Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in newly diagnosed HIV seropositive patients.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Immunocompromised individuals mainly HIV infected patients are at a great risk for developing toxoplasmosis. The presence of toxoplasmosis among HIV-infected patients directly correlates with the prevalence of anti- Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and the degree of immunosuppression (measured by CD4 counts). The data regarding the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in HIV-infected patients are scarce in India. Therefore, this study was initiated to find out the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in treatment-naïve HIV seropositive patients and to determine its association with

Seroprevalence of TORCH infections in antenatal and HIV positive patient populations.

BACKGROUND: The TORCH (Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the Herpes Simplex Virus) cause range of diseases in pregnant women and HIV patients and lead to adverse fetal outcomes when not treated on time, in HIV positive can cause life threating infections. There is inadequate data available of these infections in India. METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken to determine the seroprevalence of the TORCH infections in antenatal and HIV/AIDS patients at a tertiary care centre. The laboratory data pertaining to the period Jan 2012-May 2014 was analyzed. The study populat

Seroprevalence of HIV, HSV-2, and Treponema pallidum in the Kosovarian population.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of infection with HIV, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and Treponema pallidum (TP) in a Kosovarian population. A cross-sectional study was performed in Peja, Kosovo, from January to March 2005, among 1285 persons recruited at the Peja Hospital. The seroprevalence of HIV, HSV-2, and TP was evaluated, and the viral correlates for each infection were analysed. No HIV-positive cases were found. The seroprevalence of HSV-2 was 20.2%. The factors significantly associated with HSV-2 infection at the multivariate analysis were: female

Seroprevalence of Bartonella spp. infection in HIV patients in Catalonia, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Although the first clinical descriptions of Bartonella infection were associated with immunocompromised patient with bacillary angiomatosis, we currently know that this organism is directly involved in diseases affecting a large number of patients, regardless of their immune status. Cat scratch disease, hepatic peliosis, and some cases of bacteraemia and endocarditis, are directly caused by some species of the genus Bartonella. The purpose of this study was to determinate the prevalence of IgG antibodies against Bartonella henselae and B. quintana in HIV patients and to identify th

Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus and HIV-1 seroprevalences in prostitutes in Djibouti.

Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) is linked causally to Kaposi's sarcoma. Epidemiological studies have shown that KSHV transmission can occur during sex among homosexual men, but heterosexual transmission seems to be very rare in KSHV low prevalence countries. A seroepidemiological study was conducted to determine whether KSHV is transmitted sexually between heterosexuals in an endemic country. Sera from 282 subjects of African origin living in Djibouti were tested for antibodies to KSHV and HIV-1. Among the 282 individuals, 43 were female prostitutes working in the streets (group 1), 123 we

An increase in rates of obstetric haemorrhage in a setting of high HIV seroprevalence.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric haemorrhage (OH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, although, indirectly, HIV is also a leading cause of maternal mortality in some settings with a high HIV seroprevalence. OBJECTIVE: To determine the possible association between increasing rates of OH and HIV or its treatment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of women with OH at King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa, over a 3-year period (2009 - 2011), during which the drug regimen for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission was evolving from single-dose nevirapine …

[Study of HIV seroprevalence in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in 1999 in Chad].

Tuberculosis is the most common opportunistic disease occurring in the course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. With the development of HIV infection in Chad, tuberculosis has quickly become a major public health concern. The purpose of this cross-sectional study in two tuberculosis centres (Moundou and Ndjamena) was to evaluate HIV seroprevalence, epidemiological characteristics and risk factors in patients with tuberculosis. All patients with positive sputum-smears who had never been treated for tuberculosis previously were eligible. A total of 466 patients (sex ratio M/F: 1.9…

Orofacial manifestations and seroprevalence of HIV infection in Namibian dental patients.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In an anonymous study of HIV-I sero-reactivity in dental patients in a Government clinic in Namibia, 29 (7%) out of 405 patients (10 female and 19 male) were confirmed as HIV-infected. HIV-antibody testing was done cheaply and conveniently by collecting and storing finger-prick blood on absorbent paper, and eluting the samples 7 weeks later. Testing was done by GACPAT, a simple, inexpensive temperature independent assay which requires no specialised equipment. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Six patients had orofacial lesions, including Kaposi's sarcoma, leukoplakia (bilateral

HIV in UK prisons: a review of seroprevalence, transmission and patterns of risk.

