UNLABELLED: The white sucker Catostomus commersonii is a freshwater teleost often utilized as a resident sentinel. Here, we sequenced the full genome of a hepatitis B-like virus that infects white suckers from the Great Lakes Region of the United States. Dideoxy sequencing confirmed that the white sucker hepatitis B virus (WSHBV) has a circular genome (3,542 bp) with the prototypical codon organization of hepadnaviruses. Electron microscopy demonstrated that complete virions of approximately 40 nm were present in the plasma of infected fish. Compared to avi- and orthohepadnaviruses, sequence c

Genomic surveillance has become an indispensable tool for the identification of pathogens and tracking of transmission chains. Building upon the global sequencing and surveillance infrastructure developed and expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, these capacities are now being adapted to track other pathogens in low- and middle-income countries which remain disproportionately affected by infectious diseases. This is evident in the recent and unprecedented spread of mpox virus in regions experiencing multiple concurrent infectious disease outbreaks, highlighting the need for broad, adaptable d

PURPOSE: This study examined the barriers Hispanic community members face in accessing information about employment rights under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Although the ADA provides legal workplace protections, Hispanic individuals with disabilities often remain under-informed and underserved, revealing a critical gap in outreach, education, and equitable access to rights-based information. This research centers on community perspectives on how ADA-related employment information is accessed and understood.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two semi-structured interviews

Mute swans (Cygnus olor) are an invasive species in the United States. The dramatic increase in their populations in localized areas has led to various problems, among them competition with native species and attacks on humans by aggressive swans. However, very little is known about the ability of these swans to transmit pathogens to humans, domestic birds, or wildlife or participate in enzootic maintenance. To learn more about select pathogens that mute swans may harbor, a survey was conducted from April of 2011 to August of 2012 in the Great Lakes region and localized areas of the Atlantic c

In Africa, the first Plasmodium falciparum Kelch13 (K13) artemisinin partial resistance mutation 561H was first detected and validated in Rwanda. Surveillance to better define the extent of the emergence in Rwanda and neighboring countries as other mutations arise in East Africa is critical. We employ a novel scheme of liquid blood drop preservation combined with pooled sequencing to provide a cost-effective rapid assessment of resistance mutation frequencies at multiple collection sites across Rwanda and neighboring countries. Malaria-positive samples (n=5,465) were collected from 39 health f

Hosmer A. Johnson, one of the early laryngologists in the Midwest, graduated in 1852 from Rush Medical College, and was the first intern in Chicago. With four other faculty members he left Rush in 1859 to establish what subsequently became the Northwestern University Medical School. He taught many subjects and was extremely active in local and national societies. An interest in diseases of the chest led him into laryngology and he became a charter member of the American Laryngological Association, where he reported on congenital tumors of the larynx, laryngeal paralysis, and cancer of the lary

Coastal freshwater wetlands are critical ecosystems for both local and global carbon cycles, sequestering substantial carbon while also emitting methane (CH4) due to anoxic conditions. Estuarine freshwater wetlands face unique challenges from fluctuating water levels, which influence water quality, vegetation, and carbon cycling. However, the response of CH4 fluxes and their drivers to altered hydrology and vegetation remains unclear, hindering mechanistic modeling. To address these knowledge gaps, we studied an estuarine freshwater wetland in the Great Lakes region, where rising water levels

Cladophora mats that accumulate and decompose along shorelines of the Great Lakes create potential threats to the health of humans and wildlife. The decaying algae create a low oxygen and redox potential environment favoring growth and persistence of anaerobic microbial populations, including Clostridium botulinum, the causal agent of botulism in humans, birds, and other wildlife. In addition to the diverse population of microbes, a dynamic chemical environment is generated, which involves production of numerous organic and inorganic substances, many of which are believed to be toxic to the sa

Biological markers (biomarkers) sensitive to genotoxic and mutagenic contamination in fishes are widely used to identify exposure effects in aquatic environments. The micronucleus assay was incorporated into a suite of indicators to assess exposure to genotoxic and mutagenic contamination at five Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs), as well as one non-AOC (reference) site. The assay allowed enumeration of micronuclei as well as other nuclear abnormalities for both site and species comparisons. Erythrocyte abnormality data was also compared to skin and liver tumor prevalence and hepatic transcr

