Evaluation of Natural Antimicrobial Substances Blend as a Replacement for Antibiotic Growth Promoters in Broiler Chickens: Enhancing Growth and Managing Intestinal Bacterial Diseases.

In recent years, commercial use of antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) has restrictions due to drug resistance against intestinal pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Clostridium perfringens. Currently there is no single non-antibiotic treatment approach that is effective against intestinal illnesses in broiler chicken. Hence, present study aimed to analyze efficacy of blend of natural antimicrobial substances (probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, and essential oils blend named as AGPR) as replacers of AGPs (BMD and CTC) for promoting growth and controlling bacterial diseases

Nutritional Factors Affecting Growth and Production of Antimicrobial Substances by Streptococcus lactis subsp. diacetylactis S1-67/C.

The present study pertains to the effect of nutritional factors on the growth and production of antimicrobial substances (AS) by Streptococcus lactis subsp. diacetylactis S1-67/C. Among nine media tested, yeast extract dextrose broth supported good growth and maximum production of AS. Addition of beef extract and yeast extract at 1.0 and 0.6% levels, respectively, increased growth as well as production of AS. Of ten carbohydrates examined, maximum production of AS was achieved with 1% glucose followed by fructose, 4% molasses, lactose, sucrose, galactose, mannitol, maltose and 2% molasses. Xyl

Substance P affects growth factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa-infected mouse cornea.

PURPOSE: This study analyzed the influence of substance P (SP) on growth factors related to wound healing in mice in the presence of infectious keratitis. METHODS: Naturally resistant mice were injected intraperitoneally with SP or phosphate-buffered saline and infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and corneal messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of growth factors and apoptosis genes were tested. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay determined the protein levels, whereas immunohistochemistry tested the distribution, macrophage phenotype, and cell quantitation. In vitro, macrophages were stimulated with l

Epidermal growth factor-like, corneal wound healing substance in mouse tears.

We have identified the presence of a putative corneal wound healing substance in mouse tears, which has a molecular size and immunological properties similar to those of epidermal growth factor (EGF). The substance was capable of binding to EGF receptors in mouse parenchymal cells and this binding was inhibited by anti-EGF serum. The concentration of the EGF-like substance in the tears of male and female mice was estimated to be 79.3 +/- 7.0 (SD) ng/ml and 76.5 +/- 8.1 (SD) ng/ml, respectively, by EGF radioimmunoassay. Removal of the submandibular glands, which produce large amounts of EGF, re

The crosstalk between fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) system and substance use.

Existing literature indicates that communication between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system is disrupted by substance use disorders (SUDs), including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a liver-brain axis hormone governing energy homeostasis, has been shown to modulate alcohol intake/preference and other substances. To further elucidate the relationship between FGF21, alcohol use, and other substance use, we conducted a scoping review to explore the association between FGF21 and SUDs. Increases in FGF21 reduce alcohol consumption while sup

Vicarious trauma and vicarious posttraumatic growth among substance abuse treatment providers.

BACKGROUND: Practitioners working with clients who have experienced trauma are vulnerable to experiencing both vicarious trauma and vicarious posttraumatic growth (PTG). A survey was conducted in which treatment providers who work with adults seeking help for substance abuse were asked about their experience of vicarious trauma and vicarious PTG. It was hypothesized that vicarious trauma and vicarious PTG would be positively associated with each other, that personal history of trauma and years of working with clients who had experienced trauma would be positively associated with vicarious trau

Growth in spending on substance use disorder treatment services for the privately insured population.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 8% of individuals with private health insurance in the United States have substance use disorders (SUDs), but in 2009 only 0.4% of all private insurance spending was on SUDs. The objective of this study was to determine if changes that occurred between 2009 and 2012 - such as more generous SUD benefits, an epidemic of opioid use disorders, and slow recovery from a recession - were associated with greater use of SUD treatment. METHODS: Data were from the 2004-2012 Truven Health Analytics MarketScan(®) Commercial Claims and Encounters Database. This database is represe

Mullerian inhibiting substance inhibits growth of a human ovarian cancer in nude mice.

Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) was investigated for its ability to inhibit growth of a human ovarian cancer in nude mice. Biologically active preparations from newborn calf testes, obtained after sequential ion exchange chromatography, delayed or prevented growth of a human ovarian cancer (HOC-21) when 2 X 10(6) cells were preincubated with them prior to subcutaneous injection of the tumor cells into Balb/C homozygous nude mice. Preincubation of a human colon carcinoma cells (SW-48) with similar preparations of MIS failed to inhibit growth of the tumor cells in nude mice. Human serous ca

Effect of Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Substances from Enterobacter spp. on Rice Growth under Abiotic Stress and Transcriptomic Analysis.

