Not a matter of shape: The influence of tool characteristics on electrodermal activity in response to haptic exploration of Lower Palaeolithic tools.

OBJECTIVES: Haptics involves somatosensory perception through the skin surface and dynamic touch based on the proprioceptive response of the whole body. Handling Palaeolithic stone tools influences the arousal and attentional engagement, which can be detected and measured through electrodermal activity. Although tool shape has generally been studied to consider tool functions or tool making, it is also a major factor in tool sensing and haptic perception. The purpose of this survey is to analyze whether the electrodermal reactions are influenced by stone tool morphology. METHODS: We first qua

A Large-Area Broadband Multimodal Dual-Resonant Haptic Device for Bidirectional Telerobotic and Augmented Interactions.

Bidirectional haptic systems demand interfaces that combine sensing and actuation, enabling concurrent detection of tactile inputs and delivery of perceptually rich feedback across a broad frequency spectrum. However, most existing haptic technologies remain limited to simple tactile sensing or narrowband feedback, struggling to resolve continuous motions and simultaneous sensory cues required for naturalistic human-machine interaction (HMI). These limitations fundamentally constrain the fidelity and expressiveness of tactile communication, preventing current human-machine interfaces from repr

Spatio-Temporal Control of Vibrotactile Stimulation on OLED Displays With Inverse Filtering.

This work presents an inverse filter method capable of controlling complex and independent haptic stimulations for up to ten fingers interacting concurrently with a display. Our approach extends the inverse filtering framework to support continuous operation, enabling real-time streaming of multitouch vibrotactile signals while accounting for finger motion. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis that establishes the relationship between key design parameters-such as actuator count, display mechanical properties, and finger configuration-and system performance metrics, including vibrat

KinesCeTI: A Modular and Size-Adaptable Force Feedback Glove With Interchangeable Actuation for the Index and Thumb.

Force feedback gloves in haptic applications remain constrained by limited adaptability, simplified feedback, and fixed architectures that limit force feedback versatility. To address these challenges, we present KinesCeTI, a modular force feedback exoskeleton for the index and thumb, designed as a multipurpose device adaptable to a wide range of hand sizes. The glove incorporates interchangeable thimbles for fingertip or phalanx attachment and a bidirectional tendon transmission that supports both passive and active feedback. It is combined with a modular actuation design, where different fee

FingerWrap: A High-Density Finger-Enveloping Tactile Display.

Touch enables humans to recognize the location, motion, shape, and properties of contacted objects in the real world through mechanoreceptors distributed widely across the skin. However, existing tactile displays typically stimulate only the ventral surfaces of the fingers and hands, limiting the range and richness of touch-based interactions in interactive systems. Here, we present FingerWrap, a high-density pneumatic pin-array display that wraps around the finger and activates the widely distributed mechanoreceptors. FingerWrap uses 337 pins arranged at 13 pins/cm$^{2}$, which cover the vent

Sensitivity at the Edges of the Finger Enables Mixed Reality Force Feedback.

We introduce a new paradigm for rendering high-force sensations by stimulating the edges of the fingerpad rather than the central contact surface. This non-blocking approach preserves natural finger use, enabling simultaneous physical and virtual interactions. To investigate its feasibility, we proposed a mechanotransduction mechanism and conducted biomechanical and psychophysical studies. Our results show that the fingerpad edges are nearly as sensitive as the center under low forces, become roughly 117% more sensitive under moderate forces, and maintain sensitivity at higher forces. The edge

Propeller-Based Handheld Force-Feedback Device for Navigation.

This article presents an evaluation of CrazyJoystick, a propeller-based handheld force-feedback device, for spatial navigation tasks in real-world and virtual reality environments. Building upon prior work validating the device's on-demand aerial deployment and directional cue discriminability, we investigated whether propeller-based kinesthetic torque cues can support effective wayfinding during continuous locomotion. We developed navigation-specific algorithms that generate egocentric directional cues using hierarchical decision logic optimized for dynamic heading corrections. Two user studi

Haptic Tracing: A New Paradigm for Spatialized Vibrotactile Haptic Rendering.

Haptic technology enhances interactive experiences by providing force and tactile feedback, improving user performance and immersion. However, despite advancements, creating tactile experiences still remains challenging due to device diversity and complexity. Most available haptic frameworks rely on trigger-based or event-based systems, and disregard the 3D scene information to render haptic information. This paper introduces Haptic Tracing, a novel method for spatial tactile haptic rendering that simplifies the creation of interactive haptic experiences without relying on physical simulations

A Shared Control Approach to Robot-Assisted Cataract Surgery Training for Novice Surgeons.

