Preoperative embolization of hypervascular head and neck neoplasms using microfibrillar collagen.

Microfibrillar collagen is a bovine collagen material that promotes hemostasis. When mixed with contrast material it makes a fine slurry that is easily injected through small catheters. Experience with preoperative embolization of head and neck neoplasms in six patients indicates that microfibrillar collagen slurry is a highly effective, easy to use embolic material for occlusion of highly vascular neoplasms.

Extranodal hematopoietic neoplasms and mimics in the head and neck: an update.

The head and neck region is a common site for extranodal lymphomas, second only to the gastrointestinal tract; and 12% to 15% of all head and neck tumors are lymphomas. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are most common, and Hodgkin lymphoma occurs rarely at extranodal sites in the head and neck. Most non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the head and neck region are of B-cell lineage, and the Waldeyer ring is the most common site. Head and neck lymphomas have distinctive epidemiological and clinicopathologic features, including an association with immunosuppression, infectious organisms, or autoimmune disorders; site-

Endoscopic ultrasonography in the diagnosis and staging of neoplasms of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a minimally invasive and highly accurate method of detecting mediastinal lymph-node metastases in gastrointestinal and lung cancer. Little information is available regarding the use of EUS-FNA to stage tumors in the head and neck region. This study reports experience with EUS in the diagnosis and staging of these tumors and their mediastinal spread. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of patients who underwent EUS for diagnosis and/or staging of head and neck tumors were reviewed. Referral criteria were

[Plasmacellular neoplasms of the head and neck: clinical status and personal experience].

In this review, the authors examine the diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic advances in clinical management of Solitary Plasmacytoma of bone, Extramedullary Plasmacytoma and their relationship to multiple myeloma. The clinical differences among these tumors are the subject of continued studies. Oral symptoms and signs of the neoplasias are relatively common. The literature is reviewed with respect to the prevalence of oral and maxillofacial manifestations and the presence of such manifestations as the first sign and/or symptom of disease. The case of a young adult patient, with a kappa-ligh

[Secondary head and neck osteosarcoma following treatment of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal neoplasms (UCNT)].

Secondary tumours after radio and/or chemotherapy are mainly of hematopoietic (acute non lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma) or soft tissue lineage previously described most frequently after breast cancer and Hodgkin disease treatment with radio and/or chemotherapy. We report two cases of classical osteosarcoma's observed 9 and 3 years after treatment for UCNT with combined radiotherapy and alkylant-based adjuvant chemotherapy in one case and exclusive loco-regional irradiation in the second case.

Top Ten Differentials to Mull Over for Head and Neck Myoepithelial Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Myoepithelial neoplasms of the salivary gland are benign or malignant neoplasms composed exclusively of neoplastic myoepithelial cells. These tumors, including the benign myoepithelioma and the malignant counterpart myoepithelial carcinoma, exhibit a wide range of cytomorphologic features and architectural patterns. METHODS: Review. RESULTS: Myoepithelial cells can be epithelial, plasmacytoid, clear cell, spindle cell, and/or oncocytic cell, arranging as trabeculae, solid sheets, nests, cords, and/or single cells. A stromal component is commonly but not universally present, There

[Combined usage of taxotere in induction chemotherapy of head and neck neoplasms].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: There were few reports about combined usage of taxotere in induction chemotherapy of head and neck cancer. It was reported previously that the total response rate in advanced head and neck cancer using TPF regimen [taxotere+cisplatin(DDP)+5-fluorouracil (5-FU)] was 93%. In this article, the authors preliminarily reported the response rate and side effects of TPF regimen in head and neck cancers. METHODS: Twenty-five cases with head and neck cancers in Guangzhou Tumor Hospital from January 1999 to June 2002 were reviewed. All cases underwent induction chemotherapy using

Second malignant neoplasms in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

The incidence of second malignant neoplasms (SMN) was analyzed in 714 patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. With a minimum follow-up of 3.5 years and 2,540 person-years at risk 84 SMN (10 synchronous and 74 metachronous) developed in 81 patients. The relative risk of SMN was 2.4. The actuarial method showed an annual incidence of SMN of 3.5%. For oral cavity and oropharyngeal tumors the annual incidence of SMN was 4.0% and 3.8% respectively, compared to 2.1% for laryngeal cancer (p < 0.013 and 0.017 respectively). Sex, age or stage of th

[Role of the tumor marker TAG-72 in head and neck neoplasms].