Plant biostimulants have received attention as sustainable alternatives to chemical fertilizers. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), among the compounds secreted by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), are assumed to alleviate abiotic stress. This study aims to investigate the effect of purified EPSs on rice under abiotic stress and analyze their mechanisms. A pot experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of inoculating EPSs purified from PGPRs that increase biofilm production in the presence of sugar on rice growth in heat-stress conditions. Since all EPSs showed impro

Maternal serum levels of perfluoroalkyl substances and organochlorines and indices of fetal growth: a Scandinavian case-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The associations between prenatal exposure to endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDCs) and fetal growth are inconsistent, and few studies have considered small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth as an outcome. Our current study of Scandinavian parous women aimed to address these inconsistencies and gaps in the literature. METHODS: This case-cohort study included 424 mother-child pairs who participated in a prospective, multi-center study of parous women in Norway (Trondheim and Bergen) and Sweden (Uppsala). We used linear and logistic regression with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to an

Antibacterial effect of autologous platelet gel enriched with growth factors and other active substances: an in vitro study.

Platelet-rich plasma is a new inductive therapy which is being increasingly used for the treatment of the complications of bone healing, such as infection and nonunion. The activator for platelet-rich plasma is a mixture of thrombin and calcium chloride which produces a platelet-rich gel. We analysed the antibacterial effect of platelet-rich gel in vitro by using the platelet-rich plasma samples of 20 volunteers. In vitro laboratory susceptibility to platelet-rich gel was determined by the Kirby-Bauer disc-diffusion method. Baseline antimicrobial activity was assessed by measuring the zones of

Implications of posttraumatic growth for the treatment of comorbid substance abuse among survivors of traumatic experiences.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that individuals treated for substance use disorders are not routinely assessed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology despite high rates of comorbidity. One area of research that has been overlooked in theory, research, and practice on the comorbidity of substance use disorders and PTSD is the study of post-traumatic growth. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relevance of post-traumatic growth for the treatment of comorbid substance use disorders among individuals suffering from traumatic stress or PTSD. METHOD: A sample of 256

Trigeminal nasal-specific neurons respond to nerve growth factor with substance-P biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: Nerve growth factor (NGF) has been found to induce substance-P biosynthesis in large-diameter A-fibres vagal airway neurons. However, the effect of NGF on trigeminal neurons innervating the nasal mucosa of the mouse has not been investigated so far. OBJECTIVE: NGF has been implicated in allergic diseases by modulating sensory nerves. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of NGF on neuropeptides expression such as substance-P and glutamate in nasal trigeminal neurons. METHODS: Using neuronal tracing in combination with double labelling immunohistochemistry the expre

The relationship between posttraumatic growth and substance use in homeless women with histories of traumatic experience.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG)--namely, the experience of positive change in oneself or one's life following trauma--is particularly relevant for homeless women because they have greater trauma exposure than the general population, as well as higher rates of substance use. The present study examined PTG and substance use in this population. Fifty homeless women with trauma histories participated. In line with predictions, more current substance use was related to less PTG, more reliance on avoidant coping once approach coping was accounted for, and greater PTSD symptomatology. Levels of growth wer

Effect of neurotensin, substance P and morphine sulfate on the secretion of prolactin and growth hormone in the rat.

Neurotensin (NT), substance P (SP) and morphine sulfate (MS) elevate plasma prolactin and growth hormone levels in both normal or estrogen-progesterone pretreated male rats. By contrast, steroid priming is required for TRF to exhibit PRL-releasing activity. Naloxone, an opiate receptor blocker, reverses the stimulatory effect of MS only. Diphenhydramine, a histamine antagonist, inhibits the response to NT, SP and MS without affecting the response to TRF. These results suggest the involvement of a histaminic step in the action of NT, SP and MS. TRF, NT and SP do not appear to stimulate PRL and

Self-compassion in individuals with substance use disorder: the association with personal growth and well-being.

Individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) who do not have empathy toward oneself, or self-compassion, may limit their opportunities for personal growth and overall well-being. Due to scarce empirical studies examining interactions between self-compassion, personal growth and well-being in persons with SUD, the goal of this research was to examine associations among these concepts. A survey was administered to patients in treatment for SUD using validated scales (Sussex-Oxford Compassion for the Self Scale (SSOCS-S), Personal Growth Initiative (PGI) Scale-II, and World Health Organization (
