Impact of a Health Information Technology Intervention on the Follow-up Management of Pulmonary Nodules.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the USA. The most common abnormalities suspicious for lung cancer on CT scan include pulmonary nodules. Recommendations to improve care for patients with pulmonary nodules require follow-up management. However, transitions in care, especially for patients undergoing transitions to ambulatory care sites from the emergency department (ED) and inpatient settings, can exacerbate failures in follow-up testing and compromise patient safety. We evaluate the impact of a discharge module that includes follow-up recommendations for further management

A glimpse into the future: a survey of the expectations and ambitions of Australian health information management students.

The future of the health information management profession is largely dependent on the ability of educational programs to attract high-caliber students who have a clear understanding of their future career when entering their course and who aspire to become active members of the profession after graduation. A sample of Australian health information management students was surveyed to obtain information about satisfaction with their career choice, employment options, and intended involvement in professional and postgraduate education activities. The survey looked for differences between the res

Livelihood pragmatism: Economic precarity and informal animal health management in rural Cambodia.

The emergence of zoonotic diseases is increasingly recognized as a critical global health threat, especially in rural Southeast Asia experiencing rapid socio-demographic and environmental changes. However, the socio-material and economic dimensions influencing spillover risks remain poorly understood by institutional health frameworks. This ethnographic study examines how economic precarity, environmental degradation, and inadequate veterinary services shape human-animal relations and animal health practices in three rural communities of Battambang province in Cambodia. Based on ethnographic o

Strengthening Urban Informal Trading and Improving the Health of Vendors: An Integrated Management Model.

CONTEXT: Within the urban areas, especially the central business districts, informal trading is growing in large numbers, and the informal vendor's health is also at risk. Despite various frameworks developed for this industry, there are few guidance and implementation strategies on how to accomplish better-managed informal trading, mostly one that entails better occupational settings. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the proposed model is to improve the working conditions for informal vendors in South Africa by redesigning the current informal trading management approach, thus ensuring a healthy workp

Managing multiple perspectives in the collaborative design process of a team health information technology.

We need to design technologies that support the work of health care teams; designing such solutions should integrate different clinical roles. However, we know little about the actual collaboration that occurs in the design process for a team-based care solution. This study examines how multiple perspectives were managed in the design of a team health IT solution aimed at supporting clinician information needs during pediatric trauma care transitions. We focused our analysis on four co-design sessions that involved multiple clinicians caring for pediatric trauma patients. We analyzed design se

Febrile illness in Asia: gaps in epidemiology, diagnosis and management for informing health policy.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence is becoming available on the aetiology and management of fevers in Asia; the importance of these fevers has increased with the decline in the incidence of malaria. AIMS: To conduct a narrative review of the epidemiology and management of fevers in South and South-East Asia and to highlight gaps in our knowledge that impair evidence-based health policy decisions. SOURCES: A narrative review of papers published since 2012 on developments in fever epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment in South and South-East Asia. The papers that the authors felt were pivotal, fr

Investing in health information management: The right people, in the right place, at the right time.

AIM: To describe the process adopted to review the academic curriculum for training health information management professionals in Nigeria. CONTEXT: Health information management professionals are responsible for managing patients' health service records and hospital information systems across health facilities in Nigeria. An assessment found many are inadequately skilled in information and communications technology (ICT) skills believed to be needed for them to play leadership roles in hospital information systems and function effectively. This was traced to a dearth of relevant ICT courses

Health Information Processing and Symptom Management in a Cross-Cultural Setting: Insights from IBD Patients.

The affordances of social media, have significantly transformed how patients seek and process health information online, including those with chronic diseases like irritable bowel disease (IBD). Few studies have explored how information processing may impact symptom management. Guided by social cognitive theory, this study investigates how Chinese and U.S. patients (N = 838) process health information in a cross-cultural setting and the impact on symptom management. It finds that efficient information processing improves treatment understanding and symptom management for IBD patients, regardle

Age at presentation and management of pediatric intussusception: A Pediatric Health Information System database study.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is uncommon in children older than 3 years, and use of enema reduction in older children is controversial. We sought to determine whether older children are at greater risk of requiring operative intervention and/or having pathology causing lead points, such that enema reduction should not be attempted. METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System database was reviewed from January 1, 2009-June 30, 2014. Patients were followed for 6 months from initial presentation or until bowel resection occurred. Successful enema reduction was defined as having radiologic re

Navigating Diabetes Management in the Digital Era: Scoping Review of Online Health Information-Seeking Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Online health information seeking (OHIS) has become a central component of chronic disease management within an increasingly interactive, algorithm-mediated digital ecosystem. For individuals with diabetes, ongoing self-management demands create sustained needs for accessible, actionable health information. Although prior reviews have described general information-seeking behaviors, few have integrated technological evolution, multilevel determinants, and equity considerations specific to diabetes. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review maps patterns of OHIS among individuals with diabete

Health management information system (HMIS) data verification: A case study in four districts in Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable Health Management and Information System (HMIS) data can be used with minimal cost to identify areas for improvement and to measure impact of healthcare delivery. However, variable HMIS data quality in low- and middle-income countries limits its value in monitoring, evaluation and research. We aimed to review the quality of Rwandan HMIS data for maternal and newborn health (MNH) based on consistency of HMIS reports with facility source documents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 76 health facilities (HFs) in four Rwandan districts. For 14 MNH data elemen

Health & Housing in Delaware:: Matching Medicaid Claims and Encounters and the Community Management Information System Databases.

This study draws upon data from two databases: claims and encounters that were reimbursed by the state's Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance (DMMA) and the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) database that collects homeless services data on individuals experiencing homelessness. Records from both sets are matched to identify 838 adults who both experienced homelessness and were Medicaid eligible in 2019, and to select, through propensity score matching, an equal set of control observations who were similarly Medicaid-eligible but had no record of homelessness. Outcomes are co

The biopsychosocial-spiritual impact upon health information managers from exposure to sensitive information within patient records: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Health Information Managers (HIMs) routinely work with patient records containing detailed accounts of illness, trauma and death. While the biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) impacts of trauma exposure have been widely documented among clinicians, little is known about the wellbeing of non-patient-facing health professionals who are repeatedly exposed to sensitive patient information. OBJECTIVE: To explore the BPSS impacts experienced by HIMs following exposure to information contained within patient records. METHOD: A qualitative study informed by grounded theory methodology was u

Breast Cancer Family History and Behavioral Health Intentions: An Esteem-Relevant Mechanism Informed by the Terror Management Health Model.

The terror management health model (TMHM) offers a framework to investigate how concerns about mortality can motivate health-related behaviors through actions that bolster self-esteem. This framework may be especially useful for examining how a family history of breast cancer influences preventative breast health behaviors. Women with no family history, a family history where a family member survived breast cancer, and those who lost a family member to the disease were recruited to participate in one of two preregistered online studies. Participants completed measures of perceived susceptibili
