Healthy Aging: Strategies to Slow the Process.

Aging, an ever-present process, is a part of every living organism's life cycle. Gerontology, the study of the biological, social, psychological aspects of aging, is a field that has been around since the 1930s, when the human inquiry into aging began to emerge. Aging can be characterized by the external changes, wrinkles, graying of the hair, among other changes, and lesser-seen but still important changes, presbycusis, arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, sarcopenia, and more. There is a strong drive to uncover as much as we can about the process of aging and the ways to delay

MRI of healthy brain aging: A review.

We present a review of the characterization of healthy brain aging using MRI with an emphasis on morphology, lesions, and quantitative MR parameters. A scope review found 6612 articles encompassing the keywords "Brain Aging" and "Magnetic Resonance"; papers involving functional MRI or not involving imaging of healthy human brain aging were discarded, leaving 2246 articles. We first consider some of the biogerontological mechanisms of aging, and the consequences of aging in terms of cognition and onset of disease. Morphological changes with aging are reviewed for the whole brain, cerebral corte

Centenarians as a model for healthy aging.

For over 10 years we have studied centenarians as a model to address the biological basis of aging and longevity, with particular attention to immunology and genetics. The most important findings can be summarized as follows. (i) Human immunosenescence represents a complex remodelling, whereby clonotypical immunity deteriorates, while ancestral, innate immunity is largely preserved. (ii) Continuous exposure to antigens causes a lifelong, chronic antigenic stress, which is responsible, together with the involution of the thymus, for the accumulation of memory/effector T cells and the exhaustion

Physical Fitness, Biological Aging, and Healthy Longevity.

OBJECTIVES: Physical fitness, particularly cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscle strength, is associated with reduced disease risk. However, its combined association with biological aging in promoting healthy longevity remains unanswered. We investigated whether cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscle strength could modify the prospective associations between accelerated biological aging and premature termination of healthy longevity. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This study included 46,481 UK Biobank participants. METHODS: CRF was estimated via

Healthy Aging Interventions Reduce Repetitive Element Transcripts.

Transcripts from noncoding repetitive elements (REs) in the genome may be involved in aging. However, they are often ignored in transcriptome studies on healthspan and lifespan, and their role in healthy aging interventions has not been characterized. Here, we analyze REs in RNA-seq datasets from mice subjected to robust healthspan- and lifespan-increasing interventions including calorie restriction, rapamycin, acarbose, 17-α-estradiol, and Protandim. We also examine RE transcripts in long-lived transgenic mice, and in mice subjected to a high-fat diet, and we use RNA-seq to investigate the in

[Selenium and zinc: "antioxidants" for healthy aging?].

Selenium and zinc are essential trace elements and an inadequate dietary intake has been implicated in the decline of immune and cognitive functions in aged persons and in the pathogenesis of age-related disorders. Both micronutrients are often marketed as "antioxidants" in mineral supplements; however, neither selenium nor zinc are antioxidants per se but they may exert beneficial effects as components of enzymes and other proteins that catalyze redox reactions and/or are involved in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. According to epidemiological data older individuals have an increased ri

Gut microbiome and healthy aging in HIV: data from the correlates of healthy aging in geriatric HIV (CHANGE HIV) cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Despite longer life expectancies, those aging with HIV experience increased comorbidity and other health challenges relative to the general population. Alterations in the composition of the gut microbiome are associated with increased immune activation and aging, but few studies have explored the association of the gut microbiome with adverse age-related outcomes in people living with HIV. We assessed the relationship between gut microbiome composition and healthy aging in HIV. DESIGN/METHODS: The CHANGE HIV study is a Canadian cohort of people aged 65 and older, which aims to inv

Frailty and menopause: A gateway to healthy aging.

Frailty is a clinical state arising from the progressive erosion of physiological reserves across multiple systems, resulting in heightened vulnerability to stressors and an increased risk of adverse health outcomes. Strategies to promote healthy aging may benefit from the early identification of frailty and the implementation of targeted interventions aimed at mitigating or potentially reversing this condition. Interest in frailty within the context of women's health stems from epidemiological evidence indicating that women have a higher risk of developing frailty than men. Moreover, menopaus

Oral health and healthy aging: A multiregional review.

Oral health is a critical determinant of overall well-being and healthy aging, especially in countries with growing older populations and health disparities. Maintaining healthy teeth, gums, and orofacial structures improves the quality of life (QoL) while simultaneously reducing the risk associated with several non-communicable diseases through modifying shared risk factors and controlling inflammation. Oral diseases, such as dental caries and periodontal issues, affect nearly 903 million people in Southeast Asia (SEA), with a 61.4% increase in their prevalence from 1990 to 2019. Poor oral he

Amino acid neurotransmitters in sarcopenia and healthy aging.

Sarcopenia is the age-related degeneration of skeletal muscle. Healthy skeletal muscle secretes metabolites and macromolecules that are systemically important for the immune system (e.g. myokines) and the central nervous system (e.g. BDNF). Exercise interventions to stimulate skeletal muscle are therapeutic for sarcopenia and limit risk and/or provide neuroprotection in neurodegenerative disease models. Metabolic analysis of aged skeletal muscle has identified altered skeletal muscle metabolomes at an old age. Many of the molecules identified are amino acids that also act as neurotransmitters.

