The "maintainer's" perspective on maintaining regular physical activity: theory development using a constructivist grounded theory approach.

BACKGROUND: The factors leading to physical activity maintenance are not well-understood. This study investigated such factors among individuals who adhere to the WHO physical activity guidelines for five years or longer, exploring perspectives, motives and facilitators of long-term physical activity maintenance. METHODS: A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted to explore the phenomenon through the maintainers themselves (n = 10) via in-depth semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Coded segments (n = 1,127) were sorted into 21 themes and summarized into six broad categories: three

Pathways to community palliative spiritual care volunteering: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: As the world’s population ages and life expectancy increases, the prevalence of chronic diseases and cancer has risen, increasing the demand for community palliative care. While community palliative care relies on teamwork, volunteers play a crucial role in connecting medical teams with patients’ families and the community. However, challenges in recruiting and managing palliative volunteer teams remain largely unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the motivations and process of engaging in community palliative spiritual care as a volunteer. METHODS: This stud

The Psychological Effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Grounded Theory Study.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological condition. Research has increased our understanding of the etiology, prognosis, and effective medical treatment of the illness. There is a lack of understanding regarding the psychological effects and what could help patients. This study aimed to begin to address this using constructivist grounded theory. Eleven interviews were conducted with participants who had received a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome in the preceding 4 years. The model that emerged identified two key processes: "Loss, determination, and adjustment" and "The unknown." "Re

Understanding the Concept of Fluency in Stuttering: A Grounded-Theory Study.

PURPOSE: Fluency is a widely used concept in stuttering research and clinical practice and has traditionally been approached through observable speech characteristics. Although theoretical and clinical perspectives have acknowledged internal aspects of fluency, the perspectives of people who stutter themselves remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to examine how adults who stutter define fluency and experience it in their daily lives. METHOD: Ten adults who stutter participated in individual interviews guided by an evolved grounded theory approach. Interviews began with the

Autistic People's Perspectives on Parental Diagnosis Disclosure: A Grounded Theory Study.

Being diagnosed with autism has multiple implications for a person's life and self-identity. Although learning about autism at a younger age is correlated with quality of life, only a few studies have addressed parental disclosure thereof. This study conceptualizes autistic adults' perspectives on parental disclosure. The methods combine grounded theory with the emancipatory research paradigm, drawing on autistic people's personal knowledge. Eighty-five autistic adults participated in six focus groups (51 male, 33 female, 3 non-binary; Mage = 25); and 41 autistic adults were interviewed (22 ma

Reading the family: A constructivist grounded theory on organ donation conversations.

Approaching families to discuss deceased organ donation authorisation is considered one of the central stages of the organ donation process. In many countries, specialist nurses lead the organ donation process, approach and support families. However, how these encounters occur is not yet fully understood. A constructivist grounded theory methodology was used to conceptualise the process of approaching families from the perspectives of healthcare professionals and families. Data collected included six months of observations across two large hospitals in Chile, documents, interviews and focus gr

Electronic health record competency in graduate nurses: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The use of electronic health records is ubiquitous in healthcare settings, yet newly graduated nurses struggle with developing electronic health record competency prior to entry into nursing practice. Insufficient electronic health record knowledge, skills, and attitudes among newly graduated nurses are contributing to patient harm, clinical burn-out, and unsafe practices. In this study, we interviewed electronic health record educators to identify how newly graduated nurses develop electronic health record competency characteristics and to learn about their educational approaches

Adaptation of patients diagnosed with human papillomavirus: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus is the most common cause of sexually transmitted diseases. Various studies report that positive human papillomavirus diagnosis results in psychosexual issues for the infected and reduces their quality of life. However, the adaptation of the infected has not been addressed yet. The present study aims to identify the process by which individuals infected with human papillomavirus adapt to their disease. METHOD: This is a qualitative work of research with a grounded theory design. The setting of the study was the skin clinic of Shahid Faghihi Hospital in Shiraz.

The Journey towards resilience following a traumatic birth: A grounded theory.

UNLABELLED: Statistics have shown that up to 30% of women experience birth as traumatising. However, most women do not go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and instead appear to be resilient. Research is still sparse in the field of traumatic birth and resilience, and it is not known how women develop resilience after a traumatic birth. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand the process of fostering resilience after a traumatic birth. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight female participants aged 30 to 50 years who experienced a traumati

A grounded theory exploration of deliberate self-harm in incarcerated women.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to explicate a definition of deliberate self-harm (DSH) and present a model that illustrates the DSH process as experienced by incarcerated women. Grounded theory was used to guide the collection and analysis of data. A circular process of DSH emerged. For the incarcerated women in this study anxiety caused a visceral build-up of tension that reached a critical level necessitating a need to act in some way to gain relief. DSH supplied the mechanism by which overwhelming tension was released. The temporary relief, however, was soon supplanted by the neg

Home health care for mechanical ventilation-dependent patients: A grounded theory study.

The number of people requiring home mechanical ventilation is increasing. Both family and patients experience a quite different situation. There is a significant knowledge gap about the caring process, families and health care team responsibilities, challenges they face, and how they manage. This study aimed to discover the process of home health care (HHC) to mechanical ventilation-dependent patients. The Straus and Corbin version of the grounded theory method was used. The preliminary study was conducted in 2015, and then for updating the theory, a complementary study was done in 2019. Sampl

Deliberate acquisition of competence in physiological breech birth: A grounded theory study.

PROBLEM: Research suggests that the skill and experience of the attendant significantly affect the outcomes of vaginal breech births, yet practitioner experience levels are minimal within many contemporary maternity care systems. BACKGROUND: Due to minimal experience and cultural resistance, few practitioners offer vaginal breech birth, and many practice guidelines and training programmes recommend delivery techniques requiring supine maternal position. Fewer practitioners have skills to support physiological breech birth, involving active maternal movement and choice of birthing position, in

The Docent Method: A Grounded Theory Approach for Researching Place and Health.

To understand health, research needs to move outside of controlled research settings into the environments where health activities occur-homes, streets, and neighborhoods. I offer the docent method as a qualitative place-based approach for exploring health in a participant-driven, structured, and flexible way. The docent method is a participant-led, audiotaped, and photographed walking interview through broad "sites of interest" (SOIs). It is rooted in grounded theory and influenced by community-based participatory research and walking interviews. The three stages of the docent method involve:
