Studies on hearing loss in a community with endemic cretinism in Central Java, Indonesia.

An audiometric study was carried out in a community of 642 subjects severly affected by endemic goitre and cretinism. Hearing loss was measured in 34 out of 41 subjects diagnosed as cretins, 92 normal subjects aged 5-20 years from the same community and 54 subjects (also of 5-20 years) living in a nearby control area without endemic goitre. The excess number of hearing defects in the endemic area seems to be entirely due to the process that leads to cretinism. There is no reason to describe deafness and deafmutism in an area with severe endemic goitre as a separate entity. The hearing defect s

[Spatial hearing in elderly people with mild or moderate chronic sensorineural hearing loss and central auditory processing disorders.].

The ability to localize stationary sources of speech and music allows for the organization of auditory attention and promotes successful communication and learning, while the ability to localize technical devices, especially moving ones, is of fundamental importance for life safety and professional suitability in some specialties. The aim of the study was to assess the state of spatial hearing in elderly and senile patients with chronic sensorineural hearing loss and central auditory processing disorders. A total of 39 patients aged 69±9 years were examined in the Audiology Department of the C

A case study of central processing following long-standing unilateral conductive hearing loss.

This single-subject study reported the audibility and speech-processing performance of a man who at age 22 had an impacted foreign body removed from the bony portion of his L ear canal, it having been there since about age 7. Otologic and audiologic assessment, records of failing school screening, and subject and family history agreed on an uncomplicated conductive hearing level of 30-40 db. Immediately on removing the block, audiograms and tympanograms were normal (HTL less than or equal to 20 db at .25-8 kc/s) and remained so for the 14 mo of the study. At 8 days and at 5 and 14 mo post-bloc

Hearing loss in Langerhans cell histiocytosis: close association with central nervous system consequences.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is a recognized permanent consequence (PC) of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). However, its characteristics and association with central nervous system (CNS)-related PCs remain unclear. PROCEDURE: This study retrospectively analyzed the data of 317 pediatric patients with multisystem or multifocal bone LCH enrolled in the Japan LCH Study Group -96 or -02 trial. RESULTS: Hearing loss was identified in nine patients (2.8%), a lower incidence than previously reported. It was significantly associated with ear lesions, but not with craniofacial bone involvement at the

Effects of conductive hearing loss on gerbil central auditory system activity in silence.

Animal models of conductive hearing loss (CHL) show altered structure and function in the central auditory system (CAS), particularly following unilateral deprivation. Assessment of neuronal activity as measured by 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake following CHL has been reported by two groups of investigators, with different findings. Woolf and colleagues [Brain Res. 274 (1983) 119] found that 2-DG uptake increased in the cochlear nucleus ipsilateral to the CHL, while Tucci et al. [Laryngoscope 109 (1999) 1359] found a decrease in 2-DG uptake in the ipsilateral cochlear nucleus. One significant di

Neonatal cochlear hearing loss results in developmental abnormalities of the central auditory pathways.

We have used animal models of long term neonatal cochlear hearing loss to study developmental plasticity of the central auditory pathways. Newborn chinchilla pups and feline kittens were treated with the ototoxic drug amikacin, so as to induce basal lesions in the cochlea. At maturity these animals were used in single unit electrophysiological mapping studies, in which the cochleotopic organization of primary auditory cortex (of the cat) and the inferior colliculus of the midbrain (in the chinchilla) were mapped. We have observed, both in the midbrain and auditory cortex, massive reorganizatio

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system: a neglected cause of sensorineural hearing loss.

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a rare, often unrecognized condition in which there is a deposition of intracellular and extracellular hemosiderin in the leptomeninges, subpial tissue, spinal cord, and cranial nerves as a result of chronic bleeding in the subarachnoid space. On the basis of our cases and a review of the literature, the majority of patients manifest sensorineural hearing loss in addition to cerebellar dysfunction, pyramidal tract signs, and progressive mental deterioration. Recent imaging techniques--particularly CT and MRI--can define the presence of iro

Effects of long-term non-traumatic noise exposure on the adult central auditory system. Hearing problems without hearing loss.

It is known that hearing loss induces plastic changes in the brain, causing loudness recruitment and hyperacusis, increased spontaneous firing rates and neural synchrony, reorganizations of the cortical tonotopic maps, and tinnitus. Much less in known about the central effects of exposure to sounds that cause a temporary hearing loss, affect the ribbon synapses in the inner hair cells, and cause a loss of high-threshold auditory nerve fibers. In contrast there is a wealth of information about central effects of long-duration sound exposures at levels ≤80 dB SPL that do not even cause a tempora

Central auditory processing in adults with chronic stroke without hearing loss: A magnetoencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke lesions in non-auditory areas may affect higher-order central auditory processing. We sought to characterize auditory functions in chronic stroke survivors with unilateral arm/hand impairment using auditory evoked responses (AERs) with lesion and perception metrics. METHODS: The AERs in 29 stroke survivors and 14 controls were recorded with single tones, active and passive frequency-oddballs, and a dual-oddball with pitch-contour and time-interval deviants. Performance in speech-in-noise, mistuning detection, and moving-sound detection was assessed. Relationships between AER

Central nervous system findings by magnetic resonance in children with profound sensorineural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution magnetic resonance studies are an important tool in the investigation of the etiology of childhood sensorineural hearing loss. An added benefit with magnetic resonance is the ability to screen the central nervous system for findings which may adversely affect the neurodevelopmental outcome of these children. OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of cases and significance of associated intracranial abnormalities as detected by central nervous system high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging in children with profound sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: Retrospe
