural soil conditions most likely due to their poor establishment after inoculation. Here, we conducted a growth chamber pot experiment with maize using pre-activated inoculum of the P-solubilizing fungus Penicillium aculeatum to facilitate its establishment in a natural non-sterile agricultural soil. Hence, P. aculeatum was preincubated for one week in soil amended with cellulose as a C source and with different P sources, i.e. sewage sludge ash, Ca3(PO4)2, and no P fertilization as control. Control treatments of C and P so

An aeroponic system to characterize maize root exudates in relation to N and P nutrition and arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Root exudates play major roles in the recruitment of plant microbiota. The metabolic composition of root exudates varies according to plant developmental stage, nutrient availability, (a)biotic stresses, and interaction with the root-associated microbiota, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which play a key role in plant mineral nutrition and stress tolerance. While it is well established that AMF can perceive plant root exudate compounds, little is known about plant root exudate modifications in response to AMF inoculation. Here, we developed an aeroponic-based culture system suita

Fungal microbiota in peritoneal dialysis effluent related peritonitis patients by amplicon sequencing of internal transcribed spacer based on Oxford nanopore Technologies.

Fungal peritonitis (FP) is a rare and severe complication resulting from fungal infections of the peritoneum. It has recently garnered increased attention due to rising both incidence and potential mortality. Early recognition and rapid intervention are essential for improving patient outcomes, as untreated FP can progress to sepsis and multi-organ failure if not treated appropriately. Culture-negative fungal peritonitis is commonly observed, and its presence should be further considered. This study aimed to utilize Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing to investigate the fungal profil

Environmental variables associated with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi diversity in Ohio soybean agricultural systems.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a crucial role in crop productivity and agroecosystem processes. However, the composition of soil AMF communities and the factors associated with their diversity and distribution in Ohio remain poorly understood. We profiled both soil AMF and physico-chemical characteristics in 18 soybean fields across agricultural regions in Ohio. AMF sequences were recovered through amplicon sequencing of the 18S ribosomal gene coupled with PacBio technology. We detected 14 genera belonging to six families of the Glomeromycota. The family Glomeraceae accounted for 39%

Development of a high-throughput spore germination test to assess the toxicity of pesticides on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Pesticides are essential agricultural inputs that help securing crop yields. However, they can affect non-target soil microorganisms, including arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, that are potential indicators of the toxicity of pesticides on the soil microbiota. Here, we developed a fast-track high-throughput spore germination test, for AM fungi produced in vitro. This test allows the determination of EC50 values and the nature of the effects of pesticides on AM fungal spores (fungicidal or fungistatic). First, 19 active ingredients were tested on Rhizophagus intraradices MUCL 49410. Secondly,

The possible involvement of salicylic acid and hydrogen peroxide in the systemic promotion of phenolic biosynthesis in clover roots colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization can induce both the local and the systemic increase in phenolic accumulation in hosts. However, the signaling molecules responsible for the systemic induction is still unclear. In this study, a split-root rhizobox system was designed to explore these molecules, with one half of clover (Trifolium repense) roots colonized by AMF, Funneliformis mosseae (formerly known as Glomus mosseae), and the other not (NM/M). Plants with two halves both (M/M) or neither (NM/NM) inoculated were also established for comparison. The contents of phenols and the acc

Chemical armed allies promote plant resistance to pathogen: The contribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to an invasive weed.

Invasive weeds often possess strong resistance to biotic stresses, which causes huge ecological problems. Both plant growth regulators (PGRs) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi contribute to plant growth and resistance. However, their combined interactions in invasive plants' defense remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, the invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides was treated with gibberellins (GA) and paclobutrazol (PAC), inoculated with Clariodeoglous etunicatum to test its response to pathogenic fungi. We found that these two PGRs suppressed AM fungi colonization. Bo

Transcriptional snapshots provide insights into the molecular basis of arbuscular mycorrhiza in the model legume Medicago truncatula.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association between terrestrial plants and soil fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota is the most widespread beneficial plant-microbe interaction on earth. In the course of the symbiosis, fungal hyphae colonise plant roots and supply limiting nutrients, in particular phosphorus, in exchange for carbon compounds. Owing to the obligate biotrophy of mycorrhizal fungi and the lack of genetic systems to study them, targeted molecular studies on AM symbioses proved to be difficult. With the emergence of plant genomics and the selection of suitable models, an application o

