How a healthy lifestyle mediates socioeconomic inequities in healthy ageing and life expectancies: A 20-year cohort of older adults.

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with various adverse health outcomes, but its association with healthy ageing is less known, and whether adherence to a healthy lifestyle at late-life years can reduce socioeconomic disparities in health requires further investigation. In a 20-year cohort of 33,541 older adults aged ≥65 years across 23 provinces in China, we investigated socioeconomic disparities in mortality and unhealthy ageing considering physical, cognitive, mental, visual, and hearing functions, and evaluated whether adherence to a healthy lifestyle at late-life years can red

Healthy working life expectancy at age 50 for people with and without osteoarthritis in local and national English populations.

Retirement ages are rising in many countries to offset the challenges of population ageing, but osteoarthritis is an age-associated disease that is becoming more prevalent and may limit capacity to work until older ages. We aimed to assess the impact of osteoarthritis on healthy working life expectancy (HWLE) by comparing HWLE for people with and without osteoarthritis from ages 50 and 65 nationally and in a local area in England. Mortality-linked data for adults aged ≥ 50 years were used from six waves (2002-13) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and from three time points of the Nor

Associations of loneliness, social isolation and healthy lifestyle with life expectancy free of major physical disease and mental disorder.

Loneliness and social isolation are linked to higher risks of mortality and a range of adverse physical diseases and mental disorders, yet the extent to which they affect overall health and quality of life remains unclear. Here we show that loneliness and social isolation are more strongly associated with life expectancy free of mental disorder than with life expectancy free of physical disease. This study includes 277,489 adults from the UK Biobank who are initially free of seven major chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, neurodegenerative di

Behavioural risk factors and healthy life expectancy: evidence from two longitudinal studies of ageing in England and the US.

We examined whether the co-occurrence of four behavioural risk factors (alcohol consumption, smoking, physical inactivity and obesity) is associated with disability-free and chronic disease-free life expectancy similarly in two longitudinal studies of ageing in England and the United States. Data were from 17,351 individuals aged 50+ from the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and, 10,388 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), from 2002 to 2013. Disability-free life expectancy was estimated using repeat measures of limitations with instrumental activities and activities of dai

Trends of Healthy Life Expectancy of the Elderly in China in 1994-2015: Revisiting From the Perspective of Morbidity Transition.

Research on healthy life expectancy (HLE) in China has been fueled by a spate of new data sources and studies, yet no consensus is reached on the pattern of HLE changes and the underlying mechanism. This study examined the change of HLE in China over 20 years with long term national data. Health status, measured by activities of daily living, is combined with mortality to calculate the disability-free life expectancy by the Sullivan method. The results show that the HLE rose slower than life expectancy (LE) in 1994-2004, indicating morbidity expansion. However, in 2010-2015, the proportion of

Association between social participation and health status trajectories in older adults: A 19-year yamanashi healthy life expectancy cohort study (Y-HALE).

OBJECTIVE: Population aging highlights the importance of understanding social factors that promote healthy aging. We aimed to identify health status trajectories among older adults in Japan and determine social participation associated with each trajectory cluster. METHODS: Data from 497 older adults from Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, were used to identify their health status trajectories based on caregiving levels defined by the Japan's national care insurance system. We determined social participants associated with each trajectory cluster. RESULTS: Men aged 65-74 who worked and participate

Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for 306 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (HALE) for 188 countries, 1990-2013: quantifying the epidemiological transition.

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 (GBD 2013) aims to bring together all available epidemiological data using a coherent measurement framework, standardised estimation methods, and transparent data sources to enable comparisons of health loss over time and across causes, age-sex groups, and countries. The GBD can be used to generate summary measures such as disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) that make possible comparative assessments of broad epidemiological patterns across countries and time. These summary measures can also be used to qu

Measuring healthy life expectancy and determinants of poor perceived health: A population-based study among a subset of rare and common cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: As the survival proportions for rare cancers are on average worse than for common cancers, assessing the expected remaining life years in good health becomes highly relevant. This study aimed to estimate the healthy life expectancy (HLE) of a subset of rare and common cancer survivors, and to assess the determinants of poor perceived health in rare cancer survivors. METHODS: To calculate HLE, survival data from the population-based Netherlands Cancer Registry of survivors of a rare cancer (i.e., ovarian cancer, thyroid cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma) (n=21,376) and

Why healthy life expectancy estimates diverge: insights from survey-based, administrative, and model-based metrics across Japanese prefectures, 2001-2019: a comparative ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HALE) can be measured using different approaches, yet estimates may diverge. Understanding divergence sources could help identify which health dimensions current systems capture or miss. However, systematic subnational comparisons remain scarce. METHODS: We conducted a comparative ecological study across Japan's 47 prefectures from 2001 to 2019. Three Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) metrics-disability-free life expectancy based on activity limitation (DFLE-AL) and life expectancy in subjective health (LE-SH) derived from national surveys, and

Adherence to a healthy dietary pattern mitigates the detrimental associations between osteosarcopenic adiposity and both all-cause mortality and life expectancy: a cohort study.

Background and aims: To determine the associations between osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) and both all-cause mortality and life expectancy, and to investigate whether adherence to a healthy diet can modify these associations. Methods: Utilizing data obtained from 201 223 UK Biobank participants, we assessed body composition for OSA and a healthy diet score was used to assess dietary quality. Results: Compared to participants with no body composition abnormality, the adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of all-cause mortality for those with 1, 2, and 3 (OSA) abnormalities were 1.13 (1.08, 1.18), 1.28 (1.21,

The effect of healthy lifestyles and social determinants on independent life expectancy and sex differences in China: evidence from a 13-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Functional independence is the basis for healthy ageing and quality of late life. However, evidence on how healthy lifestyle factors and social determinants of health affect longevity in independence remains limited, particularly regarding sex differences. We aimed to examine the associations of these factors with life expectancy with and without dependency, and to assess whether such effects differ by sex. METHODS: This cohort study used data from the nationally representative Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study (CLHLS), which collected data from 2008 to 2021. Participan

Population-based estimates of healthy working life expectancy in England at age 50 years: analysis of data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

BACKGROUND: Retirement ages are rising in many countries to offset the challenges of population ageing, but people's capacity to work for more years in their later working life (>50 years) is unclear. We aimed to estimate healthy working life expectancy in England. METHODS: This analysis included adults aged 50 years and older from six waves (2002-13) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), with linked mortality data. Healthy working life expectancy was defined as the average number of years expected to be spent healthy (no limiting long-standing illness) and in paid work (employm

Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 315 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (HALE), 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HALE) and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) provide summary measures of health across geographies and time that can inform assessments of epidemiological patterns and health system performance, help to prioritise investments in research and development, and monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We aimed to provide updated HALE and DALYs for geographies worldwide and evaluate how disease burden changes with development. METHODS: We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 20

Early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer in workers was associated with reduced losses of healthy life expectancy and productivity: real-world evidence from Taiwan during 2010-2019.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the expected losses of life expectancy (LE), quality of life (QoL), lifetime employment duration (LED), and lifetime productivity (LP) among workers with oral cancer (OC) in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We linked five nationwide administrative databases in Taiwan and collected data on 22,908 pathologically verified OC workers from 2010 to 2019. Using a rolling algorithm, we estimated lifetime survival functions to obtain LEs. We abstracted each OC patient's employment status and insured salaries to estimate LEDs and LP. Using the EQ-5D-3L QoL questionnaire repeatedly

BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we drew from two widely used summary measures to monitor such changes in population health: disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE). We used these measures to track trends and benchmark progress compared with e
