BACKGROUND: The reason for the higher incidence of anterior cruciate ligament injury from non-contact mechanisms in female athletes is not known. Stability of the joint from dynamic restraints occurs through proprioceptive and kinaesthetic mechanisms providing a flexion moment. Reflexive muscle activation is different between the sexes, but it is unclear if sex differences exist in the ability to dynamically stabilise joints through a neuromuscular feed forward process as measured by preactivation of the muscles.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the level of preactivation of the gastrocnemius and h

INTRODUCTION: Muscle fatigue is considered a risk factor for hamstring injury (HSI), which occurs during high-speed running. To decrease this risk, higher gluteal muscle activity may have a role to play. This study aimed to compare the muscle activities of the gluteus maximus (GMax) and hamstring (HS) muscles between HSI-experienced and inexperienced people in pre- and post-fatigue conditions during the swing and stance phases of running.
METHODS: Participants were asked to run 13 sets of 20 km/h on the treadmill. GMax and HS muscle activities of the (i) injured and (ii) uninjured legs in the

The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) and high-speed running are widely used training modalities to prevent hamstring strain injuries, yet the differences in the muscle lengths, forces, power, work, and impulse between these training modalities remain unclear. Thus, in this study, we compared model-estimated dynamics of the most frequently injured hamstrings muscle, biceps femoris long head (BFLH), for 14 participants (8 male and 6 female) performing the NHE and running between 4 and 8 m/s. We collected motion capture data to drive musculoskeletal simulations to estimate muscle fiber lengths and

Meniscal lesions are among the most common knee injuries and substantially affect the mechanical function of the knee joint. In addition, the presence of mechanoreceptors in the meniscus suggests that the menisci are also involved in the sensorimotor control of the knee. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of an isolated meniscal lesion on the reflex behaviour of the hamstring muscles, which are involved in the sensorimotor control of the knee joint. For this purpose, we mechanically induced tibial translation in 19 patients in a standing position and analysed the biph

Regional differences in the passive mechanical properties of the hamstring muscles remain unclear. Previous studies using isolated muscle-tendon units have reported inconsistent findings regarding whether proximal or distal regions exhibit greater stiffness. These discrepancies may arise from differences between isolated specimens and in situ anatomical conditions. Therefore, this study investigated regional variations in the mechanical properties of individual hamstring muscles under different joint positions and tissue conditions. Six lower limbs from Thiel-embalmed cadavers were examined. T

Of the hamstring muscle group the biceps femoris muscle is the most commonly injured muscle in sports requiring interval sprinting. The reason for this observation is unknown. The objective of this study was to calculate the forces of all three hamstring muscles, relative to each other, during a lengthening contraction to assess for any differences that may help explain the biceps femoris predilection for injury during interval sprinting. To calculate the displacement of each individual hamstring muscle previously performed studies on cadaveric anatomical data and hamstring kinematics during s

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe hamstring muscle injury (HMI) history and hamstring specific training (HST) in elite athletes. A secondary aim was to analyse the potential factors associated with in-championships HMI.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study to collect data before and during the 2018 European Athletics Championships. Injury and illness complaints during the month before the championship, HMI history during the entire career and the 2017-18 season, HST (strengthening, stretching, core stability, sprinting), and in-championship HMI were recorded. We calculated proportio

Hamstring injuries are very common in sports medicine. Knowing their anatomy, morphology, innervation, and function is important to provide a proper diagnosis, treatment as well as appropriate prevention strategies. In this pictorial essay, based on anatomical dissection, the detailed anatomy of muscle-tendon complex is reviewed, including their proximal attachment, muscle course, and innervation. To illustrate hamstrings' role in the rotational control of the tibia, the essay also includes the analysis of their biomechanical function.Level of evidence V (expert opinion based on laboratory stu

PURPOSE: Passive muscle tension is increased after damaging eccentric exercise. Hamstring-strain injury is associated with damaging eccentric muscle actions, but no research has examined changes in hamstring passive muscle tension throughout a simulated sport activity. The authors measured hamstring passive tension throughout a 90-min simulated soccer match (SAFT90), including the warm-up period and every 15 min throughout the 90-min simulation.
METHODS: Passive hamstring tension of 15 amateur male soccer players was measured using the instrumented straight-leg-raise test. Absolute torque (Nm