Rhizophagus irregularis modulates neighbour-primed defences in Medicago truncatula against foliar pathogens via common mycelial network-mediated inter-plant signals.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous root symbionts that form common mycelial networks (CMN), linking multiple plants underground. CMN are thought to contribute to information exchange between plants and to neighbour-primed defences, but the transcriptomic and metabolomic responses of receiver plants connected through CMN remain poorly understood. In addition, the confounding effects of hyphal damage caused by CMN disconnection have not been clearly resolved. To assess the contribution of CMN integrity to neighbour-primed plant defences, we used the model AMF Rhizophagus irregular

Hyphosphere interactions: P-solubilizing fungi modulate AMF phosphatase activity and mycorrhizal symbiosis via exudate-mediated communication.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbiotic associations with plant roots, enhancing water and nutrient absorption. Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can solubilize and mineralize phosphorus, an essential nutrient with low bioavailability, and eventually interact with AMF. However, the understanding of how they interact in the hyphosphere, where root influence is absent, remains limited. Furthermore, the effect of PSF on the phosphatase activity of AMF, related to the P efficiency in acquisition and utilization, within the hyphosphere and mycorrhizosphere zones, remains unclear. Biological defence against cadmium stress in wheat with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Trichoderma: Synergistic effects on plant and soil health.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils presents a serious threat to crop productivity, soil health, and ecological sustainability. This study aims to elucidate the synergistic potential of two beneficial microorganisms-Funneliformis mosseae (Fm), an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), and Trichoderma harzianum (Th)-in mitigating Cd-stress in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under controlled conditions. Unlike previous studies that examined these microorganisms individually, this research focuses on their combined application to explore potential interactive effects on plant and soil hea

Soil redox potential and plant species identity likely affect root-associated fungi in salt marshes.

Root-associated fungi (RAF) are important for plant performance because they form beneficial, neutral, or pathogenic relationships with their hosts, thus regulating nutrient uptake, stress tolerance, and overall plant fitness. At the transition from marine to terrestrial ecosystems, salt marshes are shaped by strong environmental gradients and provide vital ecosystem services such as climate regulation and coastal protection, yet RAF remain poorly understood in these systems. Therefore, we examined the community structure and abundance along this ecotone of RAF in general, and arbuscular mycor

Fungal spatial organization predominates over grapevine host effects in shaping transcriptional programs of Rhizophagus irregularis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) exhibit strong spatial organization, with the intraradical mycelium (IRM) interacting with host roots and the extraradical mycelium (ERM) exploring soil. However, the putative contributions of fungal spatial organization and/or host genotype to transcriptional regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we analysed the transcriptomic profiles of Rhizophagus irregularis in the intraradical mycelium (IRM) of ten grapevine rootstocks, while the extraradical mycelium (ERM) transcriptome was obtained from a pooled sample representing all rootstocks. By integrating

Techniques and Strategies for the Conservation of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis between fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota and the roots of terrestrial plants is fundamental for nutrient and water absorption, thereby improving plant nutritional efficiency. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) influence key ecological processes, such as nutrient cycling and carbon stabilization in soil, making them crucial to agricultural sustainability. AMF conservation is carried out using various techniques. One of the most common is the use of trap crops, where host plants that favor efficient fungal colonization are selected. This method allows for mainta

The influence of intercropping Paris polyphylla with Polygonatum cyrtonema or Ganoderma lucidum on rhizosphere soil microbial community structure and quality of Paris polyphylla.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged monoculture cultivation of Paris polyphylla has been linked to challenges such as disruption of rhizosphere soil microbial balance and deterioration in crop quality. Intercropping has emerged as a viable strategy to address these issues. METHODS: In the present study, monoculture of P. polyphylla (PP) served as the control, while two intercropping systems were implemented: P. polyphylla with Polygonatum cyrtonema (PPPC) and P. polyphylla with Ganoderma lucidum (PPG). The objective was to evaluate the P. polyphylla quality, soil physicochemical properties, and the struc

Local and systemic mycorrhiza-induced protection against the ectoparasitic nematode Xiphinema index involves priming of defence gene responses in grapevine.

The ectoparasitic dagger nematode (Xiphinema index), vector of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), provokes gall formation and can cause severe damage to the root system of grapevines. Mycorrhiza formation by Glomus (syn. Rhizophagus) intraradices BEG141 reduced both gall formation on roots of the grapevine rootstock SO4 (Vitis berlandieri×V. riparia) and nematode number in the surrounding soil. Suppressive effects increased with time and were greater when the nematode was post-inoculated rather than co-inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus. Using a split-root system, decreased X.
