Using the health belief model to predict breast self examination among Saudi women.

BACKGROUND: In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, breast cancer (BC) usually presents at advanced stages and more frequently in young pre-menopausal women in comparison to western countries. There is controversy surrounding the efficacy of breast self examination (BSE) for early detection of BC in countries where other methods are available. This study aims to explore the perception towards breast cancer and towards BSE among Saudi women, using the Health Belief Model (HBM). METHODS: A convenient sample of adult Saudi female employees, working at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (n

Utility of the health belief model to assess predictors of rabies preventive measures.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is a fatal zoonotic viral disease that is spread to people through animal bites. Around 35,000-50,000 individuals worldwide die of rabies each year, of which more than 99% of deaths occur in the developing countries. Since legislative actions does not appear to have been effective in reducing the incidence and severity of the bites in some developed countries, it seems public education is key to reducing animal bites. For effective education, understanding factors affecting the preventive and protective behaviors based on appropriate health behavior change models is import

Predicting participation in premarital prevention programs: the health belief model and social norms.

The development of effective programs to prevent marital dysfunction has been a recent focus for marital researchers, but the effective dissemination of these programs to engaged couples has received relatively little attention. The purpose of this study is to determine which factors predict couples' participation in premarital counseling. Predictive factors were derived from the health prevention literature, with a particular focus on the health belief model (HBM). Couples' beliefs and attitudes about premarital counseling were assessed at least six months before their wedding, and participat

Psychological predictors of diabetic ketoacidosis in children: Health belief model-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) remains a serious and potentially preventable complication among children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), particularly in Saudi Arabia. Psychological constructs such as perceived severity and susceptibility influence health behaviour, yet their role in pediatric diabetes management remains underexplored. AIM: To examine psychological predictors of DKA in children with T1DM using the health belief model, and to assess the role of caregiver-perceived understanding in influencing adherence and DKA occurrence. METHODS: A case-control study was conduc

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health problem, including in Indonesia, with East Lombok as a high prevalence region. Although control programmes have been implemented, TB cases remain high. Patient behaviours that are less supportive of treatment, such as non-compliance and social stigma, pose a challenge to TB control efforts in this area. This study aims to explore the behaviour of people with tuberculosis (TB) in East Lombok using the Health Belief Model (HBM) approach. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: The method applied was a cross-sectional design, involving 112 respondents with TB
