Shame and guilt as shared vulnerability factors: Shame, but not guilt, prospectively predicts both social anxiety and bulimic symptoms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are highly comorbid. However, little is known about the shared vulnerability factors that prospectively predict both SA and BN symptoms. Two potential factors that have not yet been tested are shame and guilt. In the current study we tested if shame and guilt were shared vulnerability factors for SA and BN symptoms. Women (N=300) completed measures of SA symptoms, BN symptoms, state shame and guilt, and trait negative affect at two time points, two months apart. Utilizing structural equation modeling we tested a cross-sectional and prospec

Gendering Guilt among Dependent Family Members' Caregivers.

This study analyzes guilt among family caregivers of dependent patients, from a gender perspective. A qualitative design was used, conducting in-depth interviews and focus groups. Using purposive sampling, we selected 73 family caregivers and 23 health professionals (family medicine, community nursing, and social work) from the Primary Care District of Seville. The content of the information collected was analyzed in terms of the following categories: a) guilt for abandoning family and friends; b) guilt for the relationship with the dependent person; and c) guilt for placing the relative in a

Stigmata: part I. Shame, guilt, and anger.

The aesthetic surgeon may occasionally be consulted by a patient who wishes to discuss what can be done for the scars of self-inflicted wounds on the forearms. These scars are popularly referred to as "hesitation marks" or "suicide gestures." Unlike patients suffering from factitial ulcers or Münchhausen syndrome, these patients will admit to the physician that the scars are the result of self-inflicted wounds. These scars often consist of multiple, parallel, white lines extending up and down the forearms (usually volar surface), with more on the nondominant side. Although the pattern of these

Assessing Interpersonal Guilt Among Clinical Nurses in China: Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Validation of the Interpersonal Guilt Rating Scale-20.

BACKGROUND: Working in a chronically high emotional exhaustion environment, clinical nurses are prone to psychological burnout and associated professional psychological risks. Interpersonal guilt is recognized as an important potential mechanism affecting nurses' mental health, which may impair their personal well-being and nursing quality. However, there is still a lack of applicable assessment tools for measuring interpersonal guilt among Chinese clinical nurses. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to translate the Interpersonal Guilt Rating Scale-20 (IGRS-20) into Chinese and evaluate its

Guilt and Shame in Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a tremendous psychiatric illness with a variety of severe symptoms. Feelings of shame and guilt are universal social emotions that fundamentally shape the way people interact with each other. Mental illness is therefore often related to pronounced feelings of shame and guilt in a maladaptive form. METHODS: A total of 62 participants (38 women and 24 men) were clinically and psychometrically investigated. RESULTS: The OCD patients (n = 31) showed a maladaptive guilt and shame profile, characterized by increased interpersonal feelings of gui

The Role of Prediabetes in the Metabolic Syndrome: Guilt by Association.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Prediabetes is defined by either impaired glucose tolerance or by one of the more sensitive or more stringent criterion for impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or HbA1c levels that have been promulgated over the years. IFG is one of the risk factors for CVD included in the definition of the MetS. However, there is very little evidence that IFG is independently associated with CVD regardless of which criterion is used for its diagnosis. The CVD risk of the MetS is related to the other risk factors of central

Anger, guilt, and repeated cooperation in social dilemmas.

A consistent finding in behavioral economics is that in social dilemma situations in which individuals must decide between individual and group welfare, cooperation declines over time eventually resulting in noncooperation. Extant theorizing addressing phenomena such as adaptive belief-learning focus solely on cognitive explanations. Based on the appraisal-tendency framework, we propose and show that the development of cooperation has a strong emotional component. Others' actual cooperative behavior compared to their expected cooperative behavior does not only result in adapting beliefs (cogni

Dyspepsia as a somatic expression of guilt: a case report.

A 58-year-old woman developed chronic, severe symptoms of heartburn, epigastric pain, and regurgitation that persisted for 2 years. She underwent a thorough evaluation and no organic cause was identified. Therefore, a diagnosis of dyspepsia was made. Her symptoms were refractory to pharmacological treatment. Upon further probing, the patient reported that the onset of her symptoms coincided with the death of her son of cancer 2 years earlier. She blamed herself for the death of her son and admitted to a need for self-punishment. A brief course of treatment using metaphors and hypnosis resulted

Omnipotent Responsibility Guilt: Theoretical, Clinical, and Empirical Features.

