A study of histocompatibility (HLA) antigens in 69 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) showed an increased incidence of HLA-B7 and HLA-B8 related to the age at onset and sex of the patient. Young females and males aged 15-39 years at onset were associated with HLA-B7 and females aged over 40 years with HLA-B8. This supports previous studies concerning sex and age specific onset rates in DLE which suggests that there is more than one genotype in this disorder. Female patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at all ages of onset showed a significant association with HLA-B8. F

Class I HLA antigens were determined in 42 patients with diffuse toxic goiter (DTG), 31 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and in 71 donors. A degree of association of antigen and disease (R) and difference in the frequency of some HLA antigen bearing in the groups of patients and healthy persons were revealed. Positive association of DTG with antigens A1, A3, B8, haplotype A1-B8 and AT with A1 and B35 was established. The bearing of B13 antigen in DTG and A11 in AT was a protective factor in the development of the above diseases. A study of the comparative distribution of HLA antigens

CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) recognize peptide antigens in the context of class I MHC antigen molecules. To identify peptides capable of eliciting anti-Chlamydia trachomatis CTL responses, 13 synthetic peptides conforming to human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B8- or -B35-predicted binding motifs were synthesized using sequences based on C. trachomatis major outer membrane protein (MOMP) and heat shock protein 60 (hsp60). Two of 11 HLA-B35-predicted binding peptides were able to stabilize HLA-B35 in an in vitro binding assay. All peptides were tested in CTL assays using peripheral blood mononu

The study of distribution of HLA antigens among Georgian population in case of autoimmune thyreoiditis revealed a statistically significant association of HLA-B8 antigen with autoimmune thyreoiditis. For statistical analysis we used following criterion: relative risk, attributive risk, preventive fraction, correlation coefficient and immunogenetic correction (P). Without compatibility to these criteria, there were no associations of the HLA antigens with the diseases. Although 8 of the antigens gave relative risk more than one, but only HLA B8 gave real association with autoimmune thyreoiditis

1. The association or interaction of histocompatibility antigens (HLA) and acanthosis nigricans with type A insulin resistance was studied in 13 patients (10 from family I, 2 from family II and an isolated case) for both sexes. 2. HLA typing for the A, B, C and D antigens was performed by a standard microcytotoxicity test for all patients and for 100 normal controls from the same geographic area. 3. The frequency of HLA B8 was 21% in the control group and 100% in patients with acanthosis nigricans. The frequency of HLA A1B8 was 15% in controls and 73% in acanthotic patients. 4. All the members

One hundred fifty patients with toxic and scintigraphically diffuse goiter were HLA typed (A, B, C, DR). One group consisted of 101 patients with concomitant Graves' ophthalmopathy and/or TSH-binding inhibiting antibodies (TBIAb). Forty nine patients had neither ophthalmopathy nor TBIAb. The former group showed a higher prevalence of HLA-B8 and DR3 compared to a normal control group. The latter group showed a higher frequency of HLA-DR5, whereas the HLA-B8 and DR3 antigens were slightly below normal prevalence. These data indicate an immunogenetic heterogeneity in patients with toxic diffuse g

The incidence rate of HLA class I and II antigens has been studied in 168 and 82 patients with diffuse toxic goiter, respectively. Positive association is found for HLA antigens A2, A3, A28, B8, B15, B17, Cw4, DR5; negative one with antigens A24, Bw4, Bw6, Cw1, Cw2, Cw3, Cw5, DR9. Prevalence of antigens B15, B17, Cw4, DR5 is associated with thyrotoxicosis severity, A2 with recurrent toxic goiter. Antigen B8 plays the role of an immunogenetic marker of endocrine ophthalmopathy.

HLA-A, B, C antigens were studied in 86 white european patients with Graves' disease, using a lymphocyte toxicity microtechnique and the results were compared with those obtained in 356 healthy subjects. HLA-D (DR) antigens were studied by the same technique after prolonged incubation and the results were compared with those of 100 healthy controls. The incidence of DRw3 was 51.16% in the patients as against 20% in controls, the difference being highly significant (pc--PC less than 0.0003) - corrected p = p multiplied by the number of antigens tested. There was also a significant (pc less than

HLA antigens were examined by microdroplet lymphocyte cytotoxicity in 31 patients with Sjögrens syndrome. Fifty percent of 22 Causcasian patients (7 of 17 females and 4 of 5 males) had HLA-B8, as compared to 21% of 1205 controls (P=0.002). The presence of HLA-B8 was not correlated with parotid salivary flow, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or focus score. Because of its association with a number of autoimmune diseases, including Sjögren's syndrome, it is suggested that HLA-B8 is genetically liked to an immune response gene(s) that predisposes the individual to autoimmune phenomena. The expression

