Histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of testicular morphology and spermatogenesis in Gymnotus carapo (Teleostei: Gymnotidae).

This work aims to study the testicular morphology and spermatogenesis of Gymnotus carapo to provide information on their reproductive biology which is useful in managing this species as a fishing resource. The testicles were isolated and fixed in 10% formalin; subsequently, they were processed for scanning electron microscopy with conventional histological technique. To analyze the cell proliferation of germline cells and Sertoli cells, immunodetection of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein was performed. In G. carapo spermatogenesis, the spermatogenic line is organized into

Feeding ecology of an Amazonian electric knifefish under altered flood-pulse dynamics caused by hydroelectric damming.

This study evaluated the effects of the controlled flood pulse on diet composition, trophic niche breadth and feeding intensity of Archolaemus janeae, an electric knifefish species with a restricted distribution in the Amazon Basin. Monthly samples were collected from December 2020 to November 2021 in the Volta Grande stretch of the Xingu River, and stomach contents of 134 specimens were analysed. The diet was predominantly composed of aquatic insect larvae, with a notable occurrence of terrestrial plant fragments. Hydrological variation affected diet composition, trophic niche breadth and fee

Description of Encephalon Morphology of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) From Brazil.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a cichlid species native to Africa and is widely farmed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, making it one of the most commercially important aquaculture species. Despite its significance, there is still a lack of detailed anatomical descriptions of its brain. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive anatomical and histological characterisation of the O. niloticus brain. Brain samples were collected from adult fish (n = 19) raised in a commercial aquaculture system in Brazil. The brain morphology of O. niloticus exhibits the gener

Hormone-mediated modulation of the electromotor CPG in pulse-type weakly electric fish. Commonalities and differences across species.

Like stomatogastric activity in crustaceans, vocalization in teleosts and frogs, and locomotion in mammals, the electric organ discharge (EOD) of weakly electric fish is a rhythmic and stereotyped electromotor pattern. The EOD, which functions in both perception and communication, is controlled by a two-layered central pattern generator (CPG), the electromotor CPG, which modifies its basal output in response to environmental and social challenges. Despite major anatomo-functional commonalities in the electromotor CPG across electric fish species, we show that Gymnotus omarorum and Brachyhypopo

Sexual and seasonal plasticity in the emission of social electric signals. Behavioral approach and neural bases.

Behavior in electric fish includes modulations of a stereotyped electric organ discharge (EOD) in addition to locomotor displays. Gymnotiformes can modulate the EOD rate to produce signals that participate in different behaviors. We studied the reproductive behavior of Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus both in the wild and laboratory settings. During the breeding season, fish produce sexually dimorphic social electric signals (SES): males emit three types of chirps (distinguished by their duration and internal structure), and accelerations, whereas females interrupt their EOD. Since these SES impl

Myxobolus axelrodi n. sp. (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) a parasite infecting the brain and retinas of the cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi (Teleostei: Characidae).

An investigation of mortalities in a group of cardinal tetras Paracheirodon axelrodi Meyers, 1936, a popular ornamental fish, revealed myxozoan parasites in ventricles of the brains in 3/10 fish and the ocular retina of a fourth. Parasite impacts were unclear, as additional histopathological findings were present, including bacterial dermatitis and meningitis. Ethanol-preserved specimens pooled from multiple fish were used for morphological characterization of myxospores. Elongate, teardrop myxospores were 20.5 ± 0.7-μm (mean ± SD; range = 19.0-21.8 μm) long, 6.6 ± 0.5-μm (5.7-7.9 μm) wide, an

Taxonomy and molecular phylogeny of Urocleidoides spp. (Monopisthocotyla: Dactylogyridae): Four new species and cophylogenetic patterns in a clade of species parasitizing Characiformes hosts.

Historical reconstruction studies are important for understanding the evolutionary mechanisms associated with different parasite-host systems. Platyhelminths of the classes Monopisthocotyla and Polyopisthocotyla (formerly Monogenoidea or Monogenea) have proven to be excellent models for historical reconstruction studies due to their exceptional parasite specificity, suggesting that cospeciation events are the main pattern observed in these parasite-host systems (i.e., codivergence). However, recent studies indicate that not only cospeciation but also duplication, host-switch, and loss (extinct

Description of two new species of allocreadiid trematodes (Digenea: Allocreadiidae) in middle American freshwater fishes using an integrative taxonomy approach.

Integrative taxonomy uses several sources of information to establish more robust species delimitation criteria. In this study, we followed that approach to describe two new species of allocreadiid trematodes from freshwater fish distributed in locations across Middle America. The new species were first recognized by using sequences of the domains D1-D3 of the ribosomal 28S rRNA gene and then, morphological data (light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), host association, and geographical distribution were considered as additional sources of information to complement the species delimitat

Analysis of intrinsic connectivity in a multifunctional central pacemaker nucleus in vertebrates.

Gymnotiform fish emit electric organ discharges (EODs) for both active electroreception and electrocommunication. In pulse-type species, EODs are generated by a hierarchical electromotor network controlled by a medullary pacemaker nucleus (PN), which comprises intrinsic pacemaker cells (PM-cells) and projecting relay cells (R-cells). Active electroreception requires the emission of stereotyped EODs, an electromotor output that implies a functional PN configuration based on the synchronous rhythmic discharge of PM-cells, a high-safety-factor feedforward transmission to R-cells, and the subseque

Gap junction protein in weakly electric fish (Gymnotide): immunohistochemical localization with emphasis on structures of the electrosensory system.

Electrotonic transmission via gap junctions appears to be essential for both the relay and integration of information in nuclear groups involved in the electrolocation and electrocommunication systems of weakly electric fish. An affinity-purified antibody against the 27 kD gap-junctional polypeptide (GJP) from rat liver was used to determine immunohistochemically the distribution of GJP-immunoreactivity (GJP-IR) in electrosensory structures and some other brain regions of the gymnotiform fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus. At the ultrastructural level, immunolabelling with this antibody was local

SK channels gate information processing in vivo by regulating an intrinsic bursting mechanism seen in vitro.

Understanding the mechanistic substrates of neural computations that lead to behavior remains a fundamental problem in neuroscience. In particular, the contributions of intrinsic neural properties such as burst firing and dendritic morphology to the processing of behaviorally relevant sensory input have received much interest recently. Pyramidal cells within the electrosensory lateral line lobe of weakly electric fish display an intrinsic bursting mechanism that relies on somato-dendritic interactions when recorded in vitro: backpropagating somatic action potentials trigger dendritic action po
