Gravitational Autoreposition for Staged Closure of Omphaloceles.

INTRODUCTION: Management strategies for large omphaloceles remain controversial. In this study, we discuss the use of GRAVITAS (gravitational autoreposition sutures), the method used at our institution when successful primary closure is deemed questionable. Patient's primary clinical course and long-term outcomes were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients with omphaloceles treated between 1997 and 2018. Decision for GRAVITAS was made when the defect was estimated too large for primary closure. Traction sutures were placed i

Gravitational wave astronomy: needle in a haystack.

A worldwide array of highly sensitive ground-based interferometers stands poised to usher in a new era in astronomy with the first direct detection of gravitational waves. The data from these instruments will provide a unique perspective on extreme astrophysical objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, and will allow us to test Einstein's theory of gravity in the strong field, dynamical regime. To fully realize these goals, we need to solve some challenging problems in signal processing and inference, such as finding rare and weak signals that are buried in non-stationary and non-Gaussi

Gravitational-Wave Signatures of Nonviolent Nonlocality.

Measurement of gravitational waves can provide precision tests of the nature of black holes and compact objects. In this Letter, we test Giddings' nonviolent nonlocality proposal, which posits that quantum information is transferred via a nonlocal interaction that generates metric perturbations around black holes. In contrast to firewalls, these quantum fluctuations would be spread out over a larger distance range-up to a Schwarzschild radius away. In this Letter, we model the modification to the gravitational waveform from nonviolent nonlocality. We modify the nonspinning EOBNRv2 effective on

Resilience of otolithic reflex to gravitational changes.

Otoliths within the vestibular system detect the magnitude and orientation of gravity and provide a reference frame for spatial orientation. Although vestibular processing has been studied in altered gravity, little is known about the initial minutes of exposure, when space motion sickness emerges. This study investigated whether otolithic detection is modified in different gravities or by sensory conflicts. Otolithic function was assessed using vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) recorded from three muscles, reflecting utricular and saccular activity. VEMPs were measured during para

Ocular Translation Due to Gravitational Acceleration.

PURPOSE: We asked if human globe position in the orbit is influenced by gravitational head orientation. METHODS: In 11 adult volunteers, surface coil magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 2 mm thick axial and quasi-coronal planes with a centered visual target was performed in supine position that aligned the cranial midline along the gravity vector, and was repeated in right and left decubitus positions that oriented gravity orthogonally. From coronal MRI, we computed globe centroid positions relative to the whole head. RESULTS: In decubitus posture relative to supine, the upper eye shifted 0.

[Low-gravitational changes in the bone system].

This review surveys reported data and observations made by the present authors concerning the effect of real and simulated hypogravity on bones of man and various animals. Bone biomechanics and mechanisms of osteodystrophic changes in hypogravity are discussed. Based on published data about bone metabolism regulation, the concept of bone formation and degradation in normal gravity and hypogravity is advanced. The conclusion is made that hypogravity-induced changes obey regulation at different levels, with local mechanisms being predominant. It is emphasized that a detailed investigation of eve

[Nervous apparatus of the 8th pair of cranial nerves after exposure to gravitation loading].

Neural apparatus of epineurium, perineurium and endoneurium of the cat vestibulocochlear nerve was studied by methods of Rasskazova, Bielshowsky--Gross, Kampos, Kuprianov, Gomori, Falck in modification of Chilingarian, Koelle--Gomori, Falck--Hillarp--Govyrin. A single gravitation loading effect was stated to produce reactive, and sometimes destructive changes in the sensitive nervous structures of the intraorganic apparatus of the neural sheaths. The greatest and earliest changes (the first day) were noted in the neural apparatus of epineurium of the vestibulocochlear nerve, the least and late

Periodic Gravitational Lensing with Oscillating Boson Stars.

We show that oscillating (real-scalar) boson stars generically host an oscillating radial caustic. Sources near this caustic cross it every half period, thereby producing periodic caustic-crossing lensing. The resulting observables are phase locked to the lens oscillation: image-pair creation or annihilation, changing image morphology, achromatic photometric spikes, and astrometric motion. This signal provides a distinctive target for time-domain astronomy, and its detection would reveal an intrinsically time-dependent compact dark-sector object. Event-number estimates indicate a measurable di

Stopped-light-enhanced gravitational force sensing.

