Exploring Oral Health Disparities in the 2022 BRFSS: The Impact of Rural/Urban Status and Adverse Childhood Experiences.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between rural/urban status, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and oral health outcomes, specifically focusing on inadequate dental visits and significant tooth loss. METHODS: Data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), including 79,571 U.S adults from 12 states, was analyzed. Inadequate dental visits were defined as having last visited a dentist more than one year ago. Significant tooth loss was defined as the loss of six or more permanent teeth due to decay or gum disease. Multivariable logistic regression models were appl

The Role of Socioeconomic Status in Latino Health Disparities Among Youth with Type 1 Diabetes: a Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) incidence is growing faster among Latino than non-Latino White youth, but ethnic disparities in self-management behaviors and HbA1c are unclear. Socioeconomic status (SES) is a key factor in T1D, which may confound or contribute to disparities in Latino pediatric T1D management. A systematic review examined whether ethnic differences in pediatric T1D outcomes occur and are independent of socioeconomic status (SES). RECENT FINDINGS: Latino youth displayed lower self-management and higher HbA1c in approximately half of the identified studies prior to inc

Evaluating the role of survivorship care plans in modifying disparities in health status among female cancer survivors in Maryland.

PURPOSE: To determine if receipt of survivorship care plans (SCPs) modifies the association between health outcomes of female cancer survivors and sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: Using cross-sectional 2011-2023 data from the Maryland Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, we conducted survey-weighted multivariable regression models to estimate the association between race, body mass index (BMI), education and income with self-reported general health status and poor physical and mental health days, stratified by SCP receipt, approximated as self-reporting receipt

Socioeconomic status and health disparities drive differences in accelerometer-derived physical activity in fatty liver disease and significant fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The cornerstone of clinical management of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity (PA) aimed at improving cardiometabolic risk. To inform NAFLD prevention and treatment guidelines we aimed to: (i) quantify the role of PA on lowering the risk for NAFLD and fibrosis; (ii) characterize NAFLD and fibrosis association with PA in the context of socioeconomic environment. METHODS: A sample of 2648 participants from the NHANES 2003-2006 was selected to develop survey weighted multivariable logistic regressi

Insurance status and health-related quality-of-life disparities after trauma: results from a nationally representative survey in the US.

PURPOSE: To determine whether insurance status modifies the association between injuries and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS: This is a longitudinal, observational study using the pooled 2000-2006 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). A total of 50,225 adults (age ≥ 18) with or without injuries were included in the study. HRQOL was evaluated using the EuroQoL Health Index (EQ-5D), visual analog scale (VAS), and the SF-12 physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS). A categorical variable of injury-insura

Dual-eligible, dual-risk? A brief review on the impact of dual-eligible status on health disparities and peripheral artery disease.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been associated with poorer outcomes based on particular social determinants of health, including insurance status. A unique population to study treatment outcomes related to PAD is those with dual-eligible status-those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid-comprising more than 12 million people. We performed a systematic review of the literature surrounding dual-eligible patients and impact on PAD, with final inclusion of six articles. Dual eligibility has been associated with higher rates of comorbidities; more severe symptoms at initial presentation

Immigration status-related exclusive e-cigarette use and cannabis use and their dual use disparities associated with mental health disorder symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarette and cannabis use has been linked to various health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Yet, extant knowledge about the risk factors for exclusive and dual use of e-cigarettes and cannabis is limited, especially among immigrants. We examined exclusive e-cigarette and cannabis use and their dual use associated with mental health disorders among immigrants and U.S.-born. METHODS: We analyzed national cross-sectional data collected between May 13, 2021, and January 9, 2022, among adults aged >18 years (n= 4766) living in U.S. Multinomial logistic

Influence of racial disparities on patient-reported satisfaction and short- and long-term perception of health status after elective lumbar spine surgery.

OBJECTIVE In spine surgery, racial disparities have been shown to impact various aspects of surgical care. Previous studies have associated racial disparities with inferior surgical outcomes, including increased complication and 30-day readmission rates after spine surgery. Recently, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and satisfaction measures have been proxies for overall quality of care and hospital reimbursements. However, the influence that racial disparities have on short- and long-term PROs and patient satisfaction after spine surgery is relatively unknown. The aim of this study was to inv

Effects of health disparities on survival after neonatal heart surgery: why should racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic status be included in the risk analysis?

Health disparities are "differences in the quality of health and health care across different populations." Potential disparities associated with race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status should be considered when attempting to develop models for survival and neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates undergoing congenital heart surgery. Each of the aforementioned sociodemographic factors is related to postsurgical mortality because they are frequently linked to measures of access to care in addition to location of care (geographically) and the type of institution (teaching vs. nonteachin

Hospital-level variation in angina and mortality at 1 year after myocardial infarction: insights from the Translational Research Investigating Underlying Disparities in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients' Health Status (TRIUMPH) Registry.

BACKGROUND: Despite calls to expand measurement of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) outcomes to include symptom burden, little has been done to describe hospital-level variation in this patient-centered outcome, or its association with mortality. Understanding the relationship between symptoms and longer-term mortality could inform the importance of these outcomes for monitoring quality of care. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 4316 patients with AMI treated at 24 hospitals participating in the Translational Research Investigating Underlying Disparities in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients' Hea

Failure to reassess ejection fraction after acute myocardial infarction in potential implantable cardioverter/defibrillator candidates: insights from the Translational Research Investigating Underlying disparities in acute Myocardial infarction Patients' Health Status (TRIUMPH) registry.

BACKGROUND: Current practice guidelines advocate delaying assessment of primary prevention implantable cardioverter/defibrillator (ICD) candidacy at least 40 days after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) because early ICD implantation after AMI has not demonstrated survival benefit. The rate at which interval reassessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) occurs in potential primary prevention ICD candidates is unknown. METHODS: We examined patients with AMI in the TRIUMPH registry with inhospital LVEF <40% discharged alive after their index presentation, excluding patients with

Turning Structures Into Attributes: The Marginalisation of Critical Theory in Research on Social Determinants of Health.

Critical theory has provided important resources for understanding the social determinants of health (SDOH). Yet less is known about what happens to these explanatory resources as SDOH becomes increasingly institutionalised in research and policy. We examine this question through a scoping review of 298 peer-reviewed SDOH reviews published between 2005 and 2025, together with a close analysis of the 15 reviews with the highest annualised Web of Science citation rates. The findings show a pronounced and widening discursive asymmetry: mainstream, technically oriented reviews dominate the literat

From exposure to embedding: how interconnected social determinants drive health inequalities-a complex adaptive system dynamics approach.

The social determinants of health (SDOH)-including socioeconomic position, education, housing, and social networks-are fundamental drivers of health inequalities worldwide. These inequalities persist because social determinants interact dynamically across time and context, with health emerging from the interplay of social, political, environmental, and biological processes in which determinants act simultaneously as causes and consequences. Early-life exposures and historical conditions produce enduring physiological vulnerability through biological embedding, encompassing stress dysregulation
