Background/Objectives: Conduct Disorder (CD) involves persistent behavior violating societal norms and others' rights. A subgroup of adolescents with CD exhibits callous-unemotional (CU) traits, which are linked to severe antisocial behavior and poorer long-term outcomes. Research suggests parenting plays an important role in the development of CU traits. However, few studies have explored the role of maternal and paternal parenting practices mediating the link between CU traits and violence within the same study. Methods: This study included 222 adolescents with Conduct Disorder (Mage = 15.7,

INTRODUCTION: There may be an association between violence and methamphetamine use. We hypothesized that trauma patients screening positive for methamphetamines are more likely to present after penetrating trauma and have increased mortality.
METHODS: The 2017-2019 TQIP was used to 1:2 match methamphetamine (meth+) patients to patients testing negative for all drugs (meth-). Patients with polysubstance/alcohol use were excluded. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were performed.
RESULTS: The rate of methamphetamine use was 3.1 %. After matching, there was no difference in vitals, inj

IMPORTANCE: Gun violence and youth mental illness are urgent public health concerns. Although prior studies have linked community violence with pediatric mental health outcomes, little is known about the connection between exposure to hyperlocal gun violence and the short-term risk of a psychiatric emergency at the individual level.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the impact of recent, nearby gun violence exposure on pediatric recurrent psychiatric exacerbation risk following an index psychiatric hospital admission or emergency department (ED) visit.
DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal cohort study us

Fatal and nonfatal injuries resulting from gun violence remain a persistent problem in the United States. The available research suggests that gun violence diffuses among people and across places through social relationships. Understanding the relationship between gun violence within social networks and individual gun violence risk is critical in preventing the spread of gun violence within populations. This systematic review examines the existing scientific evidence on the transmission of gun and other weapon-related violence in household, intimate partner, peer, and co-offending networks. Ou

Firearm violence is a leading cause of death in the United States and is marked by profound racial and socioeconomic disparities. Existing research has identified many of the conditions that make interpersonal firearm violence more likely, and intervention research shows that firearm regulation, targeted policing, and community-based programs can reduce harm. Yet firearm violence remains high, persistent, and unequally distributed. This article develops a racial capitalism framework to explain that persistence. Building on structural racism approaches, it asks how the conditions associated wit

BACKGROUND: Unstably housed women experience high levels of violence. While previous studies have investigated psychological, physical, and sexual violence, weapon and gun violence are rarely delineated. We examined factors associated with experiencing violence as an adult among unhoused and unstably housed women, with a focus on gun violence.
METHODS: We recruited women with a history of housing instability from San Francisco homeless shelters, street encampments, free meal programs, low-income hotels, and health clinics. Participants completed interviews including questions regarding both c

Two waves of longitudinal data from 1,049 African American youth living in extreme poverty are used to examine the impact of exposure to violence (Time 1) and violent behavior (Time 1) on first time gun carrying (Time 2). Multivariate logistic regression results indicate that (a) violent behavior (Time 1) increased the likelihood of initiation of gun carrying (Time 2) by 76% after controlling for exposure to violence at Time 1, which is consistent with the stepping stone model of youth gun carrying, and (b) youth who were both exposed to violence at Time 1 and engaged in violent behavior at Ti

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532019eng
We examined whether childhood socioeconomic disadvantage was associated with adolescent gun violence and whether early symptoms of conduct disorder and/or exposure to delinquent peers accounted for the linkage. Participants were 503 predominately Black and White boys who were recruited in 1st grade from Pittsburgh public schools. Multi-informant assessments were conducted regularly from approximately ages 7 to 20. A latent socioeconomic disadvantage factor was estimated with census-tract and parent-reported data when boys were about age 7½. Latent growth curve models assessed parent/teacher-re

OBJECTIVE: Violent injuries are a common reason for pediatric emergency department (ED) visits, with gun violence being the leading cause of violent death among children. The objective of this study was to assess for patterns of pediatric ED usage that are associated with future ED visits for violent injuries.
METHODS: This case-control study included youths aged 6 to 19 years who presented to a pediatric ED over a 3-year period due to a physical assault (PA) or their first known gunshot wound (GSW). We compared them with age-, race-, and sex-matched youths presenting for nonviolent medical c

