OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of mitochondrial disorders (MDs) is occasionally difficult because patients often present with solitary, or a combination of, symptoms caused by each organ insufficiency, which may be the result of respiratory chain enzyme deficiency. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) has been reported to be elevated in serum of patients with MDs. In this study, we investigated whether GDF-15 is a more useful biomarker for MDs than several conventional biomarkers.
METHODS: We measured the serum levels of GDF-15 and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), as well as other biomark

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), a stress-sensitive cytokine, and a distant member of the transforming growth factor β superfamily, has been shown to exhibit increased levels with aging, and in various age-related pathologies. Although GDF15 levels are elevated in the aqueous humor (AH) of glaucoma (optic nerve atrophy) patients, the possible role of this cytokine in the modulation of intraocular pressure (IOP) or AH outflow is unknown. The current study addresses this question using transgenic mice expressing human GDF15 and GDF15 null mice, and by perfusing enucleated mouse eyes wit

Background/Objectives: Right ventricular pacing is an effective and safe treatment option for patients experiencing symptomatic bradycardia. However, some individuals may develop left ventricular dysfunction as a consequence. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), which is not present in a healthy adult heart, is upregulated in cardiomyocytes in response to various stress stimuli. This study aimed to explore the potential of GDF-15 as a biomarker for chronic right ventricular pacing. Methods: This single-center cross-sectional cohort study analyzed data from 265 consecutive patients (60.4%

OBJECTIVE: We investigated if Growth and Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15) can be used as a biomarker to distinguish patients with mitochondrial myopathy from patients with other myopathies.
METHODS: Serum GDF-15 was measured in 28 patients with mitochondrial disease, 24 with metabolic myopathies, 27 with muscular dystrophy and 21 healthy controls.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that elevated GDF-15 can distinguish patients with mitochondrial myopathy from other myopathies, including metabolic myopathies. This suggests that increases in GDF-15 is specific to respiratory chai

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a divergent member of the transforming growth factor β family discovered in a broad range of cells, as indicated by the diversity of its nomenclature. However, the only tissue that expresses a high amount of GDF15 in the physiologic state is placenta. GDF15 is easily detected in blood, and its concentration varies with age. In fact, increased blood concentration of GDF15 is associated with numerous pathological conditions. However, the biological significance underlying these observations is far from clear. GDF15 could have a positive or negative rol

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), the extreme form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, significantly impacts the quality of life of a subset of pregnant individuals, leading to hospitalization and severe health complications. Despite the prevalence and intensity of HG, therapeutic approaches remain largely palliative, focusing on symptom management without addressing the underlying pathophysiology. This report delineates a case of severe HG in a 31-year-old woman, highlighting the complexity of diagnosis and management, and discusses the potential of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) a

BACKGROUND: Failure to thrive (FTT), defined as weight or height less than the lowest 2.5 percentile for age, is prevalent in up to 66% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Risk stratification methods to identify those who would benefit from early intervention are currently lacking. We aimed to identify a novel growth biomarker to aid clinical decision-making in children with CHD.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of patients 2 months to 10 years of age with any CHD undergoing cardiac surgery. Preoperative weight-for-age Z scores (WAZ) and height-for-age Z scores (HAZ) were

To distinguish hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) from hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (H-LVH) based on a morphological examination is often challenging. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for several cardiovascular diseases. In patients with LVH, GDF-15 promises to be a useful biomarker to distinguish between HCM and H-LVH. We evaluated 93 patients with H-LVH, 28 with HCM, and 28 disease control individuals. Serum GDF-15 concentrations were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Circulating GDF-15 levels were signific

BACKGROUND: Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15), a nonspecific inflammatory marker and member of the TGF-β superfamily, has a well-established role in both inflammation and metabolic modulation, but lacks a comprehensive paediatric literature review. In several adult disease states, including cancer cachexia and pregnancy, circulation and expression of GDF15 has been of clinical and scientific interest, but little published paediatric data exists. As such, we aim to summarize existing paediatric studies.
METHODS: This review follows the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting and aims to sum

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a divergent member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, and its expression increases under various stress conditions, including inflammation, hyperoxia, and senescence. GDF15 expression is increased in neonatal murine bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) models, and GDF15 loss exacerbates oxidative stress and decreases cellular viability in vitro. Our overall hypothesis is that the loss of GDF15 will exacerbate hyperoxic lung injury in the neonatal lung in vivo. We exposed neonatal Gdf15-/- mice and wild-type (WT) controls on a simila
