Interdisciplinarity in health services research: dreams and nightmares, maladies and remedies.

Interdisciplinarity has become popular in health services research. Advocates suggest that interdisciplinary approaches may produce more accessible, applicable, exciting and realistic knowledge than traditional disciplinary approaches. To date, there has been surprisingly little analysis of the institutional and intellectual demands of interdisciplinarity as a methodology or practice. This paper (1) identifies some basic intellectual and institutional features of interdisciplinary research, (2) describes typical interdisciplinary 'dreams' and corresponding 'nightmares' that researchers might e

Consumer involvement in health service research: a cross-sectional survey of staff in an Australian public hospital and health service.

Objective Consumer involvement is when patients (their families, friends, and caregivers) work with researchers on research projects. While health services are expected to support consumer-researcher collaborations, conducive environments still need to be developed, with limited research into how Australian health services support this practice. This study explores current consumer involvement in research activity and staff perceptions at an Australian tertiary hospital and health service. Methods Research-active employees at a health service were invited to participate in an online cross-sect

Lived Experience, Research Leadership, and the Transformation of Mental Health Services: Building a Researcher Pipeline.

In recent years, investment in participatory research methods within mental health services research has grown. Participatory efforts are often limited in scope, however, and attention to research leadership is largely absent from discourse about stakeholder involvement in the United States. This Open Forum calls for investment in building a pipeline of researchers with significant psychiatric disabilities and intersecting lived experiences frequently studied in public sector services research, including homelessness, incarceration, comorbid health problems, structural racism, and poverty. The use of deliberative dialogue in health services research: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Deliberative Dialogue (DD) is a structured participatory approach that brings together research evidence, professional expertise, and lived/living experience to support informed discussion and decision-making in health research. DD is increasingly used in the co-design, co-implementation, and co-evaluation of health-promoting interventions, where decisions must be both evidence-informed and responsive to local contexts, priorities, and needs. However, published studies vary considerably in how DD is described and reported, particularly in relation to facilitation, evidence use, p

Long term care planning for cancer survivors: a health services research agenda.

INTRODUCTION: The recent Institute of Medicine report From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition recommended that 'survivorship care plans' be created for patients as they complete primary therapy for cancer in order to ensure clarity for all involved about patients' diagnoses, treatment received, and plan for surveillance. It should explicitly identify the providers responsible for each aspect of ongoing care, and provide information on resources available for psychosocial and other practical issues that may arise as a result of the prior cancer diagnosis. The IOM stated that

Health Services Professionals Endorse Omitting Some Research Information Under Limited Circumstances: Survey.

In an era of polarization, misinformation, and declining public trust in experts, effective public communication about health research is essential for disseminating evidence and maintaining the credibility of the research enterprise. Yet when communicating research findings to general audiences, experts face dilemmas about whether to omit information to avoid public confusion, to prevent the stigmatization of marginalized constituencies, or to keep information from being weaponized against vulnerable groups. Drawing on a national survey of health services professionals conducted in April and

Enhancing Access to Mental Health Services for Antepartum and Postpartum Women Through Telemental Health Services at Wellbeing Centers in Selected Health Facilities in Bangladesh: Implementation Research.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 10% of pregnant women and 13% of postpartum women experience mental disorders. In Bangladesh, nearly 50% of mothers face common mental disorders, but mental health services and trained professionals to serve their needs are scarce. To address this, the government of Bangladesh's Non-Communicable Disease Control program initiated "Wellbeing Centers," telemental health services in selected public hospitals. OBJECTIVE: This study examines implementation outcomes, including adoption, accessibility, acceptability, feasibility, usefulness, need, experience, perception, and exp

Understanding research priorities in home health care: a topic modeling analysis of the health services literature.

BACKGROUND: Home health care (HHC) has become vital amid global aging, rising chronic disease burdens, and shifts toward community-based care. Yet, research priorities remain fragmented. This study aimed to map the evolution of HHC scholarship and identify emerging and underexplored themes. METHODS: We analyzed 39,548 PubMed-indexed HHC publications (1952-April 2025) using Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling. A hybrid Konstanz Information Miner-Python workflow supported preprocessing, parameter optimization, and topic extraction. Model performance was assessed with perplexity, coherenc

Vaccination coverage in immunosuppressed patients: results of a regional health services research study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic inflammatory diseases are at elevated risk of infections that can be prevented by vaccination. This elevated risk is due not just to these patients' primary illnesses, but also to the immunosuppressive treatment that they often receive. We studied the vaccination rate in a random sample of patients with two types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), namely, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In particular, we asked unvaccinated patients why they had re-fused the vaccine. METHODS: From April to September 2009, we gave a 38-item questionnaire to 203 consec

Involving Knowledge Users in Health Services Research: Collective Reflections and Learning From a National Evaluation of Recurrent Miscarriage Services.

INTRODUCTION: Involving knowledge users in research can facilitate the translation of evidence into policy and practice. How to best involve and support various types of knowledge users, including patient and public involvement contributors, in research is an identified knowledge gap. We conducted a national evaluation of recurrent miscarriage care supported by a Research Advisory Group (convened in March 2020) comprising a range of knowledge users, including parent advocates and people involved in the management/provision of services. The Group met virtually nine times, and actively collabora

The PRAMS study (Perinatal Redesign for Accessing Mental Health Services): a research protocol.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health (PMH) problems affect 10-20% of women and birthing people during pregnancy and the postnatal year, costing the UK an estimated £8.1 billion annually. Underserved groups - including women and birthing people from minority ethnic groups, deprived areas, and those facing multiple disadvantages - experience the greatest inequalities in access and outcomes. Despite national investment, many fall between primary care (general practice, NHS Talking Therapies) and specialist PMH services, with limited guidance on bridging this gap. AIM: To co-design an experience-b

Framework for Successful Integration of Health Services Research Into a Breast Imaging Career.

Health services research (HSR) is a multidisciplinary field of inquiry that examines how health care is structured, providing valuable data on health care outcomes and delivery. Over the past few decades, a shift in the U.S. health care system toward value-based care has placed a priority on health services topics. Health services research has been central to the evolution of breast imaging over this period, with increased emphasis placed on the following: (1) design of appropriate-use criteria for imaging services; (2) determination of cost-effectiveness of imaging protocols and screening reg

The Current Status of Research on the Integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Services.

Integration of services for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV has been widely promoted globally in the belief that both clients and health providers benefit through improvements in quality, efficient use of resources, and lower costs, helping to maximize limited health resources and provide comprehensive client-centered care. This article builds on the growing body of research on integrated sexual SRH and HIV services. It brings together critical reviews on issues within the wider SRH and rights agenda and synthesizes recent research on integrated services, drawing on the Integra In