This article aims to give the reader an overview of the concept of omnipotent responsibility guilt, which, according to control-mastery theory (CMT), is the emotional manifestation of a set of pathogenic beliefs that make people believe that if they put their needs in the foreground and do not try to satisfy the needs of their important others, their significant others will suffer. These pathogenic beliefs were generally developed to adapt to early traumatic and adverse experiences, that is, experiences that disrupted the patient's sense of safety in acute, systematic, or chronic ways. In the

Deontological Guilt and Disgust Sensitivity Modulate Moral Behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: Deontological Guilt (DG), and Altruistic Guilt (AG) emerge from the appraisal of violating an internalized rule or an altruistic principle, respectively. DG is strictly connected with Disgust Sensitivity and plays a key role in the development and maintenance of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Previous studies investigated how DG affects responses to hypothetical moral dilemmas, however how DG and Disgust Sensitivity interact modulating moral behavior is still unknown. METHODS: STUDY 1. 46 healthy participants performed an ecological paradigm in which people can spontaneously

Guilt in bereavement: The role of experiential avoidance and rumination.

Guilt is a common emotional response to bereavement and has been associated with prolonged grief symptoms. Experiential avoidance and rumination are associated with the persistence of grief related symptoms, yet their role in explaining how guilt contributes to grief severity remains unclear. This study examined whether experiential avoidance and rumination mediate the association between guilt and prolonged grief symptoms in bereaved adults. A community sample of 690 Portuguese adults who experienced an expected or unexpected loss completed measures of guilt, experiential avoidance, ruminatio

Deletion of 17p in cancers: Guilt by (p53) association.

Monoallelic deletion of the short arm of chromosome 17 (del17p) is a recurrent abnormality in cancers with poor outcomes. Best studied in relation to haematological malignancies, associated functional outcomes are attributed mainly to loss and/or dysfunction of TP53, which is located at 17p13.1, but the wider impact of deletion of other genes located on 17p is poorly understood. 17p is one of the most gene-dense regions of the genome and includes tumour suppressor genes additional to TP53, genes essential for cell survival and proliferation, as well as small and long non-coding RNAs. In this r

Shame, Guilt, and Self-Consciousness in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: the role of self-conscious emotions (SCE) such as shame and guilt in eating disorders (ED) has been systematically studied only in recent years, but it is still debated. This study aims to investigate the role of SCE in anorexia nervosa (AN), evaluating the role of self-consciousness. METHODS: fifty-five individuals with AN and seventy-four healthy controls (HC) were enrolled and completed a battery of tests evaluating the proneness to feel shame and guilt, as well as comparing self-consciousness, eating, and general psychopathology. RESULTS: individuals with AN showed a higher p

Prevalence and correlates of maladaptive guilt in middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive guilt can develop by age three and is associated with severe affective psychopathology in adolescents and adults. Yet, little is known about its prevalence prior to adolescence, or which children are at greatest risk of developing this symptom. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of maladaptive guilt in middle childhood. METHODS: This study examined a large community sample of 9-to 10-year-old children (N = 4485) from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Maladaptive guilt was assessed through the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disor

Atrial Fibrillation and Sleep Apnoea: Guilt by Association?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are both common, often underdiagnosed conditions with serious sequelae. An association between these two conditions has been recognised but the nature of this relationship remains a topic of active debate. Despite that lack of strong, randomised controlled trials, there is a considerable body of data indicating that not only does untreated OSA provide the substrates and triggers for AF but that OSA, itself, is also a therapeutic target for the management of cardiovascular disease in general and of AF in particular.

[Intensification of interpersonal sense of guilt in patients with schizophrenia].

AIM: The article presented results of a research designed to compare the feeling of guilt in healthy adults and in persons diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. METHOD: One hundred people diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia participated in the research and 100 people without diagnosed psychopathology (control group). RESULTS: The findings of the research showed that the persons from the clinical group obtained much higher results in all the tests measuring a sense of guilt and that interpersonal guilt in persons suffering from paranoid schizophrenia in a majority of cases significantly is

Coping with guilt and shame after gambling loss.

In this study we examined the relations between guilt and shame and coping strategies in response to gambling loss. Based on H.B. Lewis's (Shame & guilt in neurosis. New York: International Universities Press, 1971) account of guilt and shame, we proposed that unlike guilt, the experience of shame involves the attribution of gambling loss to stable and global internal factors (i.e., self-devaluation). We hypothesized that problem gambling severity would be more strongly associated with the intensity of shame than with the intensity of guilt following gambling loss. Further, we hypothesized tha
