Defense of winter-dormant Alaska paper birch against snowshoe hares.

Mature growth-phase internodes of Alaska paper birch (Betula resinifera) are preferred by the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) over juvenile growth-phase internodes due to the low food value of the latter. While the mature over juvenile preferencec cannot be explained by the levels of inorganic nutrients or gross chemical fractions (resins or phenols), it can be explained by the striking differences in secondary metabolites of the two growth phases. The principle compound which renders the juvenile phase internodes unpalatable is papyriferic acid, a triterpene which is a demonstrated feeding d

Brucellosis of the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus).

The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is an important reservoir of Brucella suis biovar 2 and also of the life-threatening zoonotic agent Francisella tularensis. Since both bacteria can produce similar gross pathological lesions in this species, laboratory tests are necessary for the final diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to develop an immunohistochemical method for the detection of B. suis infection and to describe the pathological and histological lesions caused by B. suis in European brown hares. Hyperimmune serum for immunohistochemistry (IHC) was produced by subcutaneous in

Seroprevalence of tularemia in wild bears and hares in Japan.

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis. The distribution of the pathogen in Japan has not been studied well. In this study, seroprevalence of tularemia among wild black bears and hares in Japan was determined. Blood samples collected from 431 Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) and 293 Japanese hares (Lepus brachurus) between 1998 and 2009 were examined for antibodies against F. tularensis by micro-agglutination test (MA) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. By subsequent confirmatory tests using western blot (WB) and indirect immunofluorescence assay (

[Fasciolosis in European hares (Lepus europaeus) in North-Western Germany].

In this case report pathomorphological findings of acute and chronic stages of fasciolosis are described in a European hare (Lepus europaeus) hunted in NorthWestern Germany. Acute hepatic lesions consisted of coagulation necrosis with haemorrhages and surrounding infiltrations of granulocytes and histiocytes. Subacute to chronic changes were characterized predominantly by pyogranulomatous inflammations with extensive fibrosis. Adult parasites and eggs were detectable.

Pulmonary protostrongyliasis in a mountain hare from Italy.

An adult male mountain hare (Lepus timidus), shot during the hunting season on the slopes of Mt. Civetta (eastern Alps, Veneto, northeastern Italy), was eviscerated and diffuse nodular lesions of verminous pneumonia were observed. Adult helminths were collected and male specimens were identified as Protostrongylus pulmonalis. Histologically, a non-purulent interstitial pneumonia and a desquamative bronchiolitis and alveolitis, along with thickening of alveolar septa, were apparent in the nodules. In several enlarged alveoli, a large number of eggs and larvae of nematodes were found. This is th

[Listeriosis in the European brown hare in northern Germany].

During the years 1988-1997 listeriosis was detected in nine (2.4%) of 373 perished hares, in one of these cases calicivirus was additionally found. The listeriosis occurred sporadically. Granulomatous hepatosplenomegaly was the main lesion observed. Pregnancy is an important predisposing factor for the outbreak of listeriosis: six of the nine cases were hares post abortum or with retention of macerated foetuses in utero.--Six Listeria strains were serotyped and all belonged to serovar 1/2a.

Minimising cardiac anaesthetic risk: the tortoise or the hare?

There is no doubt that a group of patients at increased risk of peri-operative cardiac morbidity exists and must be managed with the emphasis on the prevention of myocardial ischaemia. It is also clear that a potentially far larger group are at risk of failing to meet the increased cardiovascular and metabolic demands of surgery and therefore suffering the consequences of a relative hypoperfusion injury. Pre-operative assessment must address both groups and management regimens sought to provide optimal outcome for both. At present there is no consistent strategy for their identification, asses

Fleas and lice on scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) in South Africa.

