Head movements during conversational speech in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Motor abnormalities are frequently described in schizophrenia, and work by Altorfer and colleagues suggests that measuring head movements during conversational speech shows differences at the level of the individual. We wished to see whether their findings, conducted using computer analysis of video obtained in motion capture suites, could be replicated using compact, portable movement sensors, in a case-control study comparing the mean amplitude of head movements during general conversation. METHODS: A referred sample of inpatients and outpatients with a diagnosis of paranoid sch

The perception of heading during eye movements.

When a person walks through a rigid environment while holding eyes and head fixed, the pattern of retinal motion flows radially away from a point, the focus of expansion (Fig. 1a). Under such conditions of translation, heading corresponds to the focus of expansion and people identify it readily. But when making an eye/head movement to track an object off to the side, retinal motion is no longer radial (Fig. 1b). Heading perception in such situations has been modelled in two ways. Extra-retinal models monitor the velocity of rotational movements through proprioceptive or efference information f

Adaptive plasticity of head movement propensity.

Individual humans exhibit differing propensity to move the head in association with saccadic shifts in gaze. We assessed whether this tendency can be modified in normal subjects by either reducing neck mobility with a cervical collar or restricting the field of view using aperture spectacles. We quantified head movement propensity in terms of the range of orbital eccentricity within which the eyes are customarily maintained (customary ocular motor range), and the range of final eye-in-head eccentricity for which a planned saccade is likely to be executed without a concomitant head movement (ey

Reafferent head-movement signals carried by pursuit neurons of the simian frontal eye fields during head movements.

The smooth-pursuit system is important to precisely track a slowly moving object and maintain its image on the foveae during movement. During whole-body rotation, the smooth-pursuit system interacts with the vestibular system. The caudal part of the frontal eye fields (FEF) contains smooth pursuit-related neurons that signal eye velocity during pursuit. The majority of them receives vestibular inputs and signal gaze-velocity during passive whole-body rotation. It was asked whether discharge modulation of FEF pursuit neurons during head rotation on the stationary trunk could be accounted for by

Head movements and simulator sickness generated by a virtual environment.

BACKGROUND: For virtual environments (VEs) to be useful in training it is important to understand the negative effects of VE exposure. The purpose of this study was to observe head movements in virtual and real environments and the relation between those movements and simulator sickness. METHOD: There were 48 men who were trained in 4-person teams in either a head-mounted display (HMD)-based VE or in a real world environment. Head position data were collected in both systems and simulator sickness scores were collected in the VE. The relationship of head movements and sickness scores in theVE

A task for assessing vertigo elicited by repetitive head movements.

OBJECTIVE: We developed a simple, inexpensive test for assessing vertigo in persons with peripheral vestibular disorders. METHOD: The test was administered to 16 asymptomatic adults and 16 patients with chronic vertigo caused by peripheral vestibular disorders. Participants sat in a chair and as rapidly as possible transferred 25 beanbags one at a time from a basket placed on the floor to a basket held .91 m up in the air. The task was timed, and the participants rated the level of vertigo elicited on a 10-point scale. RESULTS: Patients took significantly more time to perform the task and re

Eye-head coordination in moderately affected Huntington's Disease patients: do head movements facilitate gaze shifts?

In addition to many other symptoms, Huntington's Disease (HD) also causes an impairment of oculomotor functions. In particular, saccadic eye movements become progressively slower and more difficult to initiate; ultimately, patients are forced to recur to large head thrusts as means to initiate gaze shifts. We wondered whether, as a precursor of this condition, head movements would facilitate gaze shifts already in early stages of the disease. We studied horizontal head movements and eye-head coordination in 29 early stage HD patients (Ps) and 24 age matched controls (Cs). Subjects tracked rand

Oscillatory head movements in cervical dystonia: Dystonia, tremor, or both?

Cervical dystonia is characterized by abnormal posturing of the head, often combined with tremor-like oscillatory head movements. The nature and source of these oscillatory head movements is controversial, so they were quantified to delineate their characteristics and develop a hypothetical model for their genesis. A magnetic search coil system was used to measure head movements in 14 subjects with cervical dystonia. Two distinct types of oscillatory head movements were detected for most subjects, even when they were not clinically evident. One type had a relatively large amplitude and jerky i

Motion sickness severity under interaction of vection and head movements.

Vection alone, or combined with head movements, has been shown to invoke motion sickness (MS). This study's purpose was to observe how different combinations of vection and head movements influenced the severity of MS. We tested 26 subjects in a rotating sphere at a speed of 45 degrees/s, resulting in vertical yaw, horizontal roll or pitch vection. Coincidently, subjects pitched, rolled, or yawed their heads (0.5 Hz, 20 degrees). We found that yaw vection combined with pitch or roll head movements significantly increased MS, while pitch vection with any type of head movement, or head and scene

Head deviation in progressive supranuclear palsy: enhanced vestibulo-collic reflex or loss of resetting head movements?

It is unclear how the torticollis occasionally observed in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) relates to vestibulo-collic reflex mechanisms. We report here the results of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in a PSP patient with forced head deviation in the opposite direction of turning, leading to torticollis for a few seconds. As VEMPs were normal bilaterally we conclude that an enhanced vestibulo-collic reflex per se is not the cause of the torticollis in our patient. The abnormal head deviation induced by turning in some PSP patients is best explained by damage to

Nucleotide-induced movements in the myosin head near the converter region.

Structural changes in subfragment 1 of skeletal muscle myosin were investigated by cross-linking trypsin-cleaved S1 with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide. In the absence of nucleotide the alkali light chains are cross-linked to the 27 kDa heavy chain fragment; the presence of MgATP reduces the efficiency of this reaction. On the other hand, MgATP promotes the cross-link formation between the N-terminal 27 kDa and C-terminal 20 kDa fragments of the heavy chain. The chemical cleavage of the cross-linked heavy chains fragments with N-chlorosuccinimide and hydroxylamine indicates that