The serum glycoprotein TAG-72 level was determined in 34 patients with chronic laryngitis or ENT malignancy. This marker is in widespread use in cases of gynaecological and gastrointestinal malignancy. TAG-72 levels did not differ significantly either from the levels of healthy subjects or in the post-operative follow-up, so that this indicator appears to be of no clinical value in head and neck oncology.

Pathways for cervical metastasis in malignant neoplasms of the head and neck region.

There have been significant changes in the evaluation and management of lymphatic metastases in the neck during the past several decades, and knowledge of the functional anatomy of the cervical lymphatics is fundamental to the clinical management of metastasis in this region. This review provides a comprehensive description of the cervical lymphatics and discusses how this knowledge is used in the modern management of the neck lymphatics in the setting of common cancers of the head and neck. The patterns of tumor spread can be delineated based on the well-studied functional anatomy of the lymp

Pattern of head and neck malignant neoplasms in HIV-infected patients in Kenya.

HIV-infected patients face a greater risk of developing malignant disease. The most commonly reported neoplasms of the head and neck region include Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). There is also an increased risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A descriptive cross-sectional study including HIV-infected patients with neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions was conducted. Of the 200 participants, 116 (58%) were male and 84 (42%) female with an age range of 18-61 years (mean 37 years). The females were significantly younger (mean 33 years) than the males (mean 37 years

[Special mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck: Update from the 2022 WHO].

Similar to the approach adopted in the classification of tumors in other organs, a new feature of the current Word Health Organization (WHO) classification of the head and neck tumors is the exclusion of soft tissue tumors from single organs and their inclusion in a separate chapter devoted to them. This applies to tumors that are principally ubiquitous but show a predilection for the head and neck sites. The only exception to this rule represents those entities that are almost restricted to a specific head and neck site/organ (such as nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, sinonasal glomangiopericytoma

[Head and neck neoplasms and palliative care, symptoms and quality of life: literature review.].

Head-neck neoplasms are the fifth most common cancer. Head-neck patients are particularly exposed to quality of life impairment due to the central anatomical-functional role of this region in primary functions such as breathing, swallowing and phonation. Many patients are already at an advanced stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis and their prognosis remains unfavourable despite new treatment options. They face daily with multiple and simultaneous symptoms. In 20% of cases the average survival is only 5 months, making it appropriate to take charge early for the important need of palli

Rare Head and Neck Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: A Retrospective Study of Prognosis and Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) of the head and neck (HN) region are rare, with limited reported cases. NENs are classified into neuroendocrine tumors (NET) grades G1, G2, and G3, and neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs), with varying treatment strategies. This study investigated patient outcomes of HN-NENs and proposed a treatment algorithm based on pathological classification. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 24 HN-NEN cases treated at Kyushu University Hospital (2007-2023). Tumors were classified using the 2022 WHO criteria, and overall survival rates were

[Incidence of epithelial neoplasms in the head and neck area in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas].

There is an increased risk of malignancy in patients with genetically determined or acquired immunosuppression. The authors report a case of a 70-year-old patient with a lymphoplasmocytic immunocytoma who developed 19 squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) and nine basal-cell carcinomas (BCC) over a three-year period. This was the reason to review 100 cases of malignant lymphomas for evidence of additional malignancies. Of these patients, 15% had one or more SCC or BCC in the head and neck area. The age range was 59 to 79 years (mean, 71.7 years) and the male:female ratio 11:4. One or more SCC arose i
