Community Coalition Building and Human-Centered Design Strategies to Advance Homeless Health Systems: A Case Study from Rural North Carolina.

In Burke County, North Carolina, a Hepatitis A outbreak among unsheltered residents exposed gaps in access to clinic-based care and prompted early, ad hoc "backpack medicine" outreach efforts to deliver care directly in nontraditional settings. While this approach addressed immediate needs, it highlighted the inadequacy of isolated interventions, prompting local partners to pursue more structured, coordinated, and community-driven approaches to homeless health system design. This project report describes how Burke County Public Health, in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Ch

FIGIJ Advocacy Statement on Climate Change.

Climate change is an escalating global crisis that disproportionately threatens the health and rights of children and adolescents, with girls facing particularly heightened vulnerability. Increasing temperatures, extreme weather events, food and water insecurity, and exposure to environmental toxins directly and indirectly affect sexual and reproductive health. These impacts include altered timing of menarche, worsened dysmenorrhea, increased risks of subfertility and pregnancy complications, and reduced access to essential reproductive health services. Broader climate-related instability furt

The North Country on the Job Network: a unique role for occupational health nurses in a community coalition.

1. Through a community based program, nurses were hired by a rural medical center to facilitate care for injured workers in the community. This placed the nurses outside the industrial and insurance arenas. 2. Rapid access to care and expedited return to work were made possible largely through improved communication, facilitated by the nurse case coordinators, among all involved parties (i.e., workers, employers, health care providers, insurance carriers). 3. The program provides access to occupational health nurses, or case managers, to a large number of rural workers--many of whom work for s

Improving Depression Care for Adults With Serious Mental Illness in Underresourced Areas: Community Coalitions Versus Technical Support.

OBJECTIVE: Community Partners in Care (CPIC) was a group-randomized study of two approaches to implementing expanded collaborative depression care: Community Engagement and Planning (CEP), a coalition approach, and Resources for Services (RS), a technical assistance approach. Collaborative care networks in both arms involved health care and other agencies in five service sectors. This study examined six- and 12-month outcomes for CPIC participants with serious mental illness. METHODS: This secondary analysis focused on low-income CPIC participants from racial-ethnic minority groups with serio

Practices to improve transitions of care: a national perspective.

Improving transitions of care has significant importance to our health care system. While care transitions has been studied and researched by many individuals over the past 20 years, more work is needed to further improve the process. Those beginning to focus on transitions need not begin from scratch, but can use information and research from national and regional collaborative models, as well as other tools and resources to enhance the quality of transitions programs.

Elevating physical activity as a public health priority: creation of the National Society of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has emerged as a distinct area of public health practice. As this field evolved, the need for a professional organization for physical activity practitioners in public health became evident. A collaboration of several existing public health professional organizations formed to address this new area of public health practice. The collaboration laid the foundation to establish a professional organization. National Association of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health (NSPAPPH) was launched in April 2006. NSPAPPH accomplishments to date include convening a

Umoja Health: Building Community Coalitions to Achieve Health Equity From COVID-19 to Cancer.

Umoja Health (UH) is a community-led approach to address long-standing disparities in health. UH was founded in 2020 at the request of members of the University of California, San Francisco Cancer Center Community Advisory Board. UH started with a focus on COVID-19 testing in San Francisco Bay Area Black/African American communities and evolved to address chronic disease and cancer in diverse communities. We detail UH's approach to addressing the separation between public health and health care, highlighting the coalition's effects on local health equity. (Am J Public Health. 2026;116(3):312-3

Local coalitions for coordinating services to children dependent on technology and their families.

The emerging population of children who are technology dependent has made a significant impact on the health care service system in the last decade. The unique characteristics and numerous unmet needs of this group of children engender grassroots planning to improve the responsiveness and coordination of the service system. A description of three local planning initiatives is presented within the framework of a collaborative statewide planning effort surrounding the needs of children who are technology dependent and their families.