As the weakest fundamental force, gravity yields only small accelerations from millimetre-scale masses, making them difficult to detect. Detecting the gravitational fields of microscopic objects is important for microscale sensing, imaging or studies of the impact of the quantum state of an object on gravity. Cavendish-type torsion balances can sensitively measure gravity from small source masses, but their integration with micro- and nanophotonic readout remains challenging. Here we show gravitational-force sensing of a millimetre-sized mass using a torsion pendulum integrated with optical mi

Gravitational Pair Production and Black Hole Evaporation.

We present a new avenue to black hole evaporation using a heat-kernel approach analogous as for the Schwinger effect. Applying this method to an uncharged massless scalar field in a Schwarzschild spacetime, we show that spacetime curvature takes a similar role as the electric field strength in the Schwinger effect. We interpret our results as local pair production in a gravitational field and derive a radial production profile. The resulting emission peaks near the unstable photon orbit. Comparing the particle number and energy flux to the Hawking case, we find both effects to be of similar or

Internal models and prediction of visual gravitational motion.

Baurès et al. [Baurès, R., Benguigui, N., Amorim, M.-A., & Siegler, I. A. (2007). Intercepting free falling objects: Better use Occam's razor than internalize Newton's law. Vision Research, 47, 2982-2991] rejected the hypothesis that free-falling objects are intercepted using a predictive model of gravity. They argued instead for "a continuous guide for action timing" based on visual information updated till target capture. Here we show that their arguments are flawed, because they fail to consider the impact of sensori-motor delays on interception behaviour and the need for neural compensatio

Development as adaptation: a paradigm for gravitational and space biology.

Adaptation is a central precept of biology; it provides a framework for identifying functional significance. We equate mammalian development with adaptation, by viewing the developmental sequence as a series of adaptations to a stereotyped sequence of habitats. In this way development is adaptation. The Norway rat is used as a mammalian model, and the sequence of habitats that is used to define its adaptive-developmental sequence is (a) the uterus, (b) the mother's body, (c) the huddle, and (d) the coterie of pups as they gain independence. Then, within this framework and in relation to each o

Gravitational shunts in longstanding overt ventriculomegaly in adults.

OBJECTIVE: A new entity of chronic hydrocephalus was introduced recently in the international literature: longstanding overt ventriculomegaly in adults. Previous experience with this disorder has demonstrated that shunt therapy for such patients involves a considerable risk of overdrainage. In the present study, we aimed to clarify whether this risk could be avoided by use of gravitational shunts. METHODS: A total of 26 adults (age range, 17-75 yr) with macrocephaly and progressive hydrocephalus symptoms underwent implantation of either an adjustable Codman Hakim gravity-assisted shunt (Codma

Gravitational acceleration as a cue for absolute size and distance?

When an object's motion is influenced by gravity, as in the rise and fall of a thrown ball, the vertical component of acceleration is roughly constant at 9.8 m/sec2. In principle, an observer could use this information to estimate the absolute size and distance of the object (Saxberg, 1987a; Watson, Banks, von Hofsten, & Royden, 1992). In five experiments, we examined people's ability to utilize the size and distance information provided by gravitational acceleration. Observers viewed computer simulations of an object rising and falling on a trajectory aligned with the gravitational vector. Th

Biological and cognitive determination of the gravitational reference frame.

It is argued that space sickness is not so much a physiological problem, but a psychological one, having its roots in the perception of the environment, and its associated cognitive processing. This cognitive processing is argued to be that of field dependence and field independence, for which exist psychobiological and cognitive assessment tests. Since there is an obvious economic advantage in the use of cognite testing, it is recommended that this could be used as an initial screening when selecting for astronauts.

A model for vestibular function in altered gravitational states.

During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g. The proper function of the otolith sy

Nonlinear Gravitational Memory in the Post-Minkowskian Expansion.

We present the first computation of the nonlinear gravitational memory waveform for the scattering of two compact objects in general relativity at leading order in the post-Minkowskian expansion. We use the scattering-amplitude-based representation of the gravitational waveform, which naturally expresses the nonlinear memory as the contribution of soft gravitons emitted by the gravitational waves themselves. We perform the calculation by applying a multipolar decomposition to the waveform and using the reverse unitarity method to obtain explicit exact-in-velocity predictions. We validate the r
