We characterize the clinical features of Parkinson's syndrome on Guadeloupe and describe possible environmental causes. Consecutive patients who were referred to the University Hospital at Pointe a Pitre with parkinsonism from September 1996 to May 2002 were included. All cases were examined in a standardized manner by a neurologist with a special interest in movement disorders and independently by 3 external movement disorders specialists, using standard operational clinical diagnostic criteria. During a parasitological investigation in 1982, sparse samples extracted from sand of different frequentation beaches were analysed according to three methods (Baermann, floating, screening). Larva of hookworms of animal origin (Ankylostoma caninum, Ankylostoma tubaeforme, Ankylostoma braziliense and perhaps Ankylostoma ceylanicum) were identified, sometimes in important quantity, just as eggs of Toxocara sp. Clinical cases of cutaneous Larva migrans are frequent in the West Indies, contrary to cases of visceral Larva migrans. Some prophylactic measures are proposed.

In Guadeloupe, the incidence of tuberculosis decreased between 1994 and 2000. The rate of resistance to at least one antibiotic remained constant at 11%, whereas the rate of multiple-drug resistance increased from 0.9 to 2.4% in 2000. Melioidosis has been detected in the Caribbean, and an increasing number of cases has been reported in the past few decades, but only 2 cases were reported in Guadeloupe during the past 20 years. We describe 3 more cases that occurred during 2016-2017 and examine arguments for increasing endemicity.

A serological study on bovines in Guadeloupe (French Carraibes) was conducted during 1973-1974. 456 animals were tested. Their sera were examined by microscopic agglutination technique with 20 antigens. Antibodies against the following serogroups: Ballum, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Bataviae, Australis, Pomona and Sejroë, were found. Ballum is the first serogroup by frequency and titers of antibodies. One young animal was ill and Immunological Test revealed a high titer of antibodies against serogroup Sejroë. This work demonstrates the existence of animal leptospiroses in Guadeloupe.

Sickle cell disease (homozygotes SS) is known as a risk factor for both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, but heterozygotes AS seem to be spared. We carried out a retrospective study to assess the main risk factors and the influence of hemoglobin abnormalities on stroke in Guadeloupe. The percentages of AS, AC, and AA on 295 patients admitted for stroke were compared to the prevalence obtained on 72,000 newborn babies. A presumptive diagnosis of heartwater in the living animal can be based on clinical and epidemiologic observations. In Guadeloupe, heartwater can be confused with haemonchosis in goats or cerebral babesiosis in cattle. Confirmation of the clinical diagnosis by brain biopsy is useful in experimental infections but is hardly applicable in the field. A random survey of 1% of the total population of La Guadeloupe, French West Indies, for toxoplasmosis was carried out. From January 1980 to December 1984, 418 leprosy patients were treated in Guadeloupe with a daily multiple drug regimen using rifampin as an essential drug. 27 leprosy patients (19 adults, 8 children) from Basse Terre (Guadeloupe, FWI) were referred to General Hospital from 1975 to 1989: for diagnostic purpose in half the cases, for starting or modifying treatment regimens, or for complications (ENL). Lepromatous type was predominant (16/27), whereas ENL was the most serious diagnosis and therapeutic problem (7/27). Some epidemiological and psycho-social aspects are discussed.

The case of a young woman from Guadeloupe developing severe megaloblastic anemia is reported. She presented with fever and hemolysis (she had heterozygotic beta-thalassemia) after a six month history of diarrhea. She was shown to have folate deficiency, steatorrhea, vitamin K and B12 malabsorption. She responded well to intravenous folinic acid and tetracyclines. A study of 8,142 live and still-born babies was carried out from July 1979 to February 1983 in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). The total incidence of malformations detected at birth was 1.71% (minor malformations such as polydactyly being very frequent in this population were excluded).
