Impact of a brief fentanyl educational intervention on demand for cocaine mixed with fentanyl.

BACKGROUND: People who use cocaine are at increased risk of overdose related to fentanyl in the cocaine supply, yet few interventions address fentanyl risks among this population. Demand tasks use hypothetical decisions about drug purchases to quantify likely real-world behavior. Our cocaine demand task, the Adulterated Cocaine Purchasing Task, contrasts planned purchases of cocaine when there is 0 % probability (no chance) the cocaine is mixed with fentanyl vs. 10 % probability (in 10 chance) the cocaine is mixed with fentanyl. METHODS: Using a between-subjects design, participants who repor

Increased Urge to Gamble Following Near-Miss Outcomes May Drive Purchasing Behaviour in Scratch Card Gambling.

Previous research into scratch card gambling has highlighted the effects of these games on players' arousal and affective states. Specifically, near-miss outcomes in scratch cards (uncovering 2 of 3 needed jackpot symbols) have been associated with high levels of physiological and subjective arousal and negative emotional evaluations, including increased frustration. We sought to extend this research by examining whether near-misses prompted increases in gambling urge, and the subsequent purchasing of additional scratch cards. Participants played two scratch cards with varying outcomes with ha

Race, homelessness, and other environmental factors associated with the food-purchasing behavior of low-income women.

Observance of the hunger-obesity paradox in urban Minnesota has ignited interest in the quality of low-income households' food purchases. This cross-sectional study investigated low-income, urban Minnesotan women's past-month food purchases and their associations with race, homelessness, and aspects of the food system, including food shelf (ie, food pantry) and food store usage, factors believed to influence food choice and grocery shopping behavior. The survey included demographics, the US Department of Agriculture's 18-item Household Food Security Survey Module, and grocery shopping question

Factors Influencing Water and Sweet Beverage Purchasing Decisions and Behaviours Among Low-Income Households in Four Peri-Urban Communities in Accra: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: In May 2023, Ghana implemented a 20% ad valorem tax on bottled water and sweet beverages (SBs), replacing a 17.5% tax; sachet water remained untaxed. The effect on low-income consumers' purchasing decisions and consumption patterns remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore factors influencing water and SB purchasing behaviours among low-income households in four peri-urban Accra communities. METHODS: This study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Four focus group discussions (n = 36) and a cross-sectional survey (n = 43) were conducted among purpo

Cocaine behavioral economics: from the naturalistic environment to the controlled laboratory setting.

BACKGROUND: We previously observed that behavioral economic factors predict naturalistic heroin seeking behavior that correlates with opioid seeking in the experimental laboratory. The present study sought to replicate and extend these prior findings with regular cocaine users. METHODS: Participants (N=83) completed a semi-structured interview to establish income-generating and cocaine-purchasing/use repertoire during the past month. Questions addressed sources/amounts of income and expenditures; price (money and time) per purchase; and frequency/amounts of cocaine purchased and consumed. Nat

What is the significance of tendon suture purchase?

Repairs have been performed on porcine flexor tendons and subjected to tensile stress measurements to determine the effects and mechanism of core suture purchase (the length of the suture bite). Eighty-four pig trotter flexor profundus tendons were divided and repaired using four lengths of core suture purchase (1.33, 1, 0.66 and 0.33 cm) using a double modified Kessler repair (four strands, two knots) with a peripheral epitendinous suture. Tendon purchase was achieved by either bilateral equal purchase lengths or with one tendon purchase at a fixed depth of 1 cm. A separate group of tendons w

Barriers to pharmacy-based syringe purchase among injection drug users in Tijuana, Mexico: a mixed methods study.

Injection drug users (IDUs) may be denied purchase of sterile syringes even where purchase without a prescription is legal. This study examined barriers to over-the-counter (OTC) syringe purchase among IDUs in Tijuana, Mexico. A quantitative survey and subsequent focus groups were used to quantify barriers to purchase, identify their correlates and provide in-depth exploration of syringe purchase experiences. Of 627 IDUs, 81% purchased a syringe in the past 6 months and 16% were refused or overcharged. Factors independently associated with refusal/overcharging were homelessness, receptive syri

Purchase of both proximal and distal fragments by the calcar screw is critical when using a locking plate in the treatment of proximal humeral fractures : the role of the calcar screw as a medial bridging screw.

AIMS: Inferior positioning of the calcar screw is important in the purchase of medial screws when treating proximal humeral fractures with a locking plate. However, the impact of the overall trajectory of the calcar screw has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the failure of a calcar screw to purchase both proximal and distal fragments would contribute to an increased risk of failure of fixation in these patients. METHODS: Patients who underwent locking plate fixation for a proximal humeral fracture between January 2012 and December 2022 were retrospective

Who are good adult candidates for cartilage conduction hearing aids?

PURPOSE: Cartilage conduction hearing aids (CC-HAs) are novel hearing aids using the third hearing pathway of cartilage conduction. We assessed the efficacy of CC-HAs in adult hearing-loss patients who had various anatomical conditions of their ear canal(s) and determined who are good candidates for CC-HAs. METHODS: Patients (n = 37) were categorised into three groups of participants based on ear canal anatomy: (1) canal stenosis; (2) abnormal canal; (3) normal canal. After a 1-month free trial of normal usage, CC-HA-aided and unaided hearing thresholds (43 fitted ears) were determined using

A meta-analysis to identify factors associated with CPAP machine purchasing in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease and related to several cardiovascular diseases. Treatment with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is effective. However, not all patients with OSA purchase a CPAP machine for personal use. Previous studies showed different predictors of CPAP machine purchasing in patients with OSA. The present study aimed to summarize and identify predictors of CPAP purchasing using meta-analysis. The study was conducted using factors associated with CPAP purchasing in patients with OSA. The types of studies conducted in adult patients with OS

Functional limitations and firearm purchases among low-income U.S. military veterans.

OBJECTIVES: Functional limitations may be associated with firearm ownership among veterans by amplifying perceptions of vulnerability and the need for security, yet their role remains underexplored despite emerging research on health-related factors influencing firearm acquisition in this group. This study examines the relationship between the number of functional limitations and recent firearm purchasing among a sample of low-income US military veterans. METHODS: Data are from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study, which surveyed US veterans in household

Selective Reduction of Socioeconomic Disparities in the Experimental Tobacco Marketplace: Effects of Cigarette and E-cigarette Flavor Restrictions.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking accounts for >30% of the socioeconomic gap in life expectancy. Flavored restrictions claim to promote equity; however, no previous studies have compared the effect of cigarette and e-cigarette flavor restrictions among individuals who smoke with lower and higher socioeconomic status (SES). AIMS AND METHODS: In a between-group within-subject design, individuals with lower (n = 155) and higher (n = 125) SES completed hypothetical purchasing trials in the experimental tobacco marketplace (ETM). Conditions were presented in a 2 × 2 factorial design (cigarette flavo

A study of consumer-generated advertising-An experimental analysis based on purchase experiences, information channels, and privacy costs.

Taking consumer-generated advertising as the research object, hypotheses are proposed on the influential relationship between purchase experiences, information channels and privacy costs and consumer-generated advertising. Then, a between-groups experimental design was adopted. For 402 samples, through questionnaires and interview experiments, ANOVA was used to analyze consumer-generated advertising, exploring the relationship between the behavior of consumer-generated advertising and their influence factors in different consumption scenarios. The results of the study show that: (1)information
