Brain-Behavior Relationships: A Neurobiological Model of Group Hate.

Hate toward people groups is a significant cause of human suffering, yet we understand relatively little about its neurocognitive and neuroanatomical bases. While definitions of hate vary, most agree that it can be defined as an aversion to certain others that motivates attempts to expel them through methods ranging from physical violence to passive avoidance. The evolutionary roots of group hate are in the ingroup-outgroup distinction, in which the individual favors ingroup members over outgroup members. Earlier studies on the effects of hate speech and propaganda show that the dehumanization

Self-hate, dissociation, and suicidal behavior in bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often struggle with markedly low self- esteem and are at risk for suicidal behavior. Dissociation and perceived burdensomeness are often cited as facilitators of suicidal outcomes. Specifically, perceived burdensomeness is comprised of self-hate and liability on others, although it remains unclear which variables most heavily influence suicidal behavior in EDs. METHODS: In a sample of 204 women with bulimia nervosa, the present study examined the potential impact of self-hate and dissociation on suicidal behavior. We hypothesized that suicid

Hate and harassment in academia: the rising concern of the online environment.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the role of fluorescence-guided cystoscopy in a high-risk bladder cancer population undergoing screening based on a multi-marker panel of urine-tests (UroScreen-study). PATIENTS AND METHODS: UroScreen was conducted as a validation study for tumor markers within the frame of a health surveillance program of workers with occupational exposure to aromatic amines. Voluntary annual screens were done in 1,609 men. Cytology, quantitative NMP22® assay, and UroVysion (FISH) were applied to 7091 urine samples. Subjects with at least one positive urine-based tumor ma

Youth Exposure to Hate in the Online Space: An Exploratory Analysis.

Today's youth have extensive access to the internet and frequently engage in social networking activities using various social media platforms and devices. This is a phenomenon that hate groups are exploiting when disseminating their propaganda. This study seeks to better understand youth exposure to hateful material in the online space by exploring predictors of such exposure including demographic characteristics (age, gender, and race), academic performance, online behaviors, online disinhibition, risk perception, and parents/guardians' supervision of online activities. We implemented a cros

Ingroup Empathy, Help, and Blame After Anti-LGBT+ Hate Crime.

Crimes motivated by hatred toward a person's sexual orientation or gender identity typically cause greater physical and emotional harm than comparative crimes not motivated by hate. Compounding these impacts, hate crime victims receive less empathy, less support, and are blamed more for their victimization both by society in general and by criminal justice agencies. However, as hate crimes are the epitome of intergroup hostility, the crimes are also likely to engender an ingroup empathy bias in which fellow LGBT+ people provide greater empathy to hate crime victims, potentially motivating grea

Lost in Translation? Applying the Hate Crime Concept to an Indian Context.

Hate crime is increasingly a familiar term within the domains of scholarship, policy, and activism as the harms associated with acts of targeted hostility continue to pose complex, global challenges. However, an exclusively Western-centric focus has done little to foster transnational conversations or to shape conceptual or legal frameworks in parts of the world where the challenges posed by hate and prejudice remain underexplored despite their devastating consequences. This article considers how the complexities and specificities of the Indian context disrupt the dominant assumptions of conve

Pathologizing dissent: identity politics, Zionism and the 'self-hating Jew'.

This article discusses problems with Kurt Lewin's notion of self-hatred among Jews (Lewin, 1941/1948), and illustrates the ways in which the concept is used in identity politics. It argues that the way the notion of self-hatred is often used makes it problematic as a psychological concept because it requires that we accept particular definitions of group identities and particular political positions as central to those identities. Often, however, such issues are disputed by group members. Examination of the literature illustrates that it is rarely a straightforward decision whether those behav

Fear, disgust, hate: negative emotions evoked by animals in ancient literature.

Ancient literature contains thoughts, observations and opinions about animals causing fear, disgust or hate that can be of great interest to scientists researching the problem of phobias, fears and anxieties in history. So in this article, it is argued that we can go as far back as ancient times in the research on the history of animal phobias (or, speaking more generally, in research on the entire spectrum of negative emotions evoked by animals in individuals or in entire social groups or societies). In that period, the phenomenon was observed and described in an anecdotal form, and attempts

The influence of hate speech on adolescents' bystander intention and TNB aggression.

Although the visibility of trans and non-binary (TNB) individuals has increased in recent years, gender identity-based discrimination remains a significant social issue. However, there is an important gap in the research examining the mechanisms involved in TNB aggression. This study longitudinally analyzed the relationship between exposure to hate speech across different contexts and bystander intentions and aggression toward TNB individuals. Additionally, gender invariance was tested. A total of 755 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years (Mage = 16.28; SD = 0.88; 50.8% identified as girls, 48.7% as

Understanding Online Hate Toward Sexual and Gender Minorities: A Systematic Review.