This paper proposes a novel virtual-fixtures-based shared control concept for eye surgery systems focusing on cataract procedures, one of the most common ophthalmic surgeries. Current research on haptic force feedback aims to enhance manipulation capabilities by integrating teleoperated medical robots. Our proposed concept utilizes teleoperated medical robots to improve the training of young surgeons by providing haptic feedback during cataract operations based on geometrical virtual fixtures. The core novelty of our concept is the active guidance to the incision point generated directly from

Horizontal Plane Haptic Redirection: Realizing Haptic Feedback for the Virtual Inclined Plane in VR.

Some interactions in virtual environments need to be operated on inclined planes. If a real inclined plane can be found in the real environment that corresponds exactly to the angle of the virtual inclined plane to provide haptic feedback, the user's immersion can be enhanced. However, it is not easy to find such a real inclined plane in the real environment. We proposed a horizontal plane haptic redirection scheme, where users interacting with virtual inclined planes in virtual environments can obtain haptic feelings by using real horizontal planes that are easily available in the real world

HapticLink: A Force-based Haptic Feedback System for Single and Double Lower-Limb Amputees.

Lower limb amputation affects an estimated 1.71 million people in the US. The lack of sensory feedback and proprioception often causes loss of balance which heightens the risk of falls and injury. In this presented paper, a haptic feedback system named HapticLink was developed based on the weight distribution of the prosthetic foot to increase the individual's balance and the self-attribution of the prosthesis. The repeatability and linearity of four different force sensors were tested. The FlexiForce A201 sensors were identified as the optimal choice for the parameters and scenarios investiga

Development of a master-slave 3D printed robotic surgical finger with haptic feedback.

Robotic surgery started nearly 30 years ago. It has achieved telepresence and the performance of repetitive, precise, and accurate tasks. The "master-slave" robotic system allows control of manipulators by surgeon at distant site. Robotic surgical fingers were developed to allow surgeons to move them with accuracy through sensors fixed on surgeon's hand. Also, haptic sensors were developed to allow transmission of sensation from robotic finger to surgeon's finger. A complete system of a, 3D printed by a stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer, robotic surgical finger with haptic feedback system is

Combining FES and Exoskeletons in a Hybrid Haptic System for Enhancing VR Experience.

Robotic technology and functional electrical stimulation (FES) have emerged as highly effective rehabilitative techniques for individuals with neuromuscular diseases, showcasting their ability to restore motor functions. Within the proposed study, we developed and tested a new hybrid controller combining an upper-limb exoskeleton with FES to enhance haptic feedback when performing task-oriented and bimanual movement, like pick-and-place, in a virtual environment. We investigated the performance of the proposed approach on eight unimpaired participants providing haptic feedback either only by t

Crowd Navigation in VR: Exploring Haptic Rendering of Collisions.

Virtual reality (VR) is a valuable experimental tool for studying human movement, including the analysis of interactions during locomotion tasks for developing crowd simulation algorithms. However, these studies are generally limited to distant interactions in crowds, due to the difficulty of rendering realistic sensations of collisions in VR. In this article, we explore the use of wearable haptics to render contacts during virtual crowd navigation. We focus on the behavioral changes occurring with or without haptic rendering during a navigation task in a dense crowd, as well as on potential a

Design of a Haptic Palmar Device with Thumb Flexion and Circumduction Movements for Sensorimotor Stroke Rehabilitation.

To address the clinical need for high-intensity, repetitive sensorimotor hand training after stroke, we developed in a first step a novel haptic device for practicing finger movements. Because the thumb plays a fundamental role in the loss of autonomy and prehensile functions after stroke, we present here the development of a thumb module that complements our previous design. The novelties of our device are that it reduces the complexity to a minimum from a user perspective while still allowing anatomical thumb flexion/extension and circumduction movements with a highly functional range of mot

CathSym: Device and Method to Bring Haptic Feedback to Urinary Catheterization Training.

Urinary catheterization is one of the most widely taught procedures in the medical field. Current simulation-based training methods allow the students to be trained on non-realistic mannequins that do not adequately develop their psychomotor skills. This lack of proper training translates into increased likelihood of the medical professional causing damage to the patients' urethra in the form of false passages when faced with a difficult catheterization. The leading cause of this damage is the overuse of force that diverts the catheter head into the soft tissue. With the emergence of haptic fe
