Headache is extremely prevalent and experienced by almost everyone. A clinical test for the diagnosis of headache is still lacking, and a detailed clinical description is therefore essential for a precise diagnosis. The second edition of the International Headache Classification is presented, along with a translation into Danish. The major changes from the first edition are a detailed description of several subtypes of migraine, three subdivisions of tension-type headache according to frequency of headache and a major extension of the chapter concerning secondary headaches due to medication ov

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Medication overuse headache (MOH)is a disabling problem worldwide with areas of controversy regarding its cause. This article reviews the recent ideas regarding the development of this disorder and its effective management.
RECENT FINDINGS: It has been proposed that all acute migraine medications can lead to MOH, with differences in the propensity of different agents to cause the problem. Early data suggests that gepants, which are small-molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonists used for the acute treatment of migraine, may be an exception. Recent studies show th

OBJECTIVES: The management of chronic migraine (CM) with Medication Overuse Headache (MOH) consists of withdrawal therapy, education on medications' use and prescription of prophylaxis. Little attention has been given to patients who fail in achieving a successful short-term outcome after withdrawal: we aim to describe predictors of failure.
METHODS: Patients with CM and MOH were enrolled at the Neurological Institute C. Besta of Milano, and included if they completed the three months follow-up. Withdrawal failure was defined as the situation in which patients either did not revert from chron

In clinical practice, correctly diagnosing headaches can be challenging due to the many differential diagnoses. It is particularly important to differentiate between the more common primary headache types, where the headache itself is the main condition, and secondary headaches, which may have potentially lifethreatening causes. The diagnostic approach initially focuses on identifying secondary headaches.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
Discontinuation of medication still remains a key element in the treatment of medication overuse headache (MOH), but there is no consensus on the withdrawal procedure. We aimed to share the promising results of anesthetic blockade of greater occipital nerve (GON), which can be an alternative to existing treatments during the early withdrawal period of MOH treatment.
.
METHODS:
This study was conducted using regular electronic medical records and headache diaries of patients diagnosed with MOH and treated with anesthetic GON blockade with 0.5% bupivacaine

Medication overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary headache disorder attributed to overuse of acute headache medications by a person with an underlying headache disorder, usually migraine or tension-type headache. MOH is common among individuals with 15 or more headache days per month. Although MOH is associated with substantial disability and reductions in quality of life, this condition is often under-recognized. As MOH is both preventable and treatable, it warrants greater attention and awareness. The diagnosis of MOH is based on the history and an unremarkable neurological examination, and i

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders are disabling, with major consequences for productivity, yet the literature is silent on the relationship between headache-attributed disability and lost productivity, often erroneously regarding the two as synonymous. We evaluated the relationship empirically, having earlier found that investment in structured headache services would be cost saving, not merely cost-effective, if reductions in headache-attributed disability led to > 20% pro rata recovery of lost productivity.
METHODS: We used individual participant data from Global Campaign population-based stud

Regular and frequent use of analgesics and acute antimigraine drugs can increase the frequency of headache, and induce the transition from episodic to chronic migraine or medication-overuse headache (MOH). The one-year prevalence of this condition is between 1% and 2% in Europe, provoking substantial burden. MOH is more prevalent in people with comorbid depression, anxiety, and other chronic pain conditions. This paper aims at presenting an updating of French recommendations regarding treatments strategies. Prior French recommendations, published in 2014, were written in French. A literature s

INTRODUCTION: Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a common debilitating neurological disorder, with a prevalence of 1% to 7% in general population. It affects more than 60 million people worldwide and provokes substantial burden. Despite that, most practitioners don't know MOH. This review aims at presenting MOH clinical features, pathophysiology insights, and recent knowledge and guidance regarding treatments.
AREAS COVERED: A literature search in the major medical databases including the terms 'medication overuse headache,' 'chronic daily headache,' 'chronic migraine,' 'symptomatic medicat

It is a widely accepted idea that medications taken to relieve acute headache pain can paradoxically worsen headache if used too often. This type of secondary headache is referred to as medication overuse headache (MOH); previously used terms include rebound headache and drug-induced headache. In the absence of consensus about the duration of use, amount, and type of medication needed to cause MOH, the default position is conservative. A common recommendation is to limit treatment to no more than 10 or 15 days per month (depending on medication type) to prevent headache frequency progression.

Migraine with and without aura, cluster headache, hypnic headache, and paroxysmal hemicranias are each reported as intrinsically related to sleep. Chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache, and medication overuse headache may cause sleep disturbance. Otherwise, both headache and sleep disorder may be manifestations of a same systemic dysfunction. There is a vicious cycle linking sleep disorders and migraine. The poor quality or poor duration of sleep could be a trigger of migraine attack and migraineurs with poor sleep reported a higher headache frequency. Moreover, coping behaviors of m

Headaches are one of the most frequent causes of consultations in general practice. Of more than 350 known headache tendencies, tension-type headache and migraine are particularly common in general practice. Medication overuse headache (MOH) is also common but rarely diagnosed. The medical consultation with a targeted anamnesis is the cornerstone of the diagnosis and correct classification. A detailed neurological examination completes the basic diagnosis. Additional laboratory and instrumental diagnostics follow in cases of atypical headache or clinical suspicion of secondary headache. This a

INTRODUCTION: Medication overuse headache is a secondary headache in which the regular or frequent use of analgesics can increase the frequency of the episodes, causing the transition from episodic to chronic headache. The prevalence of medication overuse headache is approximately 1-2%, with higher rates among women aged 30-50 years and with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety, or other chronic pain disorders. It is important to be familiar with the management of this disease. To this end, the Spanish Society of Neurology's Headache Study Group has prepared a consensus

BACKGROUND: Chronic headaches and medication overuse headache are common and burdening conditions. No studies have evaluated the prevalence of chronic headache and medication overuse headache in an unselected Italian population.
METHODS: We performed a three-year cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based study to investigate prevalence, natural history, and prognostic factors of chronic headache. We delivered a self-administered questionnaire to 25,163 subjects. Chronic headache patients were interviewed by General Practitioners. After three years, medication overuse headache patients

Primary and secondary headache disorders have established diagnostic criteria in the International Classification of Headache Disorders IIIb, as well as classic findings, which although not part of the formal criteria are often suggestive of a particular diagnosis. At times, headache disorders can involve unusual symptoms that lack an identifiable secondary cause. This review will discuss some of these unusual symptoms, including headache associated auditory and olfactory symptoms, as well as two case reports involving gelastic migraine and migrainous thoracalgia.

Medication overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary headache characterized by frequent use of acute or symptomatic migraine medications at a sufficient frequency to transform patients from episodic to chronic migraine. MOH represents a significant medical problem, with a serious burden on patients' lives and on society as a whole. MOH patients often have additional comorbidities, and the clinical challenge of helping patients reduce acute medication use and revert to episodic headache can be marked. Treatment includes education and prevention; withdrawal programs; pharmacological prophylaxis; mul