Mercury (Hg) contamination is widespread in the Laurentian Great Lakes region and is a serious environmental concern. In anaerobic environments such as lake sediments, mercury is transformed into methylmercury (MeHg) and can biomagnify up the food chain to toxic concentrations. The Great Lakes Fish Monitoring Program (GLFMP), administered by the US EPA Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO), aims to monitor temporal trends of mercury in the five Great Lakes using top predator fish as biomonitors. Total Hg (THg) concentrations were measured in Great Lake fish collected between 1999 and 200

To better understand the dynamics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in complex freshwater ecosystems, we performed a systematic meta-analysis of PFAS distributions and spatiotemporal variance in biota of the Laurentian Great Lakes watersheds. We reviewed 50 publications that contained 2489 records (primarily of fish and birds) spanning 42 years of biological sampling. Using this dataset, we built generalized additive models for six compounds-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs)-routinely detected in biological tissues. Estimated conce

Elevated population levels of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman) can drastically alter forest ecosystems and negatively impact society through human interactions such as deer vehicle collisions. It is currently difficult to estimate deer populations at multiple scales ranging from stand, county, state, and regional levels. This presents a challenge as natural resource managers develop silvicultural prescriptions and forest management practices aimed at successfully regenerating tree species in the face of deer browsing. This study utilized measurements of deer browse impact f

Cholera continues to be a public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically the African Great Lakes region. Cases of cholera and deaths from cholera are increasing yearly. Studies have identified lakes and war/conflict as the risk factors for cholera in the African Great Lakes region. Other studies suggest that surveillance, handwashing, sanitation, oral cholera vaccine, education, and access to care are effective preventive measures against cholera in sub-Saharan Africa. But sub-Saharan Africa is not meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring availability and sustainable

Global climate change is expected to exacerbate existing environmental stressors and increasingly impact biodiversity. While likely widespread, changes in wildlife populations resulting from the interaction of climate change and other environmental stressors remain poorly understood. We investigated climate-mediated lake level fluctuations in coastal wetland ecosystems undergoing shoreline development and species invasions in the Laurentian Great Lakes. We evaluated the potential of multiple stressors to reduce ecological resilience and generate alternative stable states, by examining effects

Dam removal projects are increasingly used restoration approaches to support fish migration and freshwater biodiversity. Unfortunately, improved watershed connectivity can promote the spread of invasive species. The Rouge River (Michigan, USA), a Great Lakes Area of Concern, is a degraded ecosystem undergoing ongoing restoration and improvement. To evaluate tradeoffs between restoration benefits and invasion risk, we examined the spread of invasive round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, over 14 years (2012-2025) following the removal of the Wayne Road Dam in the Rouge River watershed. Using commu

The natural reproduction of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush in Lake Michigan is thought to be compromised by nutritional deficiency associated with inadequate levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) in their eggs. However, mortality driven by thiamine deficiency (commonly referred to as early mortality syndrome [EMS]) is not the only significant cause of low lake trout survival at early life stages. In this study, we sought to better understand the combined effects of variable levels of thiamine and fatty acids in lake trout eggs on prehatch, posthatch, and swim-up-stage mortality. We sampled the eggs

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is a notifiable pathogen of the World Organization of Animal Health. Since SVCV was isolated in Lake Ontario in 2007, concern has grown about its spread in the Great Lakes basin and its potential negative impacts on fish species of importance in stock enhancement programs basinwide. The susceptibility of representative fish species from the families Cyprinidae (Fathead Minnow Pimephales promelas, Golden Shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas, Spotfin Shiner Cyprinella spiloptera, and Creek Chub Semotilus atromaculatus), Centrarchidae (Largemouth Bass Micropterus sal

This paper applies a geospatial network optimization model to explore environmental, economic, and time-of-delivery tradeoffs associated with the application of marine vessels as substitutes for heavy-duty trucks operating in the Great Lakes region. The geospatial model integrates U.S. and Canadian highway, rail, and waterway networks to create an intermodal network and characterizes this network using temporal, economic, and environmental attributes (including emissions of carbon dioxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides).