Prisons contain individuals at high risk of HIV infection, notably through intravenous drug use. For complex political, social and legal reasons penal institutions in the UK are unable to provide condoms and clean needles. The outbreak of HIV and hepatitis B that occurred in a Scottish prison in 1993 focused attention on the potential problems. Debate about the issue is hampered by a lack of useful information. Current data about risk behaviour and seroprevalence is reviewed, and compared with experience in other countries. Injecting drug use in prison appears to be common, and the majority wh

HTLV seroprevalence in people using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in England.

OBJECTIVES: HTLV-1 is predominantly a sexually-transmitted infection but testing is not mentioned in HIV-PrEP guidelines. We ascertained HTLV-1/HTLV-2 seroprevalence amongst HIV-PrEP users in England. METHODS: An unlinked anonymous seroprevalence study. RESULTS: Amongst 2015 HIV-PrEP users, 95% were men, 76% of white ethnicity and 83% had been born in Europe. There were no HTLV-1/HTLV-2 seropositive cases (95% confidence interval 0% - 0.18%). CONCLUSIONS: There were no HTLV positive cases, likely reflecting the demographic of mostly white and European-born individuals. Similar studies are n

Seroprevalence of common vaccine-preventable viral infections in HIV-positive adults.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: Guidelines recommend a proactive approach for offering vaccination to susceptible HIV-infected patients. The size of the HIV-positive population that remains susceptible to vaccine-preventable infections is largely unknown. The study determined serostatus and recalled infection and vaccination history for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella-zoster virus (VZV), hepatitis A, and hepatitis B among HIV-positive adults accessing routine care. METHODS: The study recruited 200 consecutive patients with a median CD4 count of 461 (interquartile range 326, 641) cells/mm(3); 62.5% wer

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among HIV Patients in Jahrom, Southern Iran.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important opportunistic agent especially in immunocompromised hosts and can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Hence, detection and monitoring of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies are of a great interest in HIV-infected patients. A study on the prevalence of toxoplasmosis and associated risk factors was carried out among HIV-infected patients in Jahrom, southern Iran. The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies was 21.1% in HIV-infected patients by ELISA. PCR was performed on all of the samples, and 1 of the blood samples was positively detected. Among the HIV pat

Measles and Rubella Seroprevalence Among HIV-infected and Uninfected Zambian Youth.

BACKGROUND: Measles and congenital rubella syndrome remain significant causes of morbidity and mortality despite available vaccines. HIV-infected youth may be at increased risk of measles because of greater waning immunity after vaccination. At a population level, they constitute a potentially large pool of susceptibles to measles and rubella. More data among HIV-infected youth in sub-Saharan Africa are needed to guide vaccination policy and control strategies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was nested within 2 ongoing studies of malaria and HIV in Zambia. Dried blood spot cards from you

HIV seroprevalence in hematologic patients other than hemophiliacs at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Recently there have been increasing reports of HIV infection acquired through transfusion of HIV seronegative blood in Thailand due to high incidence of HIV new infection in blood donors. Blood or blood components (BC) prepared from HIV seronegative blood donation pose significant hazards to recipients because of the risk of viremia during the "window period" of HIV infection. This paper presents the HIV seroprevalence in hematologic patients other than hemophiliacs who received multiple blood transfusion at Ramathibodi Hospital. The retrospective analysis was done on 167 patients: 132 thalass…
