Percutaneous aspirates from intact Bartholin's gland cysts (12) and abscesses (34) were examined for bacteria and genital mycoplasmas. Aspirates from 10 of the 12 patients with Bartholin's gland cysts were sterile. Aspirates from the other two cysts contained organisms that are part of the vaginal microbial flora. Anaerobic gram-negative cocci of the genus Veillonella are generally normal flora of the oropharynx and upper respiratory tract. When isolated in clinical specimens, these bacteria are usually regarded as commensal organisms rather than as pathogens. We report a case of spinal osteomyelitis in which Veillonella parvula was isolated in pure culture from bone as well as blood. Osteomyelitis of the spine due to anaerobic bacteria may occur more frequently than has been recognized, and anaerobic cultures of biopsy specimens should be routinely performed.

The study was aimed at comparing the efficacy of disinfection of root canals with periapical radiolucencies when treated with either antibiotics/steroid medicaments (Ledermix or Septomixine) or a calcium hydroxide paste (Calasept). Seventy-five episodes of clinically relevant anaerobic bacterial bacteremia observed in cancer patients were reviewed. Gastrointestinal (22.7%), hematological (22.7%) and female genital tract (18.6%) cancers were the most common underlying malignant diseases. Aspiration of exudate through an open perforation was performed in 183 patients with chronic otitis media. The pus was cultured aerobically and anaerobically. Aerobes only were isolated from 71 patients (39%); 20 patients (11%) had only anaerobes; and 91 patients (50%) had both aerobes and anaerobes. Only 1 specimen had no growth. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of anaerobic blood culture in pediatric patients by comparing the detection rate and distribution of bacteria between aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 11,664 blood cultures obtained from children under the age of 14 between January 2013 and June 2020. The positive rate of total, aerobic, and anaerobic blood culture, as well as the species distribution of each blood culture bottle, were investigated.
RESULTS: The positive rate of blood culture was 2.4 % (N = 281).