OBJECTIVE: Highly publicized incidents in which people with apparent mental illnesses use guns to victimize strangers have important implications for public views of people with mental illnesses and the formation of mental health and gun policy. The study aimed to provide more data about this topic.
METHODS: MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study data were analyzed to determine the prevalence of violence by 951 patients after discharge from a psychiatric hospital, including gun violence, violence toward strangers, and gun violence toward strangers.
RESULTS: Two percent of patients committe

BACKGROUND: Youth exposure to gun violence is increasing and we must better understand its impact on mental health and substance use disorders in young adults.
METHODS: The 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey recruited n=1,008 young adults. Multivariable logistic regressions were used for mental illness and substance use disorder outcomes on exposure to gun violence in childhood while controlling for sexual and gender identity, race/ethnicity, age, and social ladder.
RESULTS: Exposure to gun violence in childhood is highly prevalent (24.7%) and associated with higher odds of depression (AOR

This article outlines a four-part strategy for future research in mental health and complementary disciplines that will broaden understanding of mass shootings and multi-victim gun homicides. First, researchers must abandon the starting assumption that acts of mass violence are driven primarily by diagnosable psychopathology in isolated "lone wolf" individuals. The destructive motivations must be situated, instead, within larger social structures and cultural scripts. Second, mental health professionals and scholars must carefully scrutinize any apparent correlation of violence with mental ill

On November 7, 2018, the National Rifle Association (NRA) issued a tweet advising "self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane." The tweet has galvanized physicians to share their experiences with gun violence through the grassroots #ThisISOurLane campaign. Infectious diseases physicians are regularly called upon to manage complications such as infected wounds and osteomyelitis in gunshot victims. Yet, Infectious Diseases as a specialty has been poorly represented in the national dialogue on gun violence. Over 80 medical societies have endorsed statements on gun violence, including t

Suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States, and in women the second leading cause of injury death overall. Previous studies have suggested links between intimate partner violence and suicide in women. We examined female suicide deaths to identify and describe associated risk factors. We reviewed all reports from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator for female suicide deaths occurring in New Mexico from 1990 to 1994. Information abstracted included demographics, mechanism of death, presence of alcohol/drugs, clinical depression, intimate partner violence, hea

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how characteristics of victims and types of incidents described in a media account of gun violence affect public support for three categories of policies that regulate firearms.
METHODS: A randomized experiment with a sample of US public (N = 3410).
RESULTS: Victim race, particularly if the victim was Black, was a strong predictor of less public support for all tested categories of firearm regulation. Respondents were less supportive of policies to address gun suicide or accidents and more supportive of policy solutions to mass shootings, compared to street-le

Despite the public, political, and media narrative that mental health is at the root of gun violence, evidence is lacking to infer a causal link. This study examines the temporal associations between gun violence (i.e., threatening someone with a gun and gun carrying) and mental health (i.e., anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, hostility, impulsivity, and borderline personality disorder) as well the cross-sectional associations with gun access and gun ownership in a group of emerging adults. Waves 6 (2015) and 8 (2017) data were used from a longitudinal study in Texas, US. Participants were 663

BACKGROUND: Despite being high risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, Black men survivors of gun violence, and particularly young men aged 18-24, seldom participate in mental health services after injury. The aim of this study was to identify barriers to participation in mental health services for this population.
METHODS: Over a 2-year period, 1 hour-long focus group was conducted with three counselors of the local hospital-based violence intervention program and 21 individual, semistructured in-depth interviews were held with Black men who were hospitalized for a firearm-related injury. A

BACKGROUND: Drug and alcohol uses have been linked to the frequency of injury events, recurrent hospital admission for injury, and interpersonal violence. Data regarding the association of recent substance use and injury type and frequency in children and young adults are not available. Such data probably would be valuable in planning interventions to prevent substance use and reduce the risks of injuries.
METHODS: Evidence of substance use was assessed in trauma patients presenting to the authors' level 1 trauma center over a 6-month interval. Demographic data, mechanisms of injury, revised
