Spinocerebellar syndrome in patients infected with human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/HTLV-II): report of 3 cases from Panama.

Cerebellar symptoms at onset are unusual in HTLV-I/II-associated tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). A prospective study of neurological disorders in Panama (1985-1990) revealed 13 patients with TSP and 3 with HTLV-I/II-associated spinocerebellar syndrome (HSCS) presenting at onset loss of balance, wide-based stance and gait, truncal instability, and mild leg ataxia (vermian cerebellar syndrome), with absent upper limb dysmetria but with postural tremor, downbeat nystagmus, and dysarthria. In 4-5 years, spinal cord manifestations of TSP developed, including spastic paraparesis, pyramidal signs

Induction of HLA class II in HTLV-I infected neuronal cell lines.

Human T-lymphotropic virus-I (HTLV-I) has been etiologically linked with HTLV-I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a neurologic disease. The characteristic pathological finding in HAM/TSP is marked mononuclear infiltration of the CNS with destruction of the long tracts of the spinal cord. An increased expression of HLA surface antigens and cytokines in the CNS is associated with this inflammatory response. Furthermore, there is evidence for the presence of HTLV-I in HAM/TSP CNS specimens using in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction techniques. The relati

Increased mortality associated with HTLV-II infection in blood donors: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: HTLV-I is associated with adult T-cell leukemia, and both HTLV-I and -II are associated with HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Several published reports suggest that HTLV-I may lead to decreased survival, but HTLV-II has not previously been associated with mortality. RESULTS: We examined deaths among 138 HTLV-I, 358 HTLV-II, and 759 uninfected controls enrolled in a prospective cohort study of U.S. blood donors followed biannually since 1992. Proportional hazards models yielded hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between mortality and HTLV infe

Seroprevalence and risk factors for HTLV-I/II infection among female prostitutes in the United States.

We tested 1305 female prostitutes from eight areas of the United States for antibodies to human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I/II. Overall, 6.7% were human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I/II seropositive (with antibodies to both gag and env gene products). The seroprevalence rates ranged from 0% in southern Nevada to 25.4% in Newark, NJ. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I/II seropositivity was independently associated with race (odds ratio, 4.68), intravenous drug use (odds ratio, 2.94), hepatitis B seropositivity (odds ratio, 2.87), recruitment in Newark (odds ratio, 2.34), and more ye

[HTLV-I/II seroprevalence and risk factors associated with infection in a blood donor population in Córdoba, Argentina].

In this study we have determined the seroprevalence of infections by HTLV-I/II in the blood donor population from the city of Córdoba. A total of 5476 blood donor sera were screened for HTLV-I/II antibodies by particle agglutination assay (PA) (SERODIA HTLV-I, Fujirebio INC, Tokyo, Japan). The reactive sera samples were confirmed by an "in house" indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). 14 out of 5476 blood donors studied were PA reactive and were confirmed positive by IFA, showing a prevalence of 0.26% (95% confidence interval: 0.126%-0.394%). All the positive samples, except one, met the cri

Acquired ichthyosis in concomitant HIV-1 and HTLV-II infection: a new association with intravenous drug abuse.

BACKGROUND: Papulosquamous eruptions are common in HIV-1-infected patients. Acquired ichthyosis may occur after profound T-cell depletion. Intravenous drug users infected with HIV-1 can be coinfected with human lymphotropic virus II (HTLV-II). OBJECTIVE: We examined the relation between acquired ichthyosis and concomitant infection with HIV-1 and HTLV-II in intravenous drug users. METHODS: We examined 184 male and female HIV-1-positive intravenous drug users for acquired ichthyosis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to screen these patients for antibody to HTLV-I/II. Chromosome studies in HTLV-I, -II, and HIV-1, -2 cell lines infected in vivo and in vitro.

HTLV-I, II and HIV-1, 2 are T-cell tropic viruses, all belonging to the retrovirus family. These viruses are transmitted horizontally by intimate contact or through blood products. The study of chromosomal changes in these T cells may enhance our understanding of the nature and mechanism of these viral infections. However, because of the cytopathic effect of these viruses on T cells, the direct observation of abnormalities in these cells is sometimes difficult. We performed chromosomal analysis on six HTLV-I cell lines from patients with HTLV-I-positive leukemia/lymphoma, one HTLV-I variant ce

[Infection with HTLV virus type I-II in patients with cervico-uterine cancer in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico].

Southwestern Japan is an endemic zone with high prevalence of HTLV-I infection. In addition, a relation between cancer of the cervix and this retrovirus has been described. A recent study has demonstrated a low prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection in Yucatan, Mexico. However, cancer of the cervix is the most frequent oncological disease in this region. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between cancer of the cervix and the HTLV-I/II infection. Sera from 123 patients with cancer of the cervix and 662 healthy women were screened for antibodies against HTLV-I/II by ELISA a

Tropical spastic paraparesis-like illness occurring in a patient dually infected with HIV-1 and HTLV-II.

