Natural attenuation of perchlorate in denitrified groundwater.

Monitoring of a well-defined septic system groundwater plume and groundwater discharging to two urban streams located in southern Ontario, Canada, provided evidence of natural attenuation of background low level (ng/L) perchlorate (ClO4⁻) under denitrifying conditions in the field. The septic system site at Long Point contains ClO4⁻ from a mix of waste water, atmospheric deposition, and periodic use of fireworks, while the nitrate plume indicates active denitrification. Plume nitrate (NO3⁻ -N) concentrations of up to 103 mg/L declined with depth and downgradient of the tile bed due to denitrif

Investigating the in situ degradation of atrazine in groundwater.

This study focused on whether or not atrazine could be degraded by indigenous groundwater bacteria as part of an in situ remediation approach. Groundwater was taken from an unconfined middle upper chalk site where concentrations of atrazine and nitrate were typically in the ranges 0.02-0.2 microg litre-1 and 11.6-25.1 mg NO3-N litre-1 respectively. Sacrificial batch studies were performed using this groundwater spiked with atrazine at a concentration of 10 microg litre-1 in conjunction with a minimal mineral salts liquid (Glu-MMSL) medium which contained glucose as the sole carbon source. Trea

Groundwater microbial communities across the terrestrial subsurface.

The terrestrial subsurface hosts one of Earth's largest biomes, with groundwater systems representing major habitats for microbial life. In these environments, microbes persist under energy scarcity caused by the absence of photosynthesis, physical isolation and slow geochemical turnover, but the ecological principles underpinning their survival are poorly understood. Here we propose a framework of 'microbial frugality' to describe how evolutionary and physiological traits enable life to persist near the energetic minimum in groundwater. Key traits include low replication rates, genome streaml

Dissolved Barium Causes Toxicity to Groundwater Cyclopoida.

Barium (Ba) dissolution and mobilization in groundwater are predominantly controlled by sulfate because of the low solubility of barium sulfate (BaSO4) minerals. Naturally present at low concentrations in groundwater, elevated concentrations of Ba can occur as a result of anthropogenic activities, including use of barite in drill operations, and geogenic sources such as leaching from geological formations. No toxicity data exist for Ba with groundwater organisms (stygofauna) to assess the risk of elevated Ba concentrations. The present study measured Ba toxicity to two stygobiont Cyclopoida sp

Pan India fluoride hazard assessment in groundwater.

Fluoride (F¯) contamination in groundwater in India has gained global attention due to human health hazards. India's hydrogeological heterogeneity, spatio-temporal variability of F¯, and health hazards due to geogenic and geo-environmental control pose unique challenges. Addressing these with only a single region-specific study is not possible. Therefore, this study provides an in-depth, holistic analysis of pan India F¯ contamination, controlling factors, and health hazards using a coupled advanced geostatistical and geospatial approach. Alarming F¯ contaminations are identified in Rajasthan,

Salinity and temperature increase impact groundwater crustaceans.

Anthropogenic impacts in groundwater ecosystems remain poorly known. Climate change is omnipresent, while groundwater salinization poses serious long-term environmental problems in arid and semi-arid regions, and is exacerbated by global warming. Both are present threats to the conservation of groundwater ecosystems, which harbour highly specialized species, with peculiar traits and limited geographic distributions. We tested the temperature and salinity tolerance of groundwater-adapted invertebrates to understand the effect of global warming and salinization in groundwater ecosystems. We used

Groundwater seeps facilitate exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a saprophytic bacterium which is the causative agent of melioidosis, a common cause of fatal bacterial pneumonia and sepsis in the tropics. The incidence of melioidosis is clustered spatially and temporally and is heavily linked to rainfall and extreme weather events. Clinical case clustering has recently been reported in Townsville, Australia, and has implicated Castle Hill, a granite monolith in the city center, as a potential reservoir of infection. Topsoil and water from seasonal groundwater seeps were collected around the base of Castle Hill and analyzed by qu

Ecological water replenishment effects on groundwater recovery in the largest shallow groundwater depression cone of the North China Plain.

The North China Plain is among the world’s most severely groundwater-overexploited regions. Since 2018, large-scale ecological water replenishment (EWR) has been applied, yet its long-term impacts on groundwater dynamics and efficient EWR strategies remain poorly understood, particularly in the Shijiazhuang Plain, which hosts the largest shallow groundwater depression cone in the region. In this study, the coupled surface–groundwater model MODCYCLE was applied to investigate these issues in the Shijiazhuang Plain. Results reveal that large-scale EWR has effectively reversed groundwater depleti

Bioremediation of complex chlorinated-solvent impacted groundwater.

Enhanced in situ bioremediation is a widely adopted and sustainable means of remediating chlorinated contaminant impacted groundwater utilizing organohalide respiring bacteria. These bacteria utilize chlorinated compounds as terminal electron acceptors to harvest energy, producing partially or fully dechlorinated end products. A barrier to successful remediation utilizing organohalide respiring bacteria is the impact of environmental factors which may be toxic or otherwise inhibitory towards these organisms or their respiration pathways, particularly in sites with complex contaminant profiles

[Chlorinate solvents natural biodegradation in shallow groundwater].

Chlorinated solvents contaminations are most popular in shallow groundwater. A serious local groundwater contamination of chlorinated solvents is founded in a north city of China during the organic pollution investigation. On the basis of the available data and the determining methods of chlorinated solvents biodegradation in groundwater under natural conditions, research on chlorinated solvents biodegrading potential is carried out. The results show that the ground water environment parameters, Eh and pH of the groundwater, indirect sign of biodegradation, i.e. NO3- changing, and concentratio

Fe-OM-I Redox Coupling during Groundwater Irrigation: A Hidden Pathway for Groundwater Iodine Redistribution and Organo-Iodine Formation.