The presence of HLA antigens B8 and DR3 in an individual is associated with his predisposition to developing Basedow's disease. A comparative study of a clinical course and immunological characterization of this disease in 208 patients, divided with relation to the presence or absence of the above antigens, showed that the disease developed in patients with HLA B8 and DR3 at a younger age and was accompanied twice as more frequently by ophthalmopathy. Thyrotoxicosis relapsed among these patients in conservative therapy much more frequently. A relapse after surgical intervention in the study gr

Forty-five Hungarian and Finnish children from 1.5 to 15 years with dermatitis herpetiformis were studied for HLA antigens, jejunal morphology on gluten-containing diet and associated diseases in the patients and their relatives. A strong association with HLA-B8 was found in patients of both nationalities, the relative risks were 12.8 and 9.6, respectively. The Hungarian patients were also typed for HLA-DR locus, and an association with DR3 but not with DR7 was observed. Patients with subtotal villous atrophy had slightly more often HLA-B8 and DR3 than those with milder intestinal lesions. Ato

AIM: To report on our large German collective and updated data of 142 patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1.
METHODS: Key investigations performed were liver biopsy, serum autoantibodies as well as serum markers such as IgG and elevated transaminases. Antinuclear antigen (ANA) and smooth muscle antigen (SMA) autoantibodies characterized type 1 AIH. Type 3 (AIH) was solely characterized by the occurrence of soluble liver antigen/liver-pancreas antigen (SLA/LP) autoantibodies either with or without ANA or SMA autoantibodies.
RESULTS: Most prevalent HLAs were A2 (68 patients, 48%), B8

Nineteen patients with Sjögren's syndrome were evaluated for the presence of HLA-B8 and HLA-Dw3. HLA-B8 was found in 57.8% of patients and 20.1% of 96 controls (P less than 0.001). HLA-Dw3 was detected in 73.7% of the patients and 24.0% of controls (P less than 0.0001). Statistical evaluation of the association of both antigens with Sjögren's syndrome revealed that the primary association was with HLA-Dw3 (P less than 0.005). Patients with HLA-Dw3 had a lower mean parotid salivary flow rate (0.8 +/- 0.3 ml/10 minutes/gland versus 5.6 +/- 1.2 ml/10 minutes/gland, P less than 0.0004) and a more

The increased frequency of HLA-B8 in Sjögren's syndrome was recently reported independently by Gershwin et al. (1975) and Iványi et al. (1976). The association of HLA-B8 antigen with other diseases, characterized generally by impaired immunologic reactivity, has been shown (see Svejgaard et al. 1975, Dausset & Hors 1975), and in some of these diseases MLC typing has revealed the strong association also with the Dw3 determinant. The degree of association with each of the two, B8 and Dw3, varied between different diseases, in some of them having been reported to be higher for antigen B8 (Möller

An association between Graves' disease and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system has previously been reported. The disease was more strongly associated with the HLA D locus antigen Dw3 than with HLA B8. Products of the HLA D locus are determined by the interaction of test cells with standard typing lymphocytes, a technically difficult procedure. Recently, it has been possible to type serologically for D locus related (DRw) specificities on peripheral bone marrow-derived (B) lymphocytes. Blood B lymphocytes from 50 unrelated controls and 41 patients with Graves' disease were typed for seven

One-hundred-and-forty-seven patients with autoimmune thyroiditis were studied with respect to HLA antigens as they related to various clinical features. HLA--B8 was found to be significantly increased among 59 patients with atrophic thyroiditis (57% vs. 26% for controls) but was identical to controls in 88 patients with goitrous thyroiditis (26%). No relation was found in either group between B8 and thyroid autoantibody titer or, in the case of goitrous thyroiditis, the rate of progression of the disease. Thus a link seems to be established between Graves' disease and atrophic thyroiditis in t

Patients with simple and/or complicated intestinal bilharziasis and normal controls were chosen for CBC, complete urine and stool analysis, liver function tests, liver biopsy, sigmoidoscopy and rectal biopsy. HLA typing was done by microcytotoxicity test. A statistically significant increased frequency of HLA-B8 antigen was present in with or without polyposis and with or without hepatosplenomegaly, as compared to controls (P less than 0.01). Also HLA-B8 showed a statistically significant increased frequency in those with or without polyposis and with hepatosplenomegaly and without polyposis (

The genetic marker histocompatibility antigen HLA-B8 is present in 80% of patients with gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). We studied 35 families with at least one affected member to determine whether an HLA-region gene alone could determine susceptibility to GSE. The incidence of HLA-B8 in the patients was 69% vs 22% for normals (P less than 0.001). The incidence of GSE in HLA-genotype-identical siblings of patients was only 8%, and in HLA-B8-haplotype-identical siblings and parents of patients was only 14% and 5%, respectively. In addition, intestinal biopsies of HLA-identical or partially
