The use of robotics in gynecology and reproductive medicine.

Over the last several years, there has been a significant development in the utilization of robotics in gynecology and reproductive medicine. Robotic surgery offers several technical advantages over conventional laparoscopy, including stable and highly magnified 3D vision, enhanced hand-eye coordination, a surgeon-controlled field, optimized ergonomics, motion scaling, and physiological tremor filtering. Women's Health has solicited and published articles as part of a special collection aiming to focus on the current progress of robotics in gynecology and reproductive medicine. In this interes

Electrosurgery and Other Technical Advancements in Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery - An Update.

Electrosurgery in gynecology has changed over the past few decades. The use of energy-based devices, especially in minimally invasive procedures, is extremely important for preparation, short reconvalescence and patient safety. Recently, there have been major advances in energy-based surgical devices that have further shortened OR time and increased patient safety. Although bipolar and monopolar electrosurgery is still very important, the introduction of high-frequency ultrasound in gynecologic surgery has improved cutting and coagulation by lowering thermal damage in the surrounding tissue. Robotic surgery in gynaecology: Scientific Impact Paper No. 71 (July 2022).

The use of robotic-assisted keyhole surgery in gynaecology has expanded in recent years owing to technical advances. These include 3D viewing leading to improved depth perception, limitation of tremor, potential for greater precision and discrimination of tissues, a shorter learning curve and improved comfort for surgeons compared with conventional keyhole and open abdominal surgery. Robotic-assisted keyhole surgery, compared with conventional keyhole surgery, improves surgical performance without increasing operating time, minimises blood loss and intra- or postoperative complications, while

Urologic surgery in gynecologic oncology: a large single-institution experience.

OBJECTIVE: The increasing tendency to a tailored treatment in gynecologic oncology has required the extension of the intervention to other non-gynecological structures, as the urinary district. Moreover the role of the urological surgery in gynecologic oncology is still not completely explored. The objective of the study is to evaluate the occurrence of urological procedures in gynecologic oncology surgery. METHODS: Patients admitted to the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Catholic University of Sacred Hearth, Rome, Italy, between January 2009 and December 2012, were retrospectively analyzed

A systematic scoping review of Hugo™ RAS (robot-assisted surgery) docking concordance in gynecologic robotic surgery.

The Hugo™ RAS system (Medtronic) is a modular four-arm robotic platform increasingly used in gynecologic surgery since its 2021 European approval. A first international Delphi exercise on docking was published in 2026, but whether published practice aligns with it, and how completely docking variables are reported, remains unmapped. We conducted a systematic scoping review (PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews, PRISMA-ScR) with structured analytical extensions of the gynecologic Hugo™ RAS literature published 1 January 2022-15 May 2026, searching PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane CENTRAL, Clini

Incidence, Detection, and Management of Urological Injuries in Obstetric and Gynecologic Surgeries: A Five-Year Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Urological injuries are rare but significant complications of obstetric and gynecologic procedures, associated with morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, and medicolegal implications. Bladder injuries are typically identified intraoperatively, while ureteric injuries are often delayed presentation. Early recognition and prompt management are critical to reduce complications. The study aimed to evaluate the incidence, type, timing of detection, management, and outcomes of urological injuries in patients undergoing obstetric and gynecologic surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This ret

Office-Based Gynecologic Surgery (OBGS): Past, Present, and Future: Part I.

The gynecologist's office was, historically speaking, the original setting for surgical practice. In 1809, Ephraim McDowell performed the first ovariotomy and removed a 22.5-pound tumor from Jane Crawford in his Danville, Kentucky office-decades before the development of anesthesia or the aseptic technique. Three developments-introduction of surgical anesthesia, improved operative techniques, and the evolution of the medical-economic environment-shaped surgical practice for over two centuries. The latter part of the 20th century also brought two dramatic changes that affected gynecologic pract

Surgical Techniques for Diaphragmatic Resection During Cytoreduction in Advanced or Recurrent Ovarian Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Optimal cytoreduction is one the main factors improving survival outcomes in patients affected by ovarian cancer (OC). It is estimated that approximately 40% of OC patients have gross disease located on the diaphragm. However, no mature data evaluating outcomes of surgical techniques for the management of diaphragmatic carcinosis exist. In the present study, we aimed to estimate surgery-related morbidity of different surgical techniques for diaphragmatic cytoreduction in advanced or recurrent OC. METHODS: PubMed (MEDLINE), Web of Science, and Clincaltrials.gov databases were search

Health Care Sustainability: Strategies for Operating Rooms and Urogynecologic Procedures.

In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that climate change is the biggest threat to public health. Health care has a large carbon footprint with operating rooms contributing an inordinate amount to this issue. Surgeons have an opportunity to lead sustainability efforts by changing individual practices and collaborating with other stakeholders. Some of these changes that have been suggested include using reusable devices, including gowns, drapes, and specula; updating instrument trays and surgeon preference cards to minimize opening unused instruments; using clean energy sources
