Hantaviruses are rodent/insectivore-borne negative-stranded RNA viruses which belong to the Bunyaviridae family. They do not cause any symptomatic disease in their adult carrier rodents, but in humans they are aetiologic agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), both associated with a significant mortality. In cell culture hantaviruses do not cause cytopathic effects and the mechanisms of disease in man are not well understood. Increased capillary permeability is a central phenomenon in the pathogenesis of hantavirus infections. Although t

Hantaviruses are increasingly regarded as an important emerging risk to global health, with an estimated annual impact on more than 200000 people worldwide. These pathogens are single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the family Han taviridae and are known to cause two major clinical syndromes in humans: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). The so-called old world hantaviruses, which are associated with HFRS, are predominantly distributed across Asia, Europe, and parts of Africa. In contrast, new world hantaviruses, responsible for HPS, are larg

Hantaviruses are emerging zoonoses hosted by small mammals. In humans, they cause two diseases. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is mainly caused by Dobrava-Belgrade virus, Puumala virus, Seoul virus and Hantaan virus in Asia and Europe. On the other hand, the most important causes of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome are Sin Nombre virus and Andes virus in Americas. Ribavirin yet remains the only licensed drug against the hantavirus infections, but its sufficient antiviral activity remains an issue under discussion. There are still no available vaccines against hantaviruses except of s

A serological survey for the prevalence of hantavirus infections in The Netherlands was carried out on > 10,000 sera, from selected human populations, and different feral and domestic animal species. Hantavirus-specific antibodies were found in about 1% of patients suspected of acute leptospirosis, 10% of patients with acute nephropathia, and in less than 0.1% haemodialysis and renal transplant patients. Among individuals with a suspected occupational risk, 6% of animal trappers, 4% of forestry workers, 2% of laboratory workers and 0.4% of farmers were seropositive. The majority of the seropos

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the diagnosis and treatment of indigenous new world hantavirus infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have defined the incubation period of new world hantavirus infections, provided additional evidence for person-to-person transmission of Andes virus, described a rapid method for the presumptive diagnosis of infection in the cardiopulmonary phase through a review of the peripheral smear, and suggested that intravenous ribavirin is probably not effective for the treatment of new world hantavirus

Hantavirus activity in rodents and human beings in Argentina has been known since the 1980's. In this study, we retrospectively investigated hantavirus infections among Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF) cases notified between 1987 and 1994, without virological confirmation. IgG and IgM antibodies to hantavirus were tested by ELISA. Among 1028 patients included in the study, we found 13 recent infections (1.26%) and 13 remote infections (1.26%). IgG antibodies determined in 745 healthy persons living in the same localities of recent infection cases, gave only one positive result (0.13%). Nine o

Rodent-borne hantaviruses (family Bunyaviridae, genus Hantavirus) cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Americas and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Europe and Asia. The viruses are transmitted to humans mainly by inhalation of virus-contaminated aerosols of rodent excreta and secreta. Classic clinical hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome occurs in five phases: fever, hypotension, oliguria, polyuria, and convalescence. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a severe acute disease that is associated with respiratory failure, pulmonary edema and cardiogenic shock. The diagnosis of hanta

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that belong to the Hantavirus genus of the family Bunyaviridae. These viruses persistently infect their rodent reservoirs without causing disease. The virus is transmitted to humans via the inhalation of infectious aerosols generated from contaminated animal secretions or through the contaminated saliva of animal bites. Hantaviruses cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Euro-Asia, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in North and South America. Here, we review the epidemiology and epizootiology of hantavirus infection in Asian countries.

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice were inoculated with Hantaan virus strain 76-118 (HTN) or Seoul virus strain SR-11 (SR) of hantaviruses. Susceptibility of SCID mice was compared with those of immunocompetent adult mice, newborn mice and nude mice. SCID mice inoculated with HTN or SR died 32 to 35 days after infection. Unlike newborn mice which also died of hantavirus infection, SCID mice survived longer than newborn mice and showed typical wasting symptoms rather than nervous symptoms. Immunohistochemical staining and virus isolation indicated that both HTN and SR inoculated SCID

There are two categories of hantaviruses resulting in two distinct illnesses. The Old World (Asia and Europe) viruses give rise to hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), and the New World (Americas) viruses cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Hantavirus infections have very similar clinical pictures and epidemiology to leptospirosis. Here, we present two cases of hantavirus infections from Sri Lanka (in South Asia) initially misdiagnosed as leptospirosis and later further investigated and diagnosed as hantavirus infections with serological confirmation of the diagnosis. They had

Tick-borne infections are endemic in Switzerland with borreliosis being the most frequent one, followed by the vaccine-preventable tick-borne encephalitis and more rarely by anaplasmosis, rickettsioses and babesiosis. Short characteristics of these infections are presented. The main preventive measures for stays in endemic regions include not leaving forest tracks and wearing closely fitted clothes and shoes, impregnated with an insecticide. Following at-risk activities, clothes as well as the body should be searched for ticks and they have to be removed using a tick removing tool. The body ar

Several arenaviruses and hantaviruses have been isolated in the Americas during the last 4 decades. These are rodent-borne viruses responsible for the South American hemorrhagic fevers (SAHF) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Although rare, SAHF and HPS are serious illnesses with high mortality rates. Most viral isolates found in the Americas represent New World lineages of their respective viral families. Their presence in the Western hemisphere is likely ancient, their relationship with their rodent hosts is likely coevolutionary, and their recent detection forebodes the likelihood of

Hantaviruses chronically infect rodents without apparent disease, but when they are spread by aerosolized excreta to humans, two major clinical syndromes result: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Both diseases appear to be immunopathologic, and inflammatory mediators are important in causing the clinical manifestations. In HPS, T cells act on heavily infected pulmonary endothelium, and it is suspected that gamma interferon and tumor necrosis factor are major agents of a reversible increase in vascular permeability that leads to severe, noncar

The clinical outcome of Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) infection shows extensive variation, ranging from inapparent subclinical infection (70-80%) to severe hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), with about 0.1% of cases being fatal. Most hospitalized patients experience acute kidney injury (AKI), histologically known as acute hemorrhagic tubulointerstitial nephritis. Why this variation? There is no evidence that there would be more virulent and less virulent variants infecting humans, although this has not been extensively studied. Individuals with the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses can cause serious human diseases including hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS). European Hantavirus are usually associated with HFRS, and their geographical distribution mirrors the ecology of reservoir host species. Epidemiology of HFRS is well-studied in Western Europe, but data from Italy are fragmentary.
METHODS: We searched into two different databases (PubMed and EMBASE), focusing on studies reporting the prevalence of Hantaviruses in Italy. Data were extracted using a standardized assessment form, and resu

In humans, hantaviruses can cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). Currently it is estimated that 150,000 to 200,000 cases of hantavirus disease occur each year, the majority being reported in Asia. However, human hantavirus infections are increasingly reported in the Americas and Europe. Although many of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms still remain unclear, recent evidence rather argues against a purely immune-mediated pathophysiology of human disease. Despite the high morbidity and case-fatality rates of HFRS and HCPS, respecti

To determine the extent of hantavirus infection in Singapore, serological studies using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test were conducted on commensal rodents and on human patients in 4 diagnostic groups. Virus isolation using a Vero E6 cell line was performed on hantaviral antigen-positive rodent lung tissue. Of 142 rodents and 3 insectivores studied, 37 (26%) were seropositive for IFA. Rattus norvegicus was the predominant species captured, with the highest species-specific seropositive rate of 32% (36 of 113). A hantavirus strain, R36, was isolated from one R. norvegicus. Se

IMPORTANCE: Hantaviruses have caused several recent human disease outbreaks. They carry a high mortality rate, and some species can spread from person to person although they are typically spread from rodents to humans. Neurological complications have been documented but are poorly understood.
OBSERVATIONS: Broadly, 2 types of syndromes have been associated with hantaviruses. The pulmonary syndrome carries a high mortality rate and can result in pulmonary and cardiac failure. Neurological involvement is typically secondary to hypoxic and ischemic injury or metabolic dysfunction. Another manif

Hantavirus infection is a rodent-borne zoonotic disease that can present as Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) or Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS). Both diseases are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The rise of new Hantavirus species and recurrent outbreaks worldwide has renewed interest in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of this viral infection. A narrative literature review was conducted using published articles, review papers, epidemiological reports, and clinical studies on Hantavirus up to 2026. Relevant evidence regarding
