Cholera epidemic in Guinea-Bissau (2008): the importance of "place".

BACKGROUND: As resources are limited when responding to cholera outbreaks, knowledge about where to orient interventions is crucial. We describe the cholera epidemic affecting Guinea-Bissau in 2008 focusing on the geographical spread in order to guide prevention and control activities. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted two studies: 1) a descriptive analysis of the cholera epidemic in Guinea-Bissau focusing on its geographical spread (country level and within the capital); and 2) a cross-sectional study to measure the prevalence of houses with at least one cholera case in the most a…

Medical Ethnobotany of the Bissau-Guinean Community of Migrants Living in Northern Italy and Comparison with the Ethnopharmacology of Guinea-Bissau.

This study compares the knowledge of medicinal plants of Bissau-Guinean migrants now established in Italy with the ethnopharmacology still present in their country of origin. We also investigated how traditional ethnobotanical knowledge is changing following the phenomenon of migration from Africa to Europe. The ethnobotanical data were collected during 2017-2018, by interviewing 49 informants belonging to 8 ethnic groups, living in 8 provinces of northern Italy. The final inventory of botanical taxa included 81 species belonging to 34 families, with Fabaceae and Malvaceae the most represented

Household costs of seeking BCG vaccination in rural Guinea-Bissau.

In Guinea-Bissau, a vial of BCG vaccine is often not opened unless 10 infants are present for vaccination, with the aim of reducing vaccine wastage. This causes delays in vaccination, as previously demonstrated in Guinea-Bissau and other low-income countries. Reducing wastage of BCG vaccine to save money may deprive infants of important health benefits and transfer costs from the vaccination programme to mothers. Using the Bandim Health Project's rural Health and Demographic Surveillance System, we interviewed mothers of infants aged 1-11 months about household costs of seeking BCG vaccination…

Risk factors for positive tuberculin skin test in Guinea-Bissau.

BACKGROUND: The tuberculin skin test is used for tracing of tuberculosis transmission and identifying individuals in need of prophylactic treatment. METHODS: Using a case-control study design, we recruited 220 smear-positive tuberculosis cases and 223 randomly selected healthy community controls in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, during 1999-2000. Tuberculin skin tests were performed on family members of cases and controls (n = 1059 and n = 921, respectively). Induration of 10 mm or greater was considered positive. Risk factors were calculated for children (<15 years) and adults separately in multivar…

Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis infections in patients attending STD and family planning clinics in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

Accurate clinical and laboratory data about sexually transmitted diseases (STD) prevalence in Guinea-Bissau are not available. These data are important, since HIV2 is prevalent in this country, rates of HIV1 are increasing and STDs facilitate HIV transmission. Since DNA amplification methods have demonstrated to accurately diagnose chlamydial infections and gonorrhoea, the Amplicor CT/NG PCR Assay with Internal Control of Amplification (Roche Diagnostic System, Branchburg, NJ, USA) was used to estimate the prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis genital infections in STDs…

The Epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum Malaria in the Bijagos Islands of Guinea-Bissau.

Distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), passive detection and treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) are the mainstay malaria control measures of Guinea-Bissau's national control programme. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum on Bubaque, the most populous island of the country's remote Bijagos archipelago. A cross-sectional survey was performed at the start of the rainy season in August 2017. Participants were recruited using systematic random sampling in a two…

Prevalence of community-acquired bacteraemia in Guinea-Bissau: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of bloodstream infections is insufficiently studied in children in Africa and many healthcare facilities lack the capacity to identify invasive disease. Often studies have been limited to febrile patients or patients admitted to hospital. METHODS: Blood cultures and malaria diagnostics was performed on 372 consecutive children presenting with tachycardia and/or fever to a referral paediatric emergency department in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. Bacterial species detection, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular typing were performed. The capacity of clinical parame…

Stillbirths in urban Guinea-Bissau: A hospital- and community-based study.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth rates remain high in many low-income settings, with fresh (intrapartum) stillbirths accounting for a large part due to limited obstetrical care. We aimed to determine the stillbirth rate and identify potentially modifiable factors associated with stillbirth in urban Guinea-Bissau. METHODS: The study was carried out by the Bandim Health Project (BHP), a Health and Demographic Surveillance System site in the capital Bissau. We assessed stillbirth rates in a hospital cohort consisting of all deliveries at the maternity ward at the National Hospital Simão Mendes (HNSM), and…

Noma in an HIV infected patient in Guinea-Bissau: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Noma is a multifactorial and multibacterial opportunistic infection that initially causes necrotic gingivitis but rapidly spreads to the nearby orofacial tissue resulting in sloughing and severe deformation of the facial structures. The majority of cases are seen in young children under the age of 6 years. Noma is strongly associated with poverty, malnutrition and immunosuppression, and is often preceded by severe systemic infections such as measles and malaria. Only few cases of noma infection in adults have been described. CASE REPORT: We present here a case report with a 32-yea
