Improved Sensitivity of Digits-in-Noise Test to High-Frequency Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is most commonly observed at high frequencies. High-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) precedes and predicts hearing loss at lower frequencies. It was previously shown that an automated, self-administered digits-in-noise (DIN) test can be sensitized for detection of HFHL by low-pass filtering the speech-shaped masking noise at 1.5 kHz. This study was designed to investigate whether sensitivity of the DIN to HFHL can be enhanced further using low-pass noise filters with higher cutoff frequencies. DESIGN: The US-English digits 0 to 9, homogenized for audibility, were binaura

High Frequency Hearing Loss in Chronic Renal Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The fentanyl buccal tablet (FBT) is formulated to enhance the rate and extent of fentanyl absorption across the buccal mucosa. FBT is indicated for the management of breakthrough pain (a transient flare of pain on a background of chronic pain otherwise controlled by treatment with opioids) in patients with cancer who are already receiving and who are tolerant to opioid therapy for their underlying persistent cancer pain. This study assessed the bioequivalence of a single 400-microg dose of FBT following buccal (i.e. above a molar tooth between the upper gum and cheek)

Incidence of high-frequency hearing loss after microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm.

OBJECT: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and discuss the pathogenesis of high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) after microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS). METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative audiogram data and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) from 94 patients who underwent MVD for HFS were analyzed. Pure tone audiometry at 0.25-2 kHz, 4 kHz, and 8 kHz was calculated for all individuals pre- and postoperatively ipsilateral and contralaterally. Intraoperative neurophysiological data were reviewed independently. An HFHL was defined

Auditory brainstem responses in a case of high-frequency conductive hearing loss.

Click-evoked auditory brainstem responses were measured in a patient with high-frequency conductive hearing loss. As is typical in cases of conductive hearing loss, Wave I latency was prolonged beyond normal limits. Interpeak latency differences were just below the lower limits of the normal range. The Wave V latency-intensity function, however, was abnormally steep. This pattern is explained by the hypothesis that the slope of the latency-intensity function is determined principally by the configuration of the hearing loss. In cases of high-frequency hearing loss (regardless of the etiology),

Noise-induced low- and high-frequency hearing losses in Finnish conscripts.

Thirty-nine otologically healthy military conscripts were examined at the beginning and at the end of their 1-year service. On entry, they all showed normal findings during clinical otolaryngological examinations. The test battery included both conventional (0.25-8 kHz) and high-frequency "electric bone-conduction" (0.5-20 kHz) audiometry (EBC). The median pure-tone right ear thresholds at the end of service were 5 dB worse over the frequency range of 2-8 kHz compared with the thresholds at the beginning of the service. The difference was statistically highly significant (p = 0.00035). The med

Prediction of hearing levels from acoustic reflex thresholds in persons with high-frequency hearing losses.

This study examined the precision of the bivariate method in subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. The current bivariate data effectively separated normal hearing subjects from those with pure tone averages of greater than 32 dB HL, in a manner consistent with the results of Popelka and Trumpf (1976) and Margolis and Fox (1977b). However, for persons with high-frequency losses the prediction of hearing levels from acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) appears to be complicated. Moderate hearing losses involving 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz ("speech frequencies") as well as higher frequ

Early signs of auditory aging: Hearing declines faster in individuals with extended high frequency hearing loss.

Hearing loss, particularly age-related hearing loss, significantly impacts health and quality of life worldwide. While much of the research has focused on older adults, the early stages of hearing decline remain relatively unexplored. Longitudinal studies examining hearing changes across the adult lifespan, especially at extended high frequencies (EHFs), are scarce. This prospective longitudinal study aimed to explore the rate of hearing threshold shift in young adults with clinically normal audiograms and to assess whether EHF hearing loss could predict future hearing decline in the standard

High-frequency hearing loss in chronic kidney disease: a frequency-specific analysis across renal function stages.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been associated with a wide range of neurological complications, yet the onset and pattern of hearing loss, particularly at high frequencies, remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate hearing function across different stages of renal impairment with a focus on frequency-specific thresholds. A total of 97 participants were retrospectively assessed and divided into three groups: preserved estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (n = 32), CKD without hemodialysis (n = 32), and patients undergoing hemodialysis (n = 33). Pure-tone audiome

A double-blind, randomized controlled trial exploring the efficacy of frequency lowering hearing aids in patients with high-frequency hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Whether linear frequency transposition (LFT) assists individuals with hearing difficulties has been studied for years, but no reliable comparison between LFT hearing aids (HAs) and conventional compression-type HAs has been conducted. Herein, we report on the first, relevant, double-blind, randomized controlled trial on this topic using a large sample size. We compared the efficacies of LFT HAs to those of compression-type HAs in patients with high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL); we also reviewed the literature. METHODS: A total of 103 patients were randomized into three groups: con

Exposure to loud noise, bilateral high-frequency hearing loss and coronary heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss is an indicator for chronic exposure to loud noise. This study aimed to examine the association between bilateral high-frequency hearing loss and the presence of coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: This study included 5223 participants aged 20-69 years who participated in the audiometry examination of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004. Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss was defined as the average high-frequency (3, 4 and 6 kHz) hearing threshold ≥25 dB in both ears. CHD was defined as self-reported diagnoses

High-frequency audiometry: a means for early diagnosis of noise-induced hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), an irreversible disorder, is a common problem in industrial settings. Early diagnosis of NIHL can help prevent the progression of hearing loss, especially in speech frequencies. For early diagnosis of NIHL, audiometry is performed routinely in conventional frequencies. We designed this study to compare the effect of noise on high-frequency audiometry (HFA) and conventional audiometry. In a historical cohort study, we compared hearing threshold and prevalence of hearing loss in conventional and high frequencies of audiometry among textile workers divided into

Effects of Hearing Loss on Interaural Time Difference Sensitivity at Low and High Frequencies.

While many studies have reported a loss of sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs) carried in the fine structure of low-frequency signals for listeners with hearing loss, relatively few data are available on the perception of ITDs carried in the envelope of high-frequency signals in this population. The relevant studies found stronger effects of hearing loss at high frequencies than at low frequencies in most cases, but small subject numbers and several confounding effects prevented strong conclusions from being drawn. In the present study, we revisited this question while addressing

Late onset and high-frequency dominant hearing loss in a family with MYH9 disorder.

MYH9 disorder is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder. We previously reported that it is caused by mutations in the gene for nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIA (NMMHC-IIA). MYH9 disorder causes congenital macrothrombocytopenia accompanied by progressive sensorineural hearing loss, nephropathy, and cataract. However, there are few reports that describe the audiological features of MYH9 disorder. The objective of this study was to characterize auditory and other phenotypes of patients with MYH9 disorder. We examined nine subjects from one Japanese family. Audiological, ophthalmological, hematologica

Exploring the Link between Serum Klotho and High-Frequency Hearing Loss in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Klotho is a protein with various biological functions, including anti-aging effects. Although research suggests Klotho plays a key role in auditory function, the relationship between serum Klotho levels and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) in older adults remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from individuals aged 70-79 years participating in the 2009-2010 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to assess the relationship between serum Klotho levels and HFHL. Restricted cubic splines were utilized t
