Response diversity increases functional but decreases compositional stability of grassland communities.

The insurance hypothesis of biodiversity assumes that biodiversity increases ecosystem stability when functionally redundant species exhibit distinct responses to environmental changes, allowing some species to compensate for the loss of others. However, empirical evidence remains scarce. Using a novel approach to quantify the responses of 96 plant species to land use, we tested the hypothesis combining field data with a common garden experiment. By subjecting transplanted grassland plant communities to different land-use intensities, we quantified response diversity (defined as the variabilit

Consensus land-cover mapping improves grassland classification in European mountain landscapes.

Accurate land-cover information is essential for biodiversity monitoring, yet existing 10-m global and continental land-cover datasets vary in accuracy and thematic consistency, particularly for grasslands in complex mountain environments. We assessed six state-of-the-art land-cover products (Dynamic World, ESA WorldCover, Esri Land Cover, Corine Land Cover+ Backbone, ELC10, S2GLC) across the Alps and Carpathians and developed three consensus maps using weighted voting, accuracy-confusion weighting, and an accuracy-weighted Random Forest ensemble. All datasets were validated against an indepen

Detection Range of Acoustic Monitoring Devices in an Open Grassland Ecosystem.

Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) is a novel method for estimating avian biodiversity, producing results comparable to traditional methods, such as point count surveys. However, uncertainty in the detection space around acoustic recording units (ARUs) can complicate monitoring designs and potentially lead to biased results. Therefore, understanding ARU detection space in different environments is essential to advancing the reliability of PAM for avian population monitoring. In this study, we used a distance-based broadcasting method at seven distances from ARUs in grassland systems in eastern

Establishing grassland mixtures on mine wastes - a two-year mesocosm study.

Plant growth on mine wastes is restricted by the lack of water, nutrients, phytotoxic responses and the absence of a seedbank. In a mesocosm study, we addressed the establishment of vegetation on metalliferous mine wastes from two seed mixtures. Besides the composition of the vegetation and the increase in plant cover and biomass over time, we studied concentrations of heavy metals in the shoot and analyzed the quantity of throughflow, its pH and EC to follow pollutant discharge. We hypothesized that the types of mine wastes and sown grasslands will affect species composition and the formation

Synergistic Effects of Grassland Fragmentation and Temperature on Bovine Rabies Emergence.

In 2007, common vampire bats were the source of the first outbreak of paralytic bovine rabies in Uruguay. The outbreak coincided in space and time with the fragmentation of native grasslands for monospecific forestry for wood and cellulose production. Using spatial analyses, we show that the increase in grassland fragmentation, together with the minimum temperature in the winter, accounts for the spatial pattern of outbreaks in the country. We propose that fragmentation may increase the connectivity of vampire bat colonies by promoting the sharing of feeding areas, while temperature modulates

Simulated heat waves affected alpine grassland only in combination with drought.

The Alpine region is warming fast, and concurrently, the frequency and intensity of climate extremes are increasing. It is currently unclear whether alpine ecosystems are sensitive or resistant to such extremes. We subjected Swiss alpine grassland communities to heat waves with varying intensity by transplanting monoliths to four different elevations (2440-660 m above sea level) for 17 d. Half of these were regularly irrigated while the other half were deprived of irrigation to additionally induce a drought at each site. Heat waves had no significant impacts on fluorescence (Fv /Fm , a stress

Soil Respiration Responses to Prolonged Warming Vary Seasonally in a Subarctic Grassland.

Northern ecosystems are warming rapidly, but the effects on soil carbon (C) dynamics are not fully understood. In particular, it is unclear whether warming effects on soil respiration (SR) -the primary source of atmospheric CO2 from terrestrial ecosystems- persist throughout the year or vary seasonally. While both summer and cold-season processes shape annual soil C fluxes, the long cold season, which dominates high-latitude regions, has received far less attention. Using a natural geothermal gradient in a subarctic grassland (+0°C to +10°C above ambient soil temperature), we assessed the effe

Effects of macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics on seed germination of temperate grassland species.

Macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics are widely used to control invertebrate pests in livestock, such as sheep. While anthelmintic effects on non-target animals, such as dung-dwelling insects, are well studied, effects on seed germination are largely unknown. Seeds can come into contact with anthelmintics either during passage through the gastro-intestinal tract of grazing animals or when anthelmintics are excreted with their dung into the environment, which may result in changed germination patterns. We used four commonly applied macrocyclic lactones to assess their effects on germination: moxid

Timing and Duration of Observation Periods of Foraging Behavior in Natural Grasslands.

The goals of this study were to evaluate the length of time grazing which should be monitored over a 24-h period to predict the grazing behavior of beef heifers within a season and determine the patterns of foraging activity over 24 h. A database was constructed between 2010 and 2012 for beef heifers managed under rotational grazing in a natural grassland. Grazing, rumination, and other activity times were assessed visually during 24 h on 15 occasions. Data were classified according to climatic seasons, generating 12 replicates in summer, 18 in spring, 24 in autumn, and 36 in winter. Treatment

[Application of near-infrared spectroscopy to management of vegetation for natural grassland].

Vegetation is a major index for monitoring the grassland condition and productivity. The change in vegetation directly reflects degradation and restoration of grassland ecosystem. It is important to monitoring the information of vegetation changes to prevent degradation and realize sustainable development of grassland. Predication of vegetation was often completed by field investigation and laboratory analysis in the past, and could not satisfy the needs for inspecting of grassland degradation and restoration. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid, convenient, high-efficiency, non-destr

Wind stilling shapes grassland water use efficiency by enhancing soil moisture retention.

Covering more than 40% of Earth's vegetated surface, grasslands critically regulate terrestrial carbon and water cycles. Their ecosystem water use efficiency (WUEeco), the ratio of carbon uptake to water loss, governs drought resilience in these water-limited ecosystems. While global terrestrial wind speed declined substantially from the 1960s to 2000s followed by a recovery in the subsequent decade, the extent and mechanisms of its influence on grassland WUEeco remain poorly understood. Using site observations, satellite data, Earth system models, and wind manipulation experiments, we found a

Arbuscular mycorrhizae mitigate negative impacts of soil biodiversity loss on grassland productivity.

Grassland degradation decreases ecosystem productivity and diminishes soil biodiversity, leading to the loss of beneficial microorganisms. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a critical role in ecosystem functioning, being a key link between plant and microbial communities, soil, and vegetation. Here, we evaluated the potential of increasing the productivity of degraded grassland by AMF inoculation. A gradient of soil biodiversity: complete sterilization, low, moderate, and high biodiversity was established using the dilution-to-extinction approach. Grassland microcosms under greenhouse co

Spatial structure in protected forest-grassland mosaics: Exploring futures under climate change.

In mosaic ecosystems, multiple land types coexist as alternative stable states exhibiting distinct spatial patterns. Forest-grassland mosaics are ecologically valuable, due to their high species richness. However, anthropogenic disturbances threaten these ecosystems. Designating protected areas is one approach to preserving natural mosaics. Such work must account for climate change, yet there are few spatially explicit models of mosaics under climate change that can predict its effects. We construct a spatially explicit simulation model for a natural forest-grassland mosaic, parameterized for

Anoxia-induced release of colloid- and nanoparticle-bound phosphorus in grassland soils.

Particle-facilitated transport is a key mechanism of phosphorus (P) loss in agroecosystems. We assessed contributions of colloid- and nanoparticle-bound P (nPP; 1-415 nm) to total P released from grassland soils receiving biannual poultry litter applications since 1995. In laboratory incubations, soils were subjected to 7 days of anoxic conditions or equilibrated at pH 6 and 8 under oxic conditions and then the extract was size fractionated by differential centrifugation/ultrafiltration for analysis of P, Al, Fe, Si, Ti, and Ca. Selected samples were characterized by transmission electron micr

Effects of grazing intensity on plant community fungal diseases in an alpine grassland.

Fungal pathogens are a vital component of microbial communities and can substantially reduce plant productivity. In grasslands, pathogens and their host plants frequently coexist with large grazing herbivores. However, it remains unclear whether and how grazing alters pathogen transmission and prevalence, particularly when integrating soil and foliar pathogens. Here, we conducted an 8-year field experiment in alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau to examine how soil pathogens and foliar diseases respond to grazing intensity, and to assess the relationship between them. Our results s

Fine-scale recovery of mite communities following local extinctions on grasslands.

Agricultural management can substantially reduce soil biodiversity, potentially impairing key ecosystem processes. Understanding the capacity of soil biota to recover after severe disturbance is therefore essential for evaluating soil resilience. Soil-dwelling mite communities are known to respond sensitively to environmental change. We investigated the recovery of soil mite communities in a newly planted grassland using half-open field mesocosms. Grass mixtures were cultivated over three consecutive eight-month periods in chernozem and sandy soils. Within each system, mite assemblages in mini

The microbe-mediated mechanisms affecting topsoil carbon stock in Tibetan grasslands.

Warming has been shown to cause soil carbon (C) loss in northern grasslands owing to accelerated microbial decomposition that offsets increased grass productivity. Yet, a multi-decadal survey indicated that the surface soil C stock in Tibetan alpine grasslands remained relatively stable. To investigate this inconsistency, we analyzed the feedback responses of soil microbial communities to simulated warming by soil transplant in Tibetan grasslands. Whereas microbial functional diversity decreased in response to warming, microbial community structure did not correlate with changes in temperature

Aridity Threshold Alters Trait-mediated Regulation of Grassland Productivity at a Global Scale.

Understanding how grassland productivity responds to increasing aridity is critical under climate change, yet whether consistent thresholds exist and how underlying mechanisms shift remain unclear. Here, we conducted a global meta-analysis to examine the response of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to the aridity index (AI) and the role of plant functional traits. ANPP showed a significant nonlinear relationship with AI, with a threshold at AI ≈ 0.51. Below this threshold, ANPP increased strongly with AI, whereas this relationship weakened above it. This threshold coincided with a s

Nitrogen inputs and mowing do not alter N:P stoichiometry in grassland insect herbivores.

Nitrogen (N) inputs result in stoichiometric imbalances between N and phosphorus (P) in soils and plants. There are increasing concerns about the transmission of such stoichiometric imbalances to higher trophic levels through the bottom-up effect. However, most studies focus on the species-level responses, leaving community-level responses largely unexplored. We examined the responses of N:P stoichiometry in plant community, dominant insect groups (Arcypteridae, Cicadellidae, and Lygaeidae), and insect community in both mown and unmown grasslands at the end of 8-year N addition. Nitrogen addit

Light mowing supports fine-root production in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil.

The dynamic changes and differential responses of roots - an important research hotspot in belowground ecology-are one of the most fascinating yet elusive focuses in terrestrial ecology. We conducted a two-year field experiment in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil of northern China to generalize the effects of mowing intensity on root production, mortality, standing crop, turnover, and lifespan. Four mowing intensities were established, including no mowing, light mowing, moderate mowing, and heavy mowing. Fine root dynamics were monitored in situ using the root-window method at 15-day
