The effects of whole-body vibration and head supported mass on performance and muscular demand.

For military rotary-wing aircrew, little is known about the interactive effects of vibration exposure and the addition of head supported mass (HSM) on target acquisition performance, head kinematics, and muscular demand. Sixteen healthy male participants wore an aviator helmet with replica night vision goggles and completed rapid aiming head movements to acquire visual targets in axial and off-axis movement trajectories while secured in a Bell-412 helicopter seat mounted to a human-rated shaker platform. HSM configuration (with or without a counterweight (CW)) and vertical whole-body vibration

Influence of play type on the magnitude and number of head impacts sustained in youth American football.

The magnitude and number of head impacts experienced by young American football players are associated with negative brain health outcomes and may be affected by play-type strategies. The purpose of this research was to examine how play type affects the magnitude and number of head impacts in youth American tackle football. Head impacts were recorded for 30 games in the 5-9 age category and 30 games in the 9-14 age category. Impacts using physical and finite element models were conducted to determine the brain strain. Run plays had a higher head impact frequency in both age groups (p < 0.05).

Performance of horse-riding helmets in frontal and side impacts.

Cases of head injury are reviewed in which riders wearing jockey skull caps have suffered impacts to the front, back or side of their helmets. The design and constructional materials of such helmets are assessed. Impact tests that simulate the accidents confirm the low energy absorption potential of some helmets for lateral impacts. Most pedal or motorcycle helmet designs afford better lateral impact protection.

Five-year review of spinal cord injuries in motorcyclists.

One hundred and twenty motorcyclists with significant spinal cord injuries, who were admitted to hospital over a five-year period, have been reviewed. Fifty-one per cent of them suffered direct injuries to the vertebral column and spinal cord, the majority remaining permanently paraplegic. Thirteen of the 25 riders who became tetraplegic were wearing open-face helmets, and 11 of these remained permanently paralysed. The survey suggests that the open-face helmet offers less protection to the cervical spinal cord than the full-face helmet. There is an urgent need to review standards for the desi

Surgical helmets can be converted into efficient disinfectable powered air-purifying respirators.

BACKGROUND: Filtering facepiece respirators often fail to provide sufficient protection due to a poor fit. Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are not designed for healthcare personnel, and are challenging to disinfect. Surgical helmets (SH) are available in many United States hospitals but do not provide respiratory protection. Several modifications to SH have been suggested, but none are sufficiently compliant with safety and efficiency standards. The purpose of this investigation was the development of a filter adaptor, which converts SHs into efficient, safe, and disinfectable PAPRs.

Head and facial injuries after low-speed motor-cycle accidents.

In the United Kingdom there appears to be little available information concerning the prevalence and the patterns of head and of facial injuries sustained in road traffic accidents by motorcyclists wearing protective helmets. The present preliminary survey was of 56 accidents in urban traffic. 50 per cent of surviving motor-cyclists incurred head injuries. Soft tissue facial wounds were sustained by 38 per cent and fractures of facial bone and teeth by 11 per cent of the injured. The majority of the accidents occurred at speeds of 30 m.p.h. or less to riders of machines of small cubic capacity

Performance of baseball headgear.

An experiment was conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of commercially available baseball headgear in a simulated environment where the head of the batter is struck. Using a compressed air cannon, baseballs were fired at an instrumented headform at frontal and temporal locations with and without a helmet. Striking velocities ranged from 50 to 120 mph and rebound velocities were 1/3 to 1/2 of that of the initial speed. Additional impact tests were conducted on equivalent flat helmet sections backed by a rigid steel plate, the results of which seemed to indicate that the materials and config

Skateboarding injuries.

Skateboarding has experienced intermittent periods of popularity since the 1960s. Along with this popularity, there have been concomitant increases in numerous types of injuries. Most documented cases occur in boys aged from 10 to 14 years, with injuries ranging from minor cuts and abrasions to multiple fractures and, in some cases, even death. Although head injuries account for approximately 3.5 to 9% of all skateboarding injuries, fractures of both upper and lower extremities account for 50% of all musculoskeletal trauma. Not surprising is the fact that 33% of those injured on skateboards ar

On-Field Deployment and Validation for Wearable Devices.