Online hate speech (OHS) refers to discriminatory or offensive content shared via digital platforms that targets social groups. Synthesizing evidence on OHS directed at sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) is crucial, given the disproportionate online discrimination experienced by SGM people and its implications for well-being and social norms. This PRISMA-based systematic review synthesized quantitative studies in which the target of OHS content was SGM people, regardless of whether participants were SGM or non-SGM. We addressed four questions: (a) OHS definitions and operationalizations; (b)

Psychological sequelae of hate-crime victimization among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

Questionnaire data about criminal victimization experiences were collected from 2,259 Sacramento-area lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (N = 1,170 women, 1,089 men). Approximately 1/5 of the women and 1/4 of the men had experienced victimization because of their adult sexual orientation. Hate crimes were less likely than nonbias crimes to have been reported to police. Compared with other recent crime victims, lesbian and gay hate-crime survivors manifested significantly more symptoms of depression, anger, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. They also displayed significantly more crime-related fe

The Love and Hate Relationship between T5SS and Other Secretion Systems in Bacteria.

Bacteria have existed on Earth for billions of years, exhibiting ubiquity and involvement in various biological activities. To ensure survival, bacteria usually release and secrete effector proteins to acquire nutrients and compete with other microorganisms for living space during long-term evolution. Consequently, bacteria have developed a range of secretion systems, which are complex macromolecular transport machines responsible for transporting proteins across the bacterial cell membranes. Among them, one particular secretion system that stands out from the rest is the type V secretion syst

['I'm in hate with you; epistemic distrust in patients with a severe personality disorder].

Background The assessment and treatment of patients with a personality disorder have made considerable progress during the last decades. Unfortunately, this progress is often limited to patients with a personality disorder in general. Patients with a personality disorder who also fulfil criteria for a severe mental illness (SMI-PD) profit less. Aim To describe the relationship between contemporary paradigms about personality disorders and the current treatment practices of patients with SMI-PD, and to assess the added value of the recently introduced paradigm epistemic trust and distrust. Pandemics: waves of disease, waves of hate from the Plague of Athens to A.I.D.S.

This article briefly surveys the history of pandemics in the West, contesting long-held assumptions that epidemics sparked hatred and blame of the 'Other', and that it was worse when diseases were mysterious as to their causes and cures. The article finds that blame and hate were rarely connected with pandemics in history. In antiquity, epidemics more often brought societies together rather than dividing them as continued to happen with some diseases such as influenza in modernity. On the other hand, some diseases such as cholera were more regularly blamed than others and triggered violence ev

Childhood Emotional Abuse and Somatic Symptoms: The Mediating Effect of Self-Hate.

Childhood emotional abuse is a recognized factor for long-term psychological and physical health problems, including persistent somatic symptoms. Negative self-beliefs, such as self-hate-related beliefs, may explain how emotional mistreatment contributes to physical distress in adulthood beyond general emotional difficulties. A longitudinal study was conducted with 298 help-seeking adults. At baseline, participants completed measures of childhood emotional abuse, self-hate, and general negative affectivity. Somatic symptoms were assessed two months later. Mediation analyses tested whether self

Heat shock protein 60 and cardiovascular diseases: An intricate love-hate story.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the result of complex pathophysiological processes in the tissues comprising the heart and blood vessels. Inflammation is the main culprit for the development of cardiovascular dysfunction, and it may be traced to cellular stress events including apoptosis, oxidative and shear stress, and cellular and humoral immune responses, all of which impair the system's structure and function. An intracellular chaperone, heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) is an intriguing example of a protein that may both be an ally and a foe for cardiovascular homeostasis; on one hand prov

Mapping Interpersonal Hate: A Network and Mediation Analysis of Anger, Rumination, and Grudge.

Hate, an intense negative emotion, can disrupt and damage interpersonal relationships following transgressions. Despite its destructive potential, the psychological mechanism that fuels hate remains poorly understood. Anger has been identified as a primary component of hate, yet anger and hate differ in their appraisal tendencies and motivational goals. This raises a critical question: how does anger contribute to the emergence of hate? To address this, the present study examined the interplay among anger, anger rumination, grudge, and hate. A total of 740 participants completed self-report me

Why do people stay in hateful relationships? The concept of malignant vindictiveness.

Why do couples remain in hateful relationships? This article defines theoretically rigorous ways of viewing partners who stay together despite severe strife. A case presentation shows how a relationship of two people, each with his or her character structure and idealized image, creates interpersonal conflict because of opposing demands each makes on self and other. Such conflict requires radical defensive measures including alienation, idealization, and externalization that increase tensions. A vicious circle of malignant vindictiveness cements the relationship. Increasing implacability in th

In-party love spreads more efficiently than out-party hate in online communities.

In this article, we present the findings of a comprehensive longitudinal social network analysis conducted on Twitter across four consecutive election campaigns in Spain, spanning from 2015 to 2019. Our focus is on the discernible trend of increasing partisan and ideological homogeneity within interpersonal exchanges on this social media platform, alongside high levels of networking efficiency measured through average retweeting. This diachronic study allows us to observe how dynamics of party competition might contribute to perpetuating and strengthening network ideological and partisan homop
