Behavioral interventions in health neuroscience.

Many chronic health concerns (obesity, addiction, stress, chronic pain, and depression) have garnered recent attention for their increasing frequency, intractability, and serious health consequences. Because they are often difficult to treat and there are not always effective pharmacological treatments, many patients are pursuing behavioral interventions for these conditions. Experimental behavioral intervention studies have shown some efficacy for health, but the mechanisms for these treatments are not well understood. Health neuroscience is a burgeoning field that seeks to link neural functi

Socioeconomic Disparities in Health Behaviors.

The inverse relationships between socioeconomic status (SES) and unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition have been well demonstrated empirically but encompass diverse underlying causal mechanisms. These mechanisms have special theoretical importance because disparities in health behaviors, unlike disparities in many other components of health, involve something more than the ability to use income to purchase good health. Based on a review of broad literatures in sociology, economics, and public health, we classify explanations of higher smoking, lower e

Does online health information seeking act like a health behavior?: a test of the behavioral model.

OBJECTIVE: This analysis tests the hypothesis that health information search can be modeled using the behavioral model, a tool traditionally used for other healthcare behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Pew Internet and American Life August 2006 Survey was used to model five selected Internet health information seeking behaviors: information on a specific disease, diet and nutrition, mental health, complementary and alternative medicine, and sexual health. Each behavior was modeled using hierarchical logistic regression with independent variables of predisposing factors (age, race, sex, and

Cumulative abuse experiences, physical health and health behaviors.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to investigate the complex relationship between a range of lifetime abuse experiences with current physical health and health behaviors. METHODS: Between October 1998 and May 1999, interviews were conducted with 557 ethnically diverse women seen at two urban primary care centers. Seven forms of abuse were measured: childhood physical and sexual abuse, past physical and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV), and recent emotional, physical, and sexual IPV. Severity was measured for six of these forms. Multiple non-specific physical symptoms were measured with a modifie

How they are making it work: Behavioral health consultant perspectives on the integration of behavioral health into primary care.

PURPOSE: Integrated behavioral health (IBH) embeds behavioral health services into primary care settings. Despite evidence of its cost and clinical effectiveness, IBH has had limited widespread implementation. As on-the-ground providers, it is important to understand how behavioral health consultants (BHCs) perceive the state of IBH implementation and to identify key strategies they use to overcome IBH implementation challenges. METHOD: We conducted qualitative, in-depth interviews with 10 BHCs in different care settings in New Jersey. Interviewees were identified using purposeful, snowball s

Health behaviors and health care utilization of southern lesbians.

PURPOSE: Lesbian women are more likely to experience negative physical and mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual women, although most research on this population has relied on small convenience samples. This study compared health behaviors and health care utilization among lesbian women living in the South to representative subsamples of women from the general population. METHODS: We conducted a Web-based survey of 1,141 self-identified lesbian women aged 19 and older living in the South. We compared descriptive results from our study to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pr

Behavior change, health, and health disparities 2019: Opioids, tobacco, and treatment adherence.

This Special Issue of Preventive Medicine (PM) is the 6th in a series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This is a topic of critical importance to improving U.S. population health. There is broad consensus that personal behavior patterns or lifestyle such as substance abuse, physical inactivity/obesity, and non-adherence with medical regimens are among the most important modifiable causes of chronic disease, premature death and population health. Hence, effectively promoting health-related behavior change needs to be a key component of health care research and policy. In this

Health Behavior Change and Complementary Medicine Use: National Health Interview Survey 2012.

Background and objectives: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use has been associated with preventive health behaviors. However, the role of CAM use in patients' health behaviors remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the extent to which patients report that CAM use motivates them to make changes to their health behaviors. Materials and Methods: This secondary analysis of 2012 National Health Interview Survey data involved 10,201 CAM users living in the United States who identified up to three CAM therapies most important to their health. Analyses assessed the extent to which

Disclosing Health and Health Behavior Information between Living Donors and Their Recipients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Living donor guidelines-both national and international-either do not address or are vague about what information can be shared between prospective living donors and transplant candidates, as well as when to make such disclosures and who should make them. This study explored the attitudes of donors and recipients regarding how much information they believe should be shared. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: Two Email invitations were sent by the National Kidney Foundation (national headquarters) to its Email listservs, inviting members to participate in

Relationship of depressive symptoms to edentulousness, dental health, and dental health behavior.

We investigated the relationship of edentulousness, dental health, and dental health behavior to depressive symptoms in the 55-year-old population of Oulu (a medium-sized Finnish town), 780 of whom (78%) participated. The dental examination included an assessment of oral health status. Depressive symptoms were determined with the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSDS). The participants were also asked about their dental health behavior, smoking habits, health, life satisfaction, and factors related to their work. Depressive symptoms were associated with edentulousness among non-smoker men. W

Community health behavior change through computer network health promotion: preliminary findings from Stanford Health-Net.

Computer-based health education has been employed in many settings. However, data on resultant behavior change are lacking. A randomized, controlled, prospective study was performed to test the efficacy of Stanford Health-Net (Stanford, CA, U.S.A.) in changing community health behaviors. Graduate and undergraduate students (N = 1003) were randomly assigned to treatment and control conditions. The treatment group received access to Health-Net, a health promotion computer network emphasizing specific self-care and preventive strategies. Over a 4-month intervention period, 26% of the treatment gr

Health Disparities: A Perspective on Internal Migration and Health Behavior in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Natural hazards, poor socio-economic conditions, low literacy levels, and long-standing conflicts affect traditional gold miners in Sudan and contribute to multiple health vulnerabilities. An extensive survey reveals differential health risk among internal migrant miners leading to short-, medium-, and long-term health consequences and disparities. The need to identify determinants of health behavior and limited prior research on internal migrants involved in traditional gold mining in Sudan motivated this research. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential health disparities between in

Determining health information-seeking behavior of shoulder patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients today have access to an increasing number of health resources to guide medical decision making, including specialist health care providers, the Internet, friends, and family members. No prior studies, to our knowledge, have comprehensively explored health information-seeking behavior (HISB) for patients being managed for shoulder pain. OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective is to identify which health resources patients use and find helpful in a cohort of patients being either evaluated or managed for shoulder pain. With increased access to the Internet and its use, we also hop

Health risk behavior of youth in foster care.

PROBLEM: Many adolescent health problems are predominantly caused by risk behavior. Foster adolescents have disproportionately poor health; therefore, identification of risk behavior is critical. METHOD: Data from a larger study were analyzed to investigate the health risk behavior of 56 youth in foster care using the Child Health and Illness Profile-Adolescent Edition. FINDINGS: Data indicated that youth in foster care had some increased risk behavior when compared with a normative adolescent population. Younger adolescents and those in relative placement had less risky behavior. Risk behav

[Health care seeking behavior of children in Togo].

Epidemiological and anthropological studies were carried out in Togo on health seeking behavior for under 5 children to determine causes of dysfunctions in health services. This article reports on the main findings of the anthropological study. Anthropological literature on health seeking behavior has identified labeling and associated explanatory models of illness as important factors for making choices in the use of health services. This study, carried out among 100 families in Togo on health seeking behavior for under-five children, found little difference in the signs and symptoms of illne
