Meigs' syndrome and adult-type granulosa cell tumor.

OBJECTIVE: Adult-type granulosa cell tumors (GCT) are sex cord-stromal tumors and often accompanied with abdominal distention and hyperestrogenism-related symptoms. Adult-type GCT-presenting ascites and pleural effusion is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old perimenopausal woman presented with abdominal distention and abnormal vaginal spotting. Ultrasound and abdominal computed tomography showed a complex cystic mass in the left ovary accompanied with bilateral pleural effusion and ascites. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, left pelvic

Rare virilizing granulosa cell tumor in an adolescent.

Hormone-producing malignancies are rare in children or adolescent patients: Only 0.1% of all ovarian tumors and 4-5% of granulosa cell tumors occur in the sexually non-active ages. Granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) are sex cord-stromal tumors of the ovary, representing 7-8% of all ovarian neoplasms. A total of 95% of all GCTs are adult-type, and only 5% are diagnosed as juvenile-type GCT. A majority of children with juvenile-type GCT present with isosexual precocious pseudopuberty due to excessive estrogen production, although virilizing, testosterone-producing, juvenile-type GCTs are rare, occurri

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor associated with Ollier disease.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) is a rare neoplasm of childhood. Interestingly, it is known to be associated with Ollier disease, which is a rare bone disease characterized by multiple enchondromatosis. There is paucity of literature about the co-occurence of these two conditions. However, this association is noteworthy because these two conditions share a common pathogenesis. We report a case of JGCT in a 2.5-year-old female child in which multiple enchondromas mimicking bony metastasis were an incidental finding during routine workup for tumor staging, thus leading to a diagnosis of Oll

Isolated FSH deficiency revealing a granulosa cell tumor.

We report a case of a 41-year-old woman with a recent secondary amenorrhea and infertility. The initial assessment ruled out premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome and led to suspect a hypothalamo-pituitary cause. However, the unusual hormone pattern with a very low level of FSH, normal levels of LH and estradiol, associated with a positive progesterone test suggested the presence of a FSH inhibiting factor: the unexpectedly high levels of inhibin B and AMH were suggestive of a granulosa cell tumor as showed by the radiologic findings. This prompted a surgical exploration, which

Testicular juvenile granulosa cell tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile granulosa cell tumors of the testis are rare gonadal stromal tumors of the pediatric age. They represent the most common neoplasms of the testis in the first 6 months of life. A testicular cystic mass is detected, or it can appear as an abdominal or inguinal mass. Differential diagnosis for testicular tumors at this age includes teratoma, simple cyst, epidermoid cyst, lymphangioma and testicular torsion. Association with ambiguous genitalia and sex chromosome abnormalities has been reported. Orchiectomy alone is recommended, because no case of metastasis or recurrence has

Testicular juvenile granulosa cell tumor: a case report.

The Testicular Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumor (JGCT) is a rare testicular neoplasm that appears in the first months of life as a painless testicular mass. Following an accurate radiological ultrasound diagnosis, through which the cystic appearance of the lesion is observed, and histological confirmation, showing follicular growth pattern and an immunoreactivity for inhibin, the treatment process involves, when feasible, conservative surgery. We present the case of a 2-months old infant with a bilateral JGCT of the testis and we review the classical findings of the patology.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor associated with Ollier disease.

Prior case reports have described synchronous ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) and enchondromatosis in patients with Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome. We present a case of a juvenile granulosa cell tumor with an IDH1 somatic mutation identified in the ovarian tissue in a 15-year-old female who presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding, several months of irregular menses, and a large multicystic adnexal mass. Multiple mixed lytic and sclerotic lesions were identified in the bones of the pelvis on imaging studies obtained during the work-up of her abdominal mass. Like previous rep

Pregnancy concomitant with metastatic adult granulosa cell tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic adult granulosa cell tumor of the ovary is rarely encountered with pregnancy. CASE REPORT AND RESULTS: Primigravida (26 years) presented at 20 weeks of gestation with acute abdomen and clinical evidence of supraclavicular lymphadenopathy and ascites. She was diagnosed of adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) of the right ovary following right salpingoophrectomy done 1 month prior to conception. Fine needle aspiration cytology of supraclavicular lymph node, revealed it to be a metastatic AGCT. Chemotherapy was given antepartum and she delivered a healthy preterm baby at 30

Galactorrhea-associated granulosa cell tumor in a child.

Granulosa cell tumor of the ovary is a rare form of ovarian cancer in children. An 11-year-old girl was admitted with complaints of galactorrhea and abdominal mass. Abdomino-pelvic ultrasound and computed tomography revealed an ovarian tumor. Her prolactine and estradiol levels were increased but luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone were decreased. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a giant solid mass, which was completely removed and determined as juvenile granulosa cell tumor. The clinical, hormonal, and radiological findings and the therapy of galactorrhea associated with gr

Sonographic and clinical findings of granulosa cell tumor.