Impaired sensitivity to spatial configurations in healthy aging.

Healthy aging is associated with decline in social, emotion, and identity perception, which is frequently attributed to deterioration of structures involved in social inference. It is believed that this decline is unlikely to be a result of perceptual aberrations due to intact (corrected) visual acuity. Nevertheless, the present studies examine whether more particular perceptual aberrations may be present in healthy aging, that could in principle contribute to such difficulties. The present study examined the possibility that particular deficits in configural processing impair the perception o

Sensorimotor Synchronization in Healthy Aging and Neurocognitive Disorders.

Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS), the coordination of physical actions in time with a rhythmic sequence, is a skill that is necessary not only for keeping the beat when making music, but in a wide variety of interpersonal contexts. Being able to attend to temporal regularities in the environment is a prerequisite for event prediction, which lies at the heart of many cognitive and social operations. It is therefore of value to assess and potentially stimulate SMS abilities, particularly in aging and neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), to understand intra-individual communication in the later sta

Essential oils and functional herbs for healthy aging.

As total life expectancy increases, the prevalence of age-related diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease is also increasing. Many hypotheses about Alzheimer's disease have been developed, including cholinergic neuron damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter in the brain and cholinergic deficits leads to cognitive dysfunction and decline. Recent studies have linked diabetes as a risk factor in developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The incidence of patients with type II diabetes and increased levels and activity of α-a

Dancing for Healthy Aging: Functional and Metabolic Perspectives.

CONTEXT: Dancing has been used as a form of exercise to improve functional and metabolic outcomes during aging. The field lacks randomized, clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating metabolic outcomes related to dance interventions, but dancing may be a form of exercise that could induce positive effects on the metabolic health of older adults. However, primary studies seem very heterogonous regarding the trial designs, characteristics of the interventions, the methods for outcomes assessments, statistical powers, and methodological quality. OBJECTIVE: The current research team intended to review the

Indigenous perspectives on healthy aging in the Yukon.

The Canadian Frailty Network commissioned this study to gather feedback on the AVOID Frailty model from Indigenous Elders and older adults in the Yukon. Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies, Two-Eyed Seeing, and guided by an Elder co-author this study involved guide conversations to engage 42 participants aged 55 and older across four Yukon communities. Participants raised Activity, Interaction, and Diet spontaneously as central to healthy aging, while Vaccinate and Optimize medications typically required prompting. However, participants reframed these domains in relational and place-

From domains to mechanisms of healthy psychological aging.

Healthy psychological aging has been consistently linked to patterns of behavioral engagement across everyday life, including cognitive, physical, social, and nutritional activities, alongside sleep. However, these domains are typically studied in isolation and conceptualized as additive risk or protective factors, which provides limited insight into how their effects are instantiated and maintained over time. Here, we propose a unifying framework in which diverse behavioral domains converge on shared psychological and neurobiological mechanisms that organize behavior across contexts and the l

Healthy and premature aging of monocytes and macrophages.

Aging is associated with immunosenescence, a decline in immune functions, but also with inflammaging, a chronic, low-grade inflammation, contributing to immunosenescence. Monocytes and macrophages belong to the innate immune system and aging has a profound impact on these cells, leading to functional changes and most importantly, to the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and thereby contributing to inflammaging. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease and age is an important risk factor for developing RA. RA is associated with the early development of age-related co-morbidities

Influence of the Mediterranean Diet on Healthy Aging.

The life expectancy of the global population has increased. Aging is a natural physiological process that poses major challenges in an increasingly long-lived and frail population. Several molecular mechanisms are involved in aging. Likewise, the gut microbiota, which is influenced by environmental factors such as diet, plays a crucial role in the modulation of these mechanisms. The Mediterranean diet, as well as the components present in it, offer some proof of this. Achieving healthy aging should be focused on the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits that reduce the development of pathologi

Mitochondrial Dynamics: Coupling Mitochondrial Fitness with Healthy Aging.

Aging is associated with a decline in mitochondrial function and the accumulation of abnormal mitochondria. However, the precise mechanisms by which aging promotes these mitochondrial alterations and the role of the latter in aging are still not fully understood. Mitochondrial dynamics is a key process regulating mitochondrial function and quality. Altered expression of some mitochondrial dynamics proteins has been recently associated with aging and with age-related alterations in yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans, mice, and humans. Here, we review the link between alterations in mitochondrial dyn

Environmental and policy change to support healthy aging.

Given the growing evidence of the influence of the environment on older adult health, the need to design and implement effective environmental policy around healthy and vital aging is urgent. This article describes issues amenable to improvement through policy change, evidence supporting specific policy approaches and outcomes, and promising strategies for implementing those approaches. Key areas of focus are neighborhood design and safety, housing, transportation, and mobility. Strategies to build capacity for policy change are also addressed. Our goals are to foster greater attention to envi
