Pressure-Driven Polar Orthorhombic to Tetragonal Phase Transition in Hafnia at Room Temperature.

Oxides are legendary for their complex energy landscapes, sensitivity to external stimuli, and property control through chemical substitution. Of these, the binary oxide HfO2 is one of the most fascinating because of the extraordinary number competing phases and opportunities to stabilize unique and useful properties. In this work, we combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and first-principles calculations to explore the properties of polar orthorhombic hafnia (chemical formula HfO2:xY, where x = 12%) under pressure

Vanadia-Zirconia and Vanadia-Hafnia Catalysts for Utilization of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions.

Utilization is a sustainable and interesting alternative for the destructive treatment of volatile organic compounds due to avoided CO2 emission. This work concentrates on the development of active and sulfur-tolerant catalysts for the utilization of contaminated methanol. Impregnated and sol-gel prepared vanadia-zirconia and vanadia-hafnia catalysts were thoroughly characterized by N2 sorption, analytical (S)TEM, elemental analysis, XRD and Raman spectroscopy, and their performances were evaluated in formaldehyde production from methanol and methanethiol mixture. The results showed higher act

Hafnia alvei infection complicated by chorioamnionitis and septicemia: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Hafnia alvei (H. alvei) is an opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes extraintestinal infections. Chorioamnionitis involving this bacterium, though uncommon, can be life-threatening and rapidly progress to maternal septic shock. However, in the setting of polymicrobial infection-particularly when co-existing with Escherichia coli, a well-recognized pathogen in obstetric sepsis-the severe clinical manifestations cannot be attributed solely to H. alvei. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 27-year-old primipara at 33 + 5 weeks of gestation presenting with low-grade fever, lower abd

Natural antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and biochemical identification of Escherichia albertii and Hafnia alvei strains.

Bangladeshi diarrheagenic Hafnia alvei-like strains have been described recently as the new species Escherichia albertii (Int J Syst Evolut Microbiol. 2003;53:807-810). The natural susceptibility of 21 E. albertii and 76 H. alvei strains to 69 antimicrobial agents was examined, applying a microdilution procedure in IsoSensitest broth (for all the strains) and cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth (for some strains). Examining the phenotypic features of both taxa with commercial identification systems and conventional tests, a database for an accurate biochemical separation of E. albertii from H

Hafnia, an enterobacterial genus naturally resistant to colistin revealed by three susceptibility testing methods.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the susceptibility to colistin of Hafnia alvei and Hafnia paralvei, and to compare methods for colistin resistance detection in the Hafnia genus. METHODS: A collection of 25 Hafnia isolates was studied. Species were identified by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing with subsequent phylogeny analysis. Susceptibility to colistin was determined using the broth microdilution (BMD) reference method, the Phoenix automated system, the Rapid Polymyxin NP test, the Etest system and the disc diffusion method. RESULTS: The collection consisted of 15 H. alvei and 10 H. paralvei isola

Structural analysis of the lipid A isolated from Hafnia alvei 32 and PCM 1192 lipopolysaccharides.

Hafnia alvei, a Gram-negative bacterium, is an opportunistic pathogen associated with mixed hospital infections, bacteremia, septicemia, and respiratory diseases. The majority of clinical symptoms of diseases caused by this bacterium have a lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin)-related origin. The lipid A structure affects the biological activity of endotoxins predominantly. Thus, the structure of H. alvei lipid A was analyzed for the first time. The major form, asymmetrically hexa-acylated lipid A built of beta-D-GlcpN4P-(1-->6)-alpha-D-GlcpN1P substituted with (R)-14:0(3-OH) at N-2 and O-3, 14

Control of carbon dioxide in modified Mapleson A and D (Hafnia) anaesthetic systems. An experimental model.

The effects of varying ventilations (VE) and fresh gas flows (FGF) on end-expiratory CO2 (FECO2) levels were investigated in an experimental model lung, employing the Hafnia modification of the Mapleson A and D anaesthetic systems during CO2-absorption and CO2-wash-out (rebreathing). Identical results were found in both systems: FECO2 was constant and independent of FGF with CO2-absorption and constant VE, whereas rebreathing resulted in increasing FECO2 levels as FGF was decreased. As control of FECO2 in the rebreathing systems by regulating FGF could only take place within FECO2 levels highe

Clinical significance of extraintestinal Hafnia alvei isolates from 61 patients and review of the literature.

