Are children with unilateral hearing loss more tired?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (USNHL) and unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL) have higher levels of fatigue than literature reported normal hearing (LRNH) children. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey utilizing the PedsQL™ Multidimensional Fatigue Scale administered to children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) and their parents at two tertiary care academic medical centers and a nationwide microtia/atresia conference. The PedsQL™ Multidimensional Fatigue Scale was used to compare child and parental proxy reports of fatigue a

Unilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Medical Context and Etiology.

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (USNHL) is known to impact on school performance and social skills during childhood, but the etiologies remain unclear. The aim of this study was to assess various etiologies and to study the clinical contexts in this population. METHODS: The study is a retrospective review. Characteristics of hearing loss (HL), audiometric parameters, imaging, and genetic and medical contexts were analyzed. RESULTS: Eighty children were included. USNHL was profound in 68%, could be progressive in 19%, and become bilateral in 7.5% of cases. Inner ear malformat

Differential vestibular dysfunction in sudden unilateral hearing loss.

Auditory and vestibular function was examined in 29 patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss to identify characteristic vestibulocochlear lesion patterns. In 45%, a vestibular lesion was found, of which 53% had a combined impairment of the cochlea and the ipsilateral posterior semicircular canal, possibly reflecting vascular disease in the common cochlear artery.

Effects of unilateral hearing loss upon educational achievement.

Recent evidence suggests that children with relatively minor hearing impairments may be at a developmental disadvantage. A survey of over 42,000 students was conducted and children with unilateral hearing losses were identified on the basis of audiometric testing. A comparison of the standardized achievement test scores obtained by the unilateral hearers, using class and national norms with a sibling control group, yielded no significant differences although the hearing-impaired group scored lower on all subscales. There were sex differences observed, however, with male unilateral hearers perf

Speech perception in noise in unilateral hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral hearing loss is characterized by a decrease of hearing in one ear only. In the presence of ambient noise, individuals with unilateral hearing loss are faced with greater difficulties understanding speech than normal listeners. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the speech perception of individuals with unilateral hearing loss in speech perception with and without competitive noise, before and after the hearing aid fitting process. METHODS: The study included 30 adults of both genders diagnosed with moderate or severe sensorineural unilateral hearing loss using the Hearing In Noi

Etiology of unilateral neural hearing loss in children.

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) can be caused by a variety of lesions of the inner ear and central nervous system. An inner hair cell or neural site of pathology must be suspected when otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are present, and inconsistent with audiologic data. We reviewed unilateral neural hearing loss (UNHL) in children, to better understand its etiology, clinical and audiologic features. DESIGN: Retrospective series. SETTING: Tertiary pediatric center. METHODS: From a database of 480 children with unilateral SNHL, 148 had OAE data. Patients with a neural patte

Unilateral otosclerosis and noise-induced occupational hearing loss.

The interaction between noise-induced hearing loss and otosclerosis remains unclear and controversial. In the present study, the effect of chronic noise exposure was examined in 31 patients with unilateral otosclerosis. Consideration was given to hearing loss at specific frequencies, the influence of age, and the effect of the size of the air-bone gap. A small, though statistically significant, protective effect of otosclerosis was demonstrated at 4 kHz. This effect was maintained despite advancing age. An apparent inverse relationship was found between the amount of hearing loss and the size

Hearing Stability in Patients With Unilateral Hearing Loss Due to Congenital CMV.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and severity of progressive hearing loss in both ears in a population of longitudinally-tracked patients with unilateral hearing loss due to congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). By determining the natural history of unilateral hearing loss due to cCMV infection, we aim to facilitate therapeutic recommendations. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTING: Two tertiary care hospitals. METHODS: Pure-tone averages (PTAs) based on yearly audiograms were calculated for each patient for both ears, and changes were assessed using a linear mixed-effects mod

Hearing with One Ear: Consequences and Treatments for Profound Unilateral Hearing Loss.

There is an increasing global recognition of the negative impact of hearing loss, and its association to many chronic health conditions. The deficits and disabilities associated with profound unilateral hearing loss, however, continue to be under-recognized and lack public awareness. Profound unilateral hearing loss significantly impairs spatial hearing abilities, which is reliant on the complex interaction of monaural and binaural hearing cues. Unilaterally deafened listeners lose access to critical binaural hearing cues. Consequently, this leads to a reduced ability to understand speech in c

The hearing benefit of cochlear implantation for individuals with unilateral hearing loss, but no tinnitus.

CONCLUSION: Cochlear implants improve the hearing abilities of individuals with unilateral hearing loss and no tinnitus. The benefit is no different from that seen in patients with unilateral hearing loss and incapacitating tinnitus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hearing outcomes after cochlear implantation in individuals with unilateral hearing loss and no tinnitus and compare them to those obtained in a similar group who had incapacitating tinnitus. METHODS: Six cases who did not experience tinnitus before operation and 15 subjects with pre-operative tinnitus were evaluated with a structured inte

Unilateral hearing loss in a 94-year-old patient.

A case report of a 94-year-old, previously well male patient who presented with fever thought to be caused by community acquired pneumonia, new unilateral hearing loss and reduced consciousness. Despite antibiotic treatment he continued to deteriorate. Brain imaging with computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left otomastoiditis with osteomyelitis of the skull base, associated with an adjacent subdural empyema. He was also found to have a venous sinus thrombosis, most likely secondary to otitis media. He was managed with intravenous antibiotics, anticoagulation, grommet

Unilateral hearing loss in children with shunt-treated hydrocephalus.

This study investigated the characteristics of hearing loss in children with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunted hydrocephalus. Twelve hydrocephalic children with patent VP shunts participated. The etiology of the hydrocephalus was either intraventricular hemorrhage or spina bifida. Audiometric examination included pure-tone air conduction thresholds, tympanometry, contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs), and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). A unilateral, high-frequency, cochlear hearing loss was found in the ear ipsilateral to the shunt placement in 10

Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss: analysis of 200 consecutive cases.

The spectrum of diseases diagnosed and the protocol used in the investigation of 200 consecutive patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is presented. The diagnostic tests found most useful in defining the site of the lesion were a combination of a well-masked pure tone audiogram, speech discrimination score (SDS), acoustic reflex test (ART), and a vestibular evaluation using photoelectric nystagmography (PENG) and the Torok Monothermal Differential Caloric Test. With this protocol, the site of the lesion was correctly defined in 94% of patients with unilateral progressive S

Sudden Unilateral Hearing Loss and Vertigo in an Adolescent: Viral Labyrinthitis Versus Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Labyrinthitis and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) are uncommon in children and are both considered otologic emergencies, as delayed diagnosis can lead to permanent disability. We describe a 15-year-old boy with a history of focal cortical dysplasia and a single remote seizure who presented with abrupt left-sided hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, nausea, and headache. Neurologic examination revealed no focal deficits; however, marching Romberg testing demonstrated instability, and otoscopy revealed only a small left middle-ear effusion. Laboratory studies, including complete

Unilateral, permanent hearing loss following severe COVID-19 infection.

Hearing loss following COVID-19 infection has been scarcely reported in the literature.A previously well middle-aged man presented to the emergency department with breathlessness and cough 8 days after testing positive for COVID-19 in the community. The patient was treated in the intensive care unit due to respiratory failure. Following extubation and step down to ward-level care 2 months later, the patient reported sudden left-sided hearing loss and tinnitus. Ear examination was unremarkable and pure tone audiometry revealed profound left sensorineural hearing loss. MRI of the internal acoust
