Natural Products in Hemorrhoid Management: A Comprehensive Literature Review of Traditional Herbal Remedies and Evidence-Based Therapies.

Hemorrhoids are an anorectal problem that is prevalent and commonly managed with corticosteroids, analgesics, and phlebotonics. These conventional treatments are, however, only temporary in serving relief and come with adverse side effects when used long-term. Alternative herbal remedies, created from traditional medicine with all the evidence of their pharmacological action, promise good results. The effectiveness of various botanicals with the potential of being anti-inflammatory, venotonic, astringent, antioxidant, and wound healing in alleviating hemorrhoidal symptoms is discussed in this

Protective activity of hamamelitannin on cell damage induced by superoxide anion radicals in murine dermal fibroblasts.

Previously we demonstrated that hamamelitannin (2',5-di-O-galloyl hamamelose) in Hamamelis virginiana L. exhibits potent superoxide-anion scavenging activity. We then examined the physiological and pharmacological activities of hamamelitannin as well as its functional homologues, gallic acid and syringic acid. The following results were obtained: (1) Hamamelitannin has a higher protective activity against cell damages induced by superoxide anions than gallic acid which is the functional moiety of hamamelitannin. The protective activity of hamamelitannin on murine fibroblast-damage induced by s

The infantile visceral leishmaniasis: could it attack Egyptian north coastal region again?

Visceral leishmaniasis is caused by three species of the L. donovani complex: L. donovani, L. infantum, and L. chagasi. Infections with these organisms are often asymptomatic or very mild, but in a minority of individuals there is progression to severe symptomatic disease. This is associated with spread of the infection throughout the reticuloendothelial system. L. infantum typically affect children below the age of 5 years. However, IVL can also occur in immunosuppressed adults, such as transplant recipients and patients receiving immunosuppressive chemotherapy or patients suffering from chro

Cosmetics and herbal remedies with Compositae plant extracts - are they tolerated by Compositae-allergic patients?

BACKGROUND: Compositae-sensitive patients are routinely warned against topical use of Compositae-containing cosmetics and herbal remedies. However, the risk of elicitation of dermatitis in presensitized persons is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this study was to assess the significance of direct plant allergen contact via Compositae-derived cosmetics and herbal remedies in Compositae-allergic patients with special reference to arnica (Arnica montana) and German chamomile (Chamomilla recutita). METHODS: 8 of 12 chamomile-sensitive patients tested positive to chamomile-containing prepara

Rapidly evolving aphid gall effector proteins exhibit saposin-like folds.

Many insects manipulate plants by injecting effector proteins. In one extreme example of this molecular "hijacking," Hormaphis cornu aphids inject bicycle proteins into Hamamelis virginiana, contributing to the development of novel organs called galls. Bicycle proteins share no amino acid sequence similarity with proteins of known function. Here, we report the crystal structures of two divergent bicycle proteins. Both proteins contain saposin-like folds: one with multiple disulfide bonds exhibits a swapped domain topology; the other has no disulfide bonds and possesses two distinct, tandem dom

Lip mesotherapy with dexpanthenol in the treatment of isotretinoin-induced cheilitis.

INTRODUCTION: Cheilitis is the most common mucocutaneous side effect of isotretinoin (ISO). Dexpanthenol (DXP) increases fibroblast proliferation and re-epithelialization in wound healing. We aimed to investigate the effect of DXP-mesotherapy in ISO-induced cheilitis in this study. METHODS: This study was conducted on patients who had been using ISO (0.5-1 mg/kg/day) for at least 2 months. Twenty-five patients who administered DXP-mesotherapy (mesotherapy group) and 33 patients without the procedure (control group, only ointment) participated in this study. All patients were prescribed only h

[Evidence-based cosmetics: concepts and applications in photoaging of the skin and xerosis].

As well as for topically used dermatological agents, studies performed according to the rules of evidence-based medicine (EBM) are also needed for cosmetics. Although the concept of evidence-based cosmetics has been only partly developed so far, there are some agents and preparations available that can be considered as evidence-based. In this paper we present data from several studies that claim to have examined and demonstrated the efficacy of cosmetic preparations for the management of solar damage and aging skin as well as lentigo and melanosis according to EBM criteria. Certainly, further

Screening North American plant extracts in vitro against Trypanosoma brucei for discovery of new antitrypanosomal drug leads.

BACKGROUND: Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a protozoan parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei. The disease is endemic in regions of sub-Saharan Africa, covering 36 countries and more than 60 million people at the risk. Only few drugs are available for the treatment of HAT. Current drugs suffer from severe toxicities and require intramuscular or intravenous administrations. The situation is further aggravated due to the emergence of drug resistance. There is an urgent need of new drugs that are effective orally against both stages of HAT. Natural products offer an unmatched sour