Wearable sensors are an important tool in the study of head acceleration events and head impact injuries in sporting and military activities. Recent advances in sensor technology have improved our understanding of head kinematics during on-field activities; however, proper utilization and interpretation of data from wearable devices requires careful implementation of best practices. The objective of this paper is to summarize minimum requirements and best practices for on-field deployment of wearable devices for the measurement of head acceleration events in vivo to ensure data evaluated are r

A Hybrid Paradigm to Develop Head Injury Criteria for Behind Helmet Blunt Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The widely used head injury criterion (HIC) has improved human safety and vehicle design in automotive environments. Because of its application to civilians, tests that led to HIC were conducted without helmets. Studies focusing on military environments are sparse. Behind helmet blunt trauma (BHBT)-specific head injury criteria do not exist to the best knoweldge of the authors. The objective of this study is to present a focused literature review of military studies and a novel paradigm for developing enhanced BHBT medical injury criteria (EMIC) for assessing helmet performance a

Helmet-Head Decoupling in Ice Hockey Impacts: An In-lab Exploratory Study Using Autoregressive Modeling of Acceleration Data Measured from a Helmet-Mounted Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU).

PURPOSE: This study aims to develop and validate in-lab a novel approach for estimating head linear acceleration in ice hockey impacts using IMU-instrumented helmets. The use of AutoRegressive (AR) modeling was investigated as a solution to mitigate the decoupling observed between the helmet and the head. METHODS: A series of impacts were conducted on a helmeted Hybrid III 50th percentile male Anthropometric Test Device (ATD). The impacts were performed using a custom-built pendulum impactor in four directions (front, front-oblique, side and back-oblique) and at two energies, 33 and 79 J, exc

Quality Issues in Kinematic Traces from Three Head Impact Sensors in Boxing: Prevalence, Effects, and Implications for Exposure Assessment.

PURPOSE: When used in-vivo or in biofidelic environments, many head impact sensors have shown limitations related to the quality and validity of the kinematics measured. The objectives were to assess the quality of kinematic traces from three head impact sensors, determine the effects of signal quality on peak accelerations, and compare measurements across sensors. METHODS: Head impacts were collected with instrumented mouthguards, skin patches, and headgear patches during boxing sparring. The quality of the raw kinematic traces for 442 events for each sensor was categorized using pre-defined

Predictive Helmet Optimization Framework Based on Reduced-Order Modeling of the Brain Dynamics.

Sports-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the leading causes of head injuries in the world. Use of helmets is the main protective measure against this epidemic. The design criteria for the majority of the helmets often only consider the kinematics of the head. This approach neglects the importance of regional deformations of the brain especially near the deep white matter structures such as the corpus callosum (CC) which have been implicated in mTBI studies. In this work, we develop a dynamical reduced-order model of the skull-brain-helmet system to analyze the effect of various

Repetitive Head Impact Exposure in College Football Following an NCAA Rule Change to Eliminate Two-A-Day Preseason Practices: A Study from the NCAA-DoD CARE Consortium.

Repetitive head impact exposure sustained by athletes of contact sports has been hypothesized to be a mechanism for concussion and a possible explanation for the high degree of variability in sport-related concussion biomechanics. In an attempt to limit repetitive head impact exposure during the football preseason, the NCAA eliminated two-a-day practices in 2017, while maintaining the total number of team practice sessions. The objective of this study was to quantify head impact exposure during the preseason and regular season in Division I college football athletes to determine whether the 20

Flexible, self-powered sensors for estimating human head kinematics relevant to concussions.

The present work demonstrates the development of a flexible, self-powered sensor patch that can be used to estimate angular acceleration and angular velocity, which are two essential markers for predicting concussions. The device monitors the dynamic strain experienced by the neck through a thin, polypropylene-based ferroelectret nanogenerator that produces a voltage pulse with profile proportional to strain. The intrinsic property of this device to convert mechanical input to electrical output, along with its flexibility and [Formula: see text] 100 [Formula: see text]m thickness makes it a vi

Position-Specific Circumstances of Concussions in the NFL: Toward the Development of Position-Specific Helmets.

Consideration of position-specific features of the NFL concussion environment could enable improved risk mitigation through the design of position-specific helmets to improve self-protection as well as protection for the other player with whom the contact occurs. The purpose of this paper is to quantify position-specific features of scenarios resulting in concussions to NFL players, and the players they contact, by reviewing all game footage (broadcast and non-broadcast) over 4 seasons. Position-specific features were documented for 647 concussions in which a primary exposure could be visualiz

Factors Affecting Head Impact Exposure in College Football Practices: A Multi-Institutional Study.

Biomechanical data collected from head impacts in football have been used to characterize exposure and predict injury risk. This study sought to specifically quantify the factors that contribute towards player head impact exposure in college football practices. All players included in this study were outfitted with football helmets instrumented with accelerometer arrays (Head Impact Telemetry System). Head impact exposure was defined by the number of head impacts each player experienced in practice, the number of practice head impacts normalized by the number of practice sessions (practice hea