A total of 380 scrub hares (Lepus saxatilis) from 5 localities, ranging from the north-eastern Transvaal to the eastern and the south-western Cape Province of South Africa, were examined for fleas and lice. Ctenocephalides felis damarensis was almost exclusively responsible for the flea infestations on hares at 4 of the 5 sites. At 4 localities the prevalence and abundance of this flea reached peaks between August and October and declined thereafter to their lowest levels between February and April. Its prevalence and abundance in the north-eastern Transvaal were not correlated with the breedi

Selected microbial agents in snowshoe hares and other vertebrates of Alberta.

Serologic surveillance of populations of snowshoe hares and other vertebrate species of north-central Alberta from 1961 to 1969, revealed activity of one bacterial and eight viral agents. The most prevalent agents infecting the snowshoe hare were California encephalitis and Silverwater viruses, while in other vertebrates California encephalitis and Western equine encephalomyelitis viruses were the most common. The role of the snowshoe hare in the natural history of the agents is considered as is the effect of the agent on the hare ten-year cycle of abundance.

Tularaemia in European Brown Hares (Lepus europaeus) and Mountain Hares (Lepus timidus) Characterized by Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry: Organ Lesions and Suggestions of Routes of Infection and Shedding.

Tularaemia is an emerging zoonotic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. In Sweden, hares are considered to be key species in the epidemiology of tularaemia. The aim of this study was to characterize the pathology of natural tularaemia infection in European brown hares (EBHs) (Lepus europaeus) and mountain hares (MHs) (Lepus timidus) in Sweden, in order to better understand the presentation of disease and the routes of infection, body dissemination and shedding of F. tularensis. During 2000-2013, 49 EBHs and 37 MHs were diagnosed with tularaemia. Enlargement of the

Predicting myxomatosis distribution in Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) through active surveillance.

Spatial epidemiology is key to follow the distribution and evolution of emerging pathogens. During outbreak investigations, information is initially obtained via passive surveillance and later complemented with data from active surveillance for a comprehensive picture of disease distribution. In 2018, a recombinant myxoma virus (ha-MYXV) emerged in Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis), significantly impacting their populations. Here, we use information generated by active surveillance, validating it with passive surveillance results (454 municipalities with confirmed cases), to predict the curren

Toxoplasma gondii infection in European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) in Brazil.

Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide zoonosis that affects warm-blooded animals, including humans. Wild animals can act as intermediate hosts of this pathogen; thus, this study aims to detect Toxoplasma gondii infection in invasive European brown hares in Brazil. For this, 72 wild European brown hares were captured from July 2020 to June 2022 in three Brazilian states: São Paulo, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul. The diagnostic of Toxoplasma gondii infection was performed by bioassay in mouse, histopathology in Hematoxylin-Eosin-stained tissue sections (brain, liver, lungs, kidneys, and small intestine),

Heavy metal accumulation in arctic hares (Lepus arcticus) in Nunavut, Canada.

Accumulation of cadmium, mercury, lead, copper and zinc was studied in muscle, liver and kidney of 9 adult and 7 juvenile arctic hares (Lepus arcticus), collected in 2003 in the southwestern part of Nunavut, Canada. Our objective was to determine the level of heavy metal accumulation, and distribution among age groups and tissue. Concentrations of all metals varied among tissues, and concentrations of Cd, Hg and Zn were higher in adults compared to juveniles. We found correlations in metal content among tissues, and among metals in kidneys. We also found the hares to have low concentration of

Phylogeographic Distribution of Human and Hare Francisella Tularensis Subsp. Holarctica Strains in the Netherlands and Its Pathology in European Brown Hares (Lepus Europaeus).

Sequence-based typing of Francisella tularensis has led to insights in the evolutionary developments of tularemia. In Europe, two major basal clades of F. tularensis subsp. holarctica exist, with a distinct geographical distribution. Basal clade B.6 is primarily found in Western Europe, while basal clade B.12 occurs predominantly in the central and eastern parts of Europe. There are indications that tularemia is geographically expanding and that strains from the two clades might differ in pathogenicity, with basal clade B.6 strains being potentially more virulent than basal clade B.12.