BACKGROUND: Partial tears of the hamstring muscle origin represent a challenging clinical problem to the patient and orthopaedic surgeon. Although nonoperative treatment is frequently met with limited success, there is a paucity of data on the efficacy of surgical management for partial proximal hamstring tears in the active and athletic population.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of an anatomic repair for partial tears of the hamstring muscle origin in athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: The records of 17 patients with partial tears of the proximal hamstrin

The mechanisms underlying cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in dogs are poorly understood. In this study hamstring muscle reflexes in response to cranial tibial translation were analysed to determine whether these active stabilisers of the stifle joint are differently activated in dogs with CCLR compared to control dogs. In a prospective clinical study reflex muscle activity from the lateral and medial hamstring muscles (biceps femoris and semimembranosus) was recorded using surface electrodes in control dogs (n=21) and dogs with CCLR (n=22). These electromyographic recordings were anal

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to characterize hamstring muscle kinematics during sprinting, so as to provide scientific data to better understand injury mechanisms and differences in injury rates between muscles.
METHODS: We conducted three-dimensional motion analyses of 14 athletes performing treadmill sprinting at speeds ranging from 80 to 100% of maximum. Scaled musculoskeletal models were used to estimate hamstring muscle-tendon lengths throughout the sprinting gait cycle for each speed. We tested the hypothesis that the biceps femoris (BF) long head would be stret

Acute muscle belly injuries to the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris (the 'hamstring' muscles) remain a common problem in the sporting population. Physiotherapy-led rehabilitation remains the mainstay of treatment, and the physician's input is often minimal. Anecdotally, many different topical, oral and injectable therapies are used around the world in an effort to accelerate the healing of these injuries and to prevent their recurrence. This article reviews the evidence available to support some of the most commonly used medical therapies and the pathophysiological basis for

Hamstring strains are common injuries, the majority of which occur whilst sprinting. An understanding of the biomechanical circumstances that cause the hamstrings to fail during sprinting is required to improve rehabilitation specificity. The aim of this study was to therefore investigate the biomechanics of an acute hamstring strain. Bilateral kinematic and ground reaction force data were captured from a sprinting athlete prior to and immediately following a right hamstring strain. Ten sprinting trials were collected: nine normal (pre-injury) trials and one injury trial. Joint angles, torques

Past research on hamstring strains indicated an imbalance in leg strength as a cause of hamstring strains. No theory has been put forth to explain why the strength imbalance would cause strain. Investigation on cadavers of the muscular attachment of the short head of the biceps femoris indicated the varied attachment of this muscle to the linea aspera. It is theorized that an extensive attachment to the linea aspara and a strength imbalance would cause hamstring strains.

The sacrotuberous ligament (STL) and the hamstrings are important structures that are mutually connected and influenced by the pelvis. However, the anatomical connectivity and histological characteristics of these structures remain unclear. The present study aimed to comprehensively investigate the relationship between the STL and the proximal hamstrings through histological analysis. Sixteen specimens were obtained from eight fresh cadavers (mean age at death, 73.4 years). Verhoeff Van Gieson, Masson's trichrome, and immunohistochemical staining were used to analyze the connectivity between t

There is some evidence that hamstring function can be influenced by interventions focusing on the pelvis via an anatomic and neurophysiologic link between these two segments. Previous research demonstrated increased electromyographic activity from injured hamstrings during transition from bipedal to unipedal stance (BUS). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a pelvic compression belt (PCB) on electromyographic activity of selected muscles during BUS in sportsmen with and without hamstring injury. Electromyographic amplitudes (normalised to maximum voluntary isometric contrac

CONTEXT: Hamstring muscle strain is a common sports injury associated with significant time loss and high recurrence rates among athletes. Eccentric exercises, particularly the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE), are effective in reducing injury incidence, yet their morphological adaptations remain underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To examine exercise-induced morphological adaptations of the hamstring muscles and to provide an integrated perspective on changes in muscle architecture and size.
DATA SOURCES: In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA
