FlexHapComm: A Flexible Wearable Haptic Interface with Dynamically Programmable Shape-Morphing Patterns Enabling Bidirectional Communication.

Haptic feedback with bidirectional communication can effectively enhance the realism and immersion in human-machine interaction. In this work, we propose the FlexHapComm interface, a flexible wearable haptic communication interface that functions as an electronic-skin system. It enables dynamically programmable shape-morphing haptic feedback patterns and supports real-time bidirectional haptic interaction by cointegrating actuation and sensing units. The interface designs an array of hydraulic amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators, each with a diameter of 8 mm and capable of g

HaptGlove-Untethered Pneumatic Glove for Multimode Haptic Feedback in Reality-Virtuality Continuum.

Novel haptics technologies are urgently needed to bridge the gap between entirely physical world and fully digital environment to render a more realistic and immersive human-computer interaction. Current virtual reality (VR) haptic gloves either deliver limited haptic feedback or are bulky and heavy. The authors develop a haptic glove or HaptGlove, an untethered and lightweight pneumatic glove, that allows users to "physically" interact in a VR environment and enables both kinesthetic and cutaneous sensations naturally and realistically. Integrated with five pairs of haptic feedback modules an

Distally-referred surface electrical nerve stimulation (DR-SENS) for haptic feedback.

Objective. This study's objective is to understand distally-referred surface electrical nerve stimulation (DR-SENS) and evaluates the effects of electrode placement, polarity, and stimulation intensity on the location of elicited sensations in non-disabled individuals.Approach.A two-phased human experiment was used to characterize DR-SENS. In Experiment One, we explored 182 electrode combinations to identify a subset of electrode position combinations that would be most likely to elicit distally-referred sensations isolated to the index finger without discomfort. In Experiment Two, we further e

Haptic Tracing: A New Paradigm for Spatialized Vibrotactile Haptic Rendering.

Haptic technology enhances interactive experiences by providing force and tactile feedback, improving user performance and immersion. However, despite advancements, creating tactile experiences still remains challenging due to device diversity and complexity. Most available haptic frameworks rely on trigger-based or event-based systems, and disregard the 3D scene information to render haptic information. This paper introduces Haptic Tracing, a novel method for spatial tactile haptic rendering that simplifies the creation of interactive haptic experiences without relying on physical simulations

Virtual Reality Mediated Haptic Robot Telemanipulation Without Cameras: Technology and Pilot Study.

Robot telemanipulation is widely used to maintain effective robotic control by keeping a human operator in the loop. Traditional camera-based systems have achieved remarkable success, but they can fail under challenging conditions such as poor lighting, smoke, haze, or occlusions. This work introduces an alternative approach and demonstrates the feasibility of precise pick-and-place telemanipulation in the most extreme scenario: operating without any cameras or any other real-world visual input. Our system relies solely on tactile-driven 3D object reconstruction streamed to a Virtual Reality (

Design, Analysis, and Characterization of a Small-Scale High-Torque Magnetorheological Brake for Haptic Applications.

Achieving both high torque for convincing kinesthetic feedback and a compact form factor for user comfort in magnetorheological (MR) actuators remains challenging due to the rapid degradation of torque with reduced dimensions. To address this limitation, a small-scale, high-torque MR brake with a novel dual multi-drum configuration is proposed for haptic applications. In this configuration, two identical multi-gap MR shear regions are located on both sides of an electromagnetic coil. Once an excitation is applied, the MR shear regions are simultaneously activated, effectively maximizing active

A Novel Pipeline for Object Recognition Utilising Multi-Sensory Tactile Fusion.

Conventional visual-based object recognition is subject to many variables which may cause degradation, such as improper illumination and occlusion. Tactile sensing-based object recognition can assist in situations where these issues occur, enabling a system to exploit features that standard visual systems cannot identify. Tactile sensing-based object recognition involves the gathering and processing of physical features related to the interaction between a tactile sensing system such as a robot, and a physical object. This work proposes a novel object recognition pipeline driven by a multi-sen

A Large-Area Broadband Multimodal Dual-Resonant Haptic Device for Bidirectional Telerobotic and Augmented Interactions.

Bidirectional haptic systems demand interfaces that combine sensing and actuation, enabling concurrent detection of tactile inputs and delivery of perceptually rich feedback across a broad frequency spectrum. However, most existing haptic technologies remain limited to simple tactile sensing or narrowband feedback, struggling to resolve continuous motions and simultaneous sensory cues required for naturalistic human-machine interaction (HMI). These limitations fundamentally constrain the fidelity and expressiveness of tactile communication, preventing current human-machine interfaces from repr

A Low Voltage-Powered Flexible Electroosmotic Actuator for Wearable Haptics.

Wearable haptic actuators are important to provide users with tactile feedback to enhance immersive human-machine interaction. Most of the existing actuators, although soft and small, typically work at a high voltage of kilovolt level, which brings about safety risks for users. In this work, via functional group modification on a piece of glass fiber membranes, we construct a flexible electroosmotic actuator that can operate at a voltage as low as 20 volts, falling at the safe voltage for the human body. The actuator delivers feedback forces exceeding the tactile perception threshold of human

Transforming static interfaces into tactile channels with steerable transdermal foci.

Grasping objects such as handles, mice, and phones plays a central role in human-machine interaction, yet the contact surfaces of the hand, despite their exquisite tactile sensitivity, are rarely exploited as channels for information transfer. Here, we introduce transdermal all-directional targeting (TADT), a static-contact interface design strategy that converts passive grip surfaces into active tactile displays, allowing users to grasp stably while receiving spatially and temporally evolving information on the fingertips. TADT enhances sub-actuator-pitch energy delivery by integrating a micr

Compelling People to Move: Recent Progress in Haptic Technologies for Human Motion Induction in IEEE Transactions on Haptics.

Inducing human motion through haptic feedback is a long-standing objective in haptics research. Traditionally, such interaction has relied on mechanical systems that physically apply forces to the body using motors, linkages, or grounded devices. However, recent studies published in IEEE Transactions on Haptics have increasingly explored alternative approaches that evoke force or motion perception through relatively small physical stimuli. These techniques leverage perceptual characteristics of the human sensorimotor system to create compelling sensations of pulling, torque, or movement withou

Spatio-Temporal Control of Vibrotactile Stimulation on OLED Displays With Inverse Filtering.

This work presents an inverse filter method capable of controlling complex and independent haptic stimulations for up to ten fingers interacting concurrently with a display. Our approach extends the inverse filtering framework to support continuous operation, enabling real-time streaming of multitouch vibrotactile signals while accounting for finger motion. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis that establishes the relationship between key design parameters-such as actuator count, display mechanical properties, and finger configuration-and system performance metrics, including vibrat

The glove incorporates interchangeable thimbles for fingertip or phalanx attachment and a bidirectional tendon transmission that supports both passive and active feedback. It is combined with a modular actuation design, where different fee

Scalable networks of multimodal haptic arrays for plantar sensory substitution.

Feet provide essential sensory input, supporting body awareness for safe movement. The impairment of plantar sensation, arising in conditions such as stroke and spinal cord injury, has a major impact on mobility, balance, and quality of life. Substituting the sensation of plantar pressure to another area on the body with intact somatosensory abilities requires capabilities for fast, programmable delivery of haptic feedback. Here, we introduce a wireless network of skin-conformable, multimodal haptic arrays that deliver high-density thermal and vibrotactile patterns anywhere on the body. Centra

FingerWrap: A High-Density Finger-Enveloping Tactile Display.

Touch enables humans to recognize the location, motion, shape, and properties of contacted objects in the real world through mechanoreceptors distributed widely across the skin. However, existing tactile displays typically stimulate only the ventral surfaces of the fingers and hands, limiting the range and richness of touch-based interactions in interactive systems. Here, we present FingerWrap, a high-density pneumatic pin-array display that wraps around the finger and activates the widely distributed mechanoreceptors. FingerWrap uses 337 pins arranged at 13 pins/cm$^{2}$, which cover the vent

Are the "visual haptics" conferred via robotics non-inferior to actual haptics?

BACKGROUND: Critics often cite the lack of tactile feel as a major drawback of robotic surgery. Although robotic surgeons are believed to develop a sense of "visual haptics" through personal experience combined with the enhanced 3D vision, this phenomenon has not been formally scrutinized. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether surgeons' discernment of objects' physical properties using robotic technology was non-inferior to discernment via surgeons' hands. METHODS: This was a non-randomized parallel group study using an inanimate model consisting of four identical balloons fixed t

Sensitivity at the Edges of the Finger Enables Mixed Reality Force Feedback.

We introduce a new paradigm for rendering high-force sensations by stimulating the edges of the fingerpad rather than the central contact surface. This non-blocking approach preserves natural finger use, enabling simultaneous physical and virtual interactions. To investigate its feasibility, we proposed a mechanotransduction mechanism and conducted biomechanical and psychophysical studies. Our results show that the fingerpad edges are nearly as sensitive as the center under low forces, become roughly 117% more sensitive under moderate forces, and maintain sensitivity at higher forces. The edge
