Coupling SFE to uterotonic bioassay: an on-line approach to analysing medicinal plants.

Supercritical fluid extraction has been directly coupled on-line to a uterotonic bioassay, using guinea pig uterine smooth muscle in vitro. This technique was developed for the detection of uterotonic compounds present in medicinal plants used during pregnancy to induce or augment labour. The direct passage of CO2 into the muscle chamber led to adiabatic cooling of the physiological fluid and inhibition of muscle contraction. This was alleviated by the construction of a CO2 reduction interface together with the passage of carbogen which aided in the rapid displacement of excess CO2. The on-lin

Fruits and their phytochemicals in mitigating the ill effects of ionizing radiation: review on the existing scientific evidence and way forward.

Although helpful in treating cancer, exposure to ionizing radiation can sometimes cause severe side effects, negating its benefit. In addition to its use in clinics, a nontoxic radioprotective agent can also be beneficial in occupational settings where humans are occupationally exposed for prolonged periods to low doses of radiation. Scientific studies using laboratory animals have shown that the fruits Aegle marmelos, Capsicum annuum, Citrus aurantium, Citrullus lanatus, Crataegus microphylla, Eugenia jambolana, Emblica officinalis, Garcinia kola, Grewia asiatica, Hippophae rhamnoides, Malus

Neuroprotective effects of dietary plants and phytochemicals against radiation-induced cognitive and behavioral deficits: a comprehensive review of evidence and prospects for future research.

Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is a common occurrence in clinical practice and incidents involving nuclear detonation or nuclear reactor accidents. IR triggers cellular events that result in oxidative stress and damage to macromolecules, rendering it harmful. While the central nervous system (CNS) was once believed to be resistant to radiation, emerging evidence suggests that even small doses of IR can adversely impact the brain. Exposure to an unsafe dose of radiation can cause increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), neuronal apoptosis, reduced neurogenesis, impaired syn

Dual-Locus Metabarcoding Reveals Dry-Season Dietary Differentiation Between Elephants and Impalas in a South African Savanna.

Large herbivores in African savannas experience intense nutritional constraints during the dry season when declining forage quality intensifies competition for limited resources. Sympatric mixed feeders are therefore expected to differ in their use of forage resources, yet specific plant taxa underlying these dietary differences remain poorly resolved. Here, we used dual-locus DNA metabarcoding (rbcL and trnL) to characterise and compare dry-season diets of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) and impalas (Aepyceros melampus) in a semi-arid savanna ecosystem in South Africa. Despite substant

Hyaluronidase, phospholipase A2 and protease inhibitory activity of plants used in traditional treatment of snakebite-induced tissue necrosis in Mali, DR Congo and South Africa.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Snakebite envenomation, every year, causes estimated 5-10,000 mortalities and results in more than 5-15,000 amputations in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Antiserum is not easily accessible in these regions or doctors are simply not available, thus more than 80% of all patients seek traditional practitioners as first-choice. Therefore it is important to investigate whether the plants used in traditional medicine systems contain compounds against the necrosis-inducing enzymes of snake venom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extracts from traditionally used plants from DR Congo,

Investigation of skin permeation, ex vivo inhibition of venom-induced tissue destruction, and wound healing of African plants used against snakebites.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Snakebite envenomation causes 5000-10,000 mortalities and results in more than 5-15,000 amputations in sub-Saharan Africa alone every year. The inaccessibility of antiserum therapy is a vast problem, and only about 2.5% of the actual need for antiserum in Africa is covered. Numerous plants have shown in vitro inhibitory activity against one or more of the hydrolytic enzymes involved in snakebite-induced necrosis. However, a more thorough examination of the plant species in ex vivo and in vitro cell assay models is needed to test their ability to inhibit necrosis

Brine shrimp toxicity and antimalarial activity of some plants traditionally used in treatment of malaria in Msambweni district of Kenya.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Kenya, most people especially in rural areas use traditional medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases including malaria. Malaria is of national concern in Kenya, in view of development of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs especially chloroquine, which had been effective and affordable. There is need for alternative and affordable therapy. Many antimalarial drugs have been derived from medicinal plants and this is evident from the reported antiplasmodial activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study reports on the in vivo antimal