Hafnia alvei is a gram-negative bacterium that is rarely isolated from human specimens and is rarely considered to be pathogenic. It has been associated with gastroenteritis, meningitis, bacteremia, pneumonia, nosocomial wound infections, endophthalmitis, and a buttock abscess. We studied 80 H. alvei isolates recovered from 61 patients within a period of 30 months. H. alvei was cultured from sites that included the respiratory tract (n = 38), the gastrointestinal tract (n = 16), and the urogenital tract (n = 12); the organism was found in blood cultures (n = 8), on central venous catheters (n

Toward Nonvolatile Spin-Orbit Devices: Deposition of Ferroelectric Hafnia on Monolayer Graphene/Co/HM Stacks.

While technologically challenging, the integration of ferroelectric thin films with graphene spintronics potentially allows the realization of highly efficient, electrically tunable, nonvolatile memories through control of the interfacial spin-orbit driven interaction occurring at graphene/Co interfaces deposited on heavy metal supports. Here, the integration of ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 on graphene/Co/heavy metal epitaxial stacks is investigated via the implementation of several nucleation methods in atomic layer deposition. By employing in situ Al2O3 as a nucleation layer sandwiched between

An In-Silico Investigation to Design a Multi-Epitopes Vaccine against Multi-Drug Resistant Hafnia alvei.

Antimicrobial resistance has become a significant health issue because of the misuse of antibiotics in our daily lives, resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. Hafnia alvei is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative and facultative anaerobic bacteria. The medical community has emphasized H. alvei's possible association with gastroenteritis. As of now, there is no licensed vaccine for H. alvei, and as such, computer aided vaccine design approaches could be an ideal approach to highlight the potential vaccine epitopes against this bacteria. By using bacterial pan-genome analysis (BPGA), we were

Heterogeneity of AmpC cephalosporinases of Hafnia alvei clinical isolates expressing inducible or constitutive ceftazidime resistance phenotypes.

Ten unrelated Hafnia alvei clinical isolates were grouped according to either their low-level and inducible cephalosporinase production or their high-level and constitutive cephalosporinase production phenotype. Their AmpC sequences shared 85 to 100% amino acid identity. The immediate genetic environment of ampC genes was conserved in H. alvei isolates but was different from that found in other ampC-possessing enterobacterial species.

Characterisation of Hafnia alvei isolates from human clinical extra-intestinal specimens: haemagglutinins, serum resistance and siderophore synthesis.

Extra-intestinal Hafnia alvei isolates are rarely considered to be pathogenic. To investigate whether such strains are able to produce virulence factors, a total of 70 clinical H. alvei isolates was compared with clinical extra-intestinal isolates of other members of the enterobacterial tribe Klebsiellae (Kiebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens). Whereas mannose-sensitive haemagglutination (MSHA) was less common in H. alvei (59%) than in K. pneumoniae (86%) and E. cloacae (89%) isolates, the incidences of mannose-resistant haemagglutination indicative of type 3 pili (M

Isolation of Hafnia alvei from bronchoalveolar lavage of an immunocompetent host presenting with cavitating pneumonia: Contaminant or Causative?

INTRODUCTION: Hafnia alvei is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacillus that is most often found as an enteric commensal. It is seldom considered to be pathogenic in immunocompetent individuals. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 23-year-old, previously healthy male, who presented to the emergency department with a two-day history of hemoptysis, mild dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, fevers, and chills. Bloods revealed leukocytosis and elevated C-reactive protein. Chest X-ray and CT of the thorax revealed a cavitating lesion in the right upper lobe. He was commenced on empiric antibiotic

Melanocortin Receptor Signaling Modulates Anti-Obesity and Glucose Tolerance Effects of Hafnia alvei 4597 Probiotic Strain in Mice.

The present study aimed to elucidate whether the metabolic effects of the probiotic bacterium Hafnia alvei 4597 depend on melanocortin receptor (MCR) signaling. The response to a 3-week intragastric treatment with the H. alvei bacterial suspension or total protein extract was compared between genetically similar mouse sub-strains but with different MCR sensitivity: KK and KK.Cg-Ay/a (KK-Ay)-the latter overproducing Agouti protein. Treatment of KK mice with H. alvei protein extract stimulated energy expenditure and carbohydrate oxidation but reduced lipid oxidation, leptin level, pancreatic wei