We describe a 34-year-old man from southern Florida with a history of intravenous drug use, dually infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II), who developed a myelopathy clinically indistinguishable from HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). This myelopathy was characterized by spastic lower extremity weakness, distal paresthesias, sensory loss with a discrete thoracic level to pinprick, back pain, impotence, and sphincter disturbances. Nerve conduction studies revealed an associated mixed axonal and

Prevalence of infection by HTLV-I/II among pregnant women and high-risk groups in the Peloponnese peninsula, Greece.

Although screening for human T-cell lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/II) antibodies in volunteer blood donors has been systematic in Greece since 1995, the epidemiology and the determinants of HTLV-I/II infection are not well defined among population groups. During 1997-2005, the prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection was investigated in a sample of 2016 pregnant women, 102 multitransfused haematologic and oncologic patients, 93 thalassaemic patients and 57 intravenous drug users originating from four geographic areas of Pelopennese peninsula, Greece. Phenotypic expression of integrin membrane receptors on spontaneously proliferating CD8 cells in human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II)-infected individuals.

Spontaneous lymphocyte proliferation in the absence of exogenous stimulators was examined in asymptomatic HTLV-II-seropositive (n = 12) and seronegative individuals (n = 16). Mean spontaneous lymphocytic proliferation significantly increased on day 8 postculture in HTLV-II-infected individuals (5762 +/- 899 cpm) compared with normal controls (2034 +/- 925 cpm, P less than 0.01). The proliferating cells in infected individuals were predominantly T cells; neither B cells nor monocytes demonstrated any proliferation. Syndrome of severe skin disease, eosinophilia, and dermatopathic lymphadenopathy in patients with HTLV-II complicating human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Two intravenous drug users dually infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and human T-cell leukemia virus type II (HTLV-II) developed an unusual severe dermatitis characterized by progressive brawny induration, fissuring, and ulceration of the skin, with an associated CD8 cell infiltration in one patient. Both patients had persistent eosinophilia. Lymph node biopsy revealed dermatopathic lymphadenopathy, an unusual pathologic finding in HIV-1 infection but one seen in association with mycosis fungoides and other skin disorders. HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-I/II and Treponema pallidum infections: incidence, prevalence, and HIV-2-associated mortality in an occupational cohort in Guinea-Bissau.

The prevalence and incidence of human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV-1, HIV-2), human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/II), and syphilitic infections and the association between these infections were determined in a cohort of police officers in Guinea-Bissau. Between January 1990 and December 1992, 1,384 subjects (1,241 men and 143 women) were included in the study; and of the first 879 tested, 561 were tested at least for a second time. The overall seroprevalence of HIV-1 was 0.4%, of HIV-2 11.6%, and of HTLV I/II 4.4%. Three individuals (0.2%) were seropositive for both

Retrovirus infections in a sample of injecting drug users in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil: prevalence of HIV-1 subtypes, and co-infection with HTLV-I/II.

BACKGROUND: Retrovirus infections among injecting drug users (IDUs), a core at-risk population for both HIV-1 and HTLV-I/II infections in Brazil, were assessed within an ongoing cooperative research. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the seroprevalences of HIV-1 and HTLV-I/II infections, as well as the prevalence of HIV-1 subtypes in a sample of IDUs from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An attempt to evaluate HIV incidence was carried out using a dual 'sensitive/less sensitive' testing strategy. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional evaluation of 175 IDUs. Delayed hypersensitivity skin testing to mumps and Candida albicans antigens is normal in middle-aged HTLV-I- and-II-infected U.S. cohorts.

It has been reported that human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I-infected persons in Japan have decreased delayed hypersensitivity skin test reactivity to tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD), but HTLV-I- or -II-infected persons do not generally develop opportunistic infections. We administered standardized intradermal testing with PPD, mumps, and Candida albicans antigens to 31 HTLV-I, 48 HTLV-II, and 143 seronegative subjects in the United States. Lack of evidence of HTLV-I/II infection in T CD8 malignant or reactive lymphoproliferative disorders in France: a serological and/or molecular study of 169 cases.

Human T lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II), originally isolated in 1982 from a patient with a "T hairy cell leukemia", has not yet been proven to be the causative agent of any specific hematological disease. In order to screen for such an event, and because HTLV-II has a preferential tropism for OKT8 (CD8) T cells (both in vivo and in vitro), we searched for the presence of HTLV-II in lymphoproliferative diseases (LP) of CD8+ T cells. We report a serological and/or molecular study of 169 patients with a T CD8 LP, including 76 patients with malignant or reactive T CD8 LP (34 lymphomas, 27 lar