Chronic exposure to geogenic iodine-enriched groundwater increases thyroid disorder risks for millions of people worldwide. However, the under-recognized pathway of irrigation-induced iodine transport from groundwater to topsoil and its redistribution mechanisms in agricultural systems remain critical knowledge gaps. This study investigated geogenic iodine dynamics in the Jianghan Plain agricultural system, where widespread high iodine groundwater (54.5-655 μg/L) drives irrigation practices. Field experiments and hydrogeochemical analyses revealed that 7 days of irrigation increased surface so

Enhanced biostimulation coupled with a dynamic groundwater recirculation system for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater: A field-scale study.

A large gap exists between laboratory findings and successful implementation of bioremediation technologies for the treatment of chromium (Cr)-contaminated sites. This work conducted the enhanced bioremediation of Cr(VI) in situ via the addition of organic carbon (ethanol) coupled with a dynamic groundwater recirculation (DGR)-based system in a field-scale study. The DGR system was applied to successfully (1) remove Cr(VI) from groundwater via enhanced flushing by the recirculation system and (2) deliver the biostimulant to the heterogeneous subsurface environment, including a sand/cobble aqui

Groundwater releases CO2 to diverse global coastal ecosystems.

Coastal ecosystems play a major role in marine carbon budgets, but substantial uncertainties remain in the sources and fluxes of coastal carbon dioxide (CO2). Here, we assess when, where, and how submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) releases CO2 to shallow coastal ecosystems. Time-series observations of dissolved CO2 and radon (222Rn, a natural groundwater tracer) across 40 coastal systems from 14 countries revealed large SGD-derived CO2 fluxes. The mean groundwater partial pressure of CO2 was 35 times higher than surface seawater. The mean SGD-derived CO2 flux was 148 ± 226 millimoles per sq

Low cost materials for fluoride removal from groundwater.

In several parts of the world, high fluoride concentrations in groundwater have been reported.Fluoride concentrations above the World Health Organization's (WHO) threshold level of 1.5 mg/L in drinkable water pose a health concern for communities and the environment. The distribution of fluoride is mainly related to the geological environment: rocks that contain fluorine, for example basalt, shale, and granite, release their respective minerals containing fluoride to the groundwater by dissolution. Excessive fluoride intake leads to dental and skeletal fluorosis, fragile bones, cancer, inferti

Vivianite precipitation for iron recovery from anaerobic groundwater.

Iron in anaerobic groundwater is commonly removed by oxidation followed by sand filtration. This produces large volumes of iron(III)(hydr)oxide sludge with little value. Our research investigates the novel concept of anaerobic iron(II) recovery from groundwater as the valuable mineral vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2 • 8 H2O) by the addition of phosphate to the water. We found that vivianite precipitated both in synthetic and natural groundwater when the saturation index (SI) was higher than 4. The SI can be increased by elevating the pH, which allows for iron removal at lower concentrations. Anaerobic ir

Microbial community structure and trichloroethylene degradation in groundwater.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a prevalent contaminant of groundwater that can be cometabolically degraded by indigenous microbes. Groundwater contaminated with TCE from a US Department of Energy site in Ohio was used to characterize the site-specific impact of phenol on the indigenous bacterial community for use as a possible remedial strategy. Incubations of 14C-TCE-spiked groundwater amended with phenol showed increased TCE mineralization compared with unamended groundwater. Community structure was determined using DNA directly extracted from groundwater samples. This DNA was then analyzed by a

Hydrogeophysical Assessment of Groundwater Potential in the Deccan Basalt.

Groundwater occurrence in the Deccan basalt is highly uncertain. Non-invasive hydro-geophysical techniques, when integrated with a priori geological information, can aid in delineating saturated zones. This study uses electrical resistivity anisotropy with direct current (DC) resistivity and time-domain induced polarization (IP) for delineating groundwater prospects. We utilized the geophysical responses of DC resistivity, induced polarization, anisotropy and available borehole litholog data to locate the potential aquifers. Anisotropic inversion of DC resistivity data enables the identificati

Detection, movement and persistence of invertebrate eDNA in groundwater.

Sampling groundwater biodiversity is difficult because of limited access and issues with species identification. Environmental DNA (eDNA) provides a viable alternative to traditional sampling approaches, however limited knowledge of the abundance and fate of DNA in groundwater hinders the interpretation of data from these environments. Groundwater environments are dark and have lower oxygen concentrations and microbial activity than surface waters. Consequently, assumptions about DNA fate in surface ecosystems may not apply to groundwaters. Here, we test the longevity and transport of eDNA in

Groundwater pesticide levels and the association with Parkinson disease.

It is unclear whether exposure to environmentally relevant levels of pesticides in groundwater is associated with an increased risk of Parkinson disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between PD and pesticide levels in groundwater. This cross-sectional study included 332 971 Medicare beneficiaries, including 4207 prevalent cases of PD from the 2007 Colorado Medicare Beneficiary Database. Residential pesticide levels were estimated from a spatial model based on 286 well water samples with atrazine, simazine, alachlor, and metolachlor measurements. A logistic reg

Detection and identification of Legionella species from groundwaters.

Legionellae are opportunistic bacterial pathogens causing Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever and are ubiquitous in surface waters and in infrastructure to contain or distribute water, including pipes, cooling towers, and whirlpool spas. Infection in community-acquired and nosocomial outbreaks is by exposure to contaminated aerosols. Little is known about the presence of legionellae in groundwater. This study used samples from various locations in the United States and Canada to determine if legionellae could be isolated from water and biofilms derived from groundwaters not known to be und