BACKGROUND: Granulosa cell tumor (GCT) accounts for roughly 1.5% of all ovarian neoplasms and 5-10% of ovarian cancers. GCT, which may have profound end-organ effects, has attracted a significant amount of attention despite its rarity. This tumor is rare, and difficult to diagnose before operation. Until now, no specific sonographic findings have been reported. METHODS: Twelve cases of pathologically proven GCTs were diagnosed from June 1985 to March 1993. Nine of those cases had preoperative sonographic pictures taken. RESULTS: Eight out of the nine cases tested exhibited a complex multicys

Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumors of the Ovary.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and pathologic features of ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumors (JGCTs). METHODS: Clinical data, histopathologic observations, immunohistochemical results, FOXL2 mutation status, and follow-up information of 7 JGCT cases were studied. RESULTS: The patients most commonly presented with abdominal distension and pain (5 cases), followed by precocious puberty (1 case) and a pelvic mass (1 case). Six patients had stage I disease, and 1 had stage IV disease. The microscopic examinations typically showed lobular growth punctuated by variably sized and shaped fol

Granulosa cell tumor of the testis in a newborn.

Testicular neoplasms are uncommon tumors of childhood. These tumors comprise the germ cell tumors, and other tumors that may originate from histological testicular components, which are unrelated to the germinal lineage. Among the latter are the sex cord-stromal tumors (SCST), an important entity in newborns. SCSTs comprise, among others, granulosa cell tumors, which are more common in the ovary, but in rare cases may develop in the testis. The prognosis is excellent since it is universally benign. Diagnosis, which is sometimes challenging, is usually made after orchiectomy and pathological ex

Granulosa cell tumor of testis: clinicopathological correlation of a rare tumor.

BACKGROUND: Granulosa cell tumor of testis is a rare tumor accounting for less than 4% of adult testicular tumors though they account for nearly 30% of childhood testicular tumors. Due to the rarity of these tumors, exact etiology, pathogenesis, prognostic factors and best treatment approach are not well known. The molecular events in pathogenesis of these stromal tumors have begun to unravel and these developments put forth a reasonable and scientific explanation for the association of these tumors with developmental anomalies like undescended testis. However, many questions remain unanswered

A late recurring and easily forgotten tumor: ovarian granulosa cell tumor.

Ovarian granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is a malignant tumor with slow progression. The recurrence of granulosa cell tumor often happens after 5 years, leading to a 'forgotten tumor' by the patient. We present the case of a 64-year-old woman with a presentation of left flank pain. An initial computed tomography scan revealed a single tumor with multiple adjacent organ invasions. Surgical intervention was prescribed and the pathological results revealed a metastatic granulosa cell tumor. We also review the literature for the follow-up and further management of this tumor.

Gonadal tumor with granulosa cell tumor features in an adult testis.

Granulosa cell tumor is almost exclusively an ovarian tumor. Rare cases of granulosa cell tumor have been reported involving the testes. We report a testicular gonadal stromal tumor with granulosa cell differentiation in a 54-year-old white man. The tumor was discovered by an ultrasound evaluation for left hydrocele. The patient was clinically asymptomatic. On frozen section, the initial impression was a malignant lymphoma. Final histology on the orchiectomy specimen showed a gonadal stromal tumor with granulosa cell features. Immunohistochemical studies excluded malignant lymphoma and germ ce

Mucinous cystadenoma coexisting with adult granulosa cell tumor in the ovary: is it a composite tumor or heterologous mucinous elements in a granulosa cell tumor?

We herein report a rare tumor combination of mucinous cystadenoma and an adult granulosa cell tumor in the same ovary of a 50-year-old woman. Ultrasound examination showed a multicystic mass in the left ovary. Histologically it showed 2 components that were intimately admixed. One was composed of cysts lined by mucinous epithelium of the intestinal type that was strongly positive for cytokeratin-20 and cytokeratin-7. The other was a granulosa cell tumor of the adult type in which the tumor cells showed microfollicular, sheets, and trabecular patterns. They were positive for calretinin, α-inhib

TRPV2 regulates cell fate in the human granulosa-like tumor cell line KGN: implications for granulosa cell tumors and cannabidiol.

BACKGROUND: The transient receptor potential vanilloid 2 (TRPV2) channel is known to have strong species-dependent activation modes and divers functions. Based on previous results, which showed expression by human ovarian granulosa cells, we studied human TRPV2 in human granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) and derived cells (KGN cells). GCTs are rare ovarian tumors, for which neither specific therapies, nor adequate markers are available. METHODS: We analyzed primary GCTs, including a panel of 63 GCT samples, and KGN cells. We performed immunohisto-/cytochemistry, RT-PCR, Western blotting and measurem