Formalizing Partnerships: How Regional Coalitions in Sexual Health Can Address the Sexually Transmitted Infection Epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates continue to increase nationally, with more STIs diagnosed outside of traditional STI clinics. Collective impact groups that harness the power of collaboration among diverse community stakeholders have had demonstrated success in supporting local efforts in HIV prevention and addressing specific community gaps. We describe the efforts of 2 jurisdictional collective impact groups, the St. Louis STI Regional Response Coalition (STIRR) and the Denver Metro STI Coalition (DMSC), to combat their regional STI epidemics. METHODS: Both STIRR and D

Psychosocial information sharing to improve equity in kidney transplant evaluation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Increasing transplant access overall and particularly among historically underserved and marginalized patient groups is a shared goal nationwide. Patient challenges with psychosocial factors, such as social support and health literacy, are recognized as among the top reasons patients may not be referred, evaluated, or waitlisted, key steps along the pathway to transplantation. Yet referring providers' (e.g., dialysis clinics') and transplant centers' processes for measuring, communicating about, and addressing patients' psychosocial challenges are inconsistent, can emphasize

Mobile addiction treatment and harm reduction services as tools to address health inequities: a community case study of the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center mobile unit.

Opioid overdose deaths continue to increase in the US. Recent data show disproportionately high and increasing overdose death rates among Black, Latine, and Indigenous individuals, and people experiencing homelessness. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) can be lifesaving; however, only a fraction of eligible individuals receive them. Our goal was to describe our experience promoting equitable MOUD access using a mobile delivery model. We implemented a mobile MOUD unit aiming to improve equitable access in Brockton, a racially diverse, medium-sized city in Massachusetts. Brockton has a

Coalition of Faith Leaders, Community Organizations, and Governmental Organizations to Implement a COVID-19 Campaign in a Latino Neighborhood, Baltimore, Maryland, 2020-2021.

The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on low-income Latinos with limited access to health care services prompted the expansion of community-based COVID-19 services. From June 25, 2020, to May 20, 2021, we established a coalition of faith leaders, community organizations, and governmental organizations to implement a Spanish-language hotline and social media campaign that linked people to a COVID-19 testing site at a local church in a high-density Latino neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. This retrospective analysis compared the characteristics of Latinos accessing testing in community vers

2014 Female Athlete Triad Coalition consensus statement on treatment and return to play of the female athlete triad: 1st International Conference held in San Francisco, CA, May 2012, and 2nd International Conference held in Indianapolis, IN, May 2013.

The Female Athlete Triad is a medical condition often observed in physically active girls and women, and involves 3 components: (1) low energy availability with or without disordered eating, (2) menstrual dysfunction, and (3) low bone mineral density. Female athletes often present with 1 or more of the 3 Triad components, and an early intervention is essential to prevent its progression to serious endpoints that include clinical eating disorders, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. This consensus statement represents a set of recommendations developed following the first (San Francisco, California)

Decommodifying and Humanizing Health Care: Revisiting Pellegrino's Ethical Imperative.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points A quarter of a century since bioethicist Edmund Pellegrino warned about the commodification of health and health care, the problem has significantly worsened. Commodification of health and health care objectifies and dehumanizes people and undermines core concepts of holistic person-centered health, much less core human rights, including fulfillment of human potential and comprehensive health care. Multilevel sustained strategies and multisector coalitions are required to decommodify and humanize health and health care based on mental models, national and state polici

An Agenda to Support Care Partner Engagement through the Patient Portal.

Tools that help patients to digitally manage their health and health care have become increasingly important in recent years. The patient portal is the most well-established and widely used digital health tool through which patients may access their electronic medical record. Organizational efforts to promote awareness and use of the patient portal have primarily been directed at patients, yet millions of Americans with complex and costly health needs and disabilities manage their health with one or more care partners from among their family and friends. The presence and capacity of care partn

The Washtenaw ID Project: A Government-Issued ID Coalition Working Toward Social, Economic, and Racial Justice and Health Equity.

Introduction. The policing of identities through policies that restrict access to IDs issued by U.S. governmental entities disparately affects communities of color; communities who identify as low-income, immigrant, older, and/or transgender; and community members who experience chronic mental illness, housing instability, or incarceration. Yet government-issued IDs are increasingly needed to access health-promoting resources such as housing, banking, social services, and health care, and in interactions with law enforcement. Methods. Since 2012, the Washtenaw ID Project's coalition-building p

The political polarization of health outcomes in the USA.

Public health disparities provide an important lens for understanding social and political change in the USA. Using individual-level medical data and death records, this study shows that conservative Americans experienced worsening health and higher mortality than liberals during the 2010s. Here we find evidence consistent with two potential mechanisms. First, demographic realignment within political coalitions brought less healthy individuals into the conservative camp. Yet by the 2020s, demographic change, public policy and COVID-19 do not fully account for the widening gap in mortality rate
