A Calibrated Method of Massage Therapy Decreases Systolic Blood Pressure Concomitant With Changes in Heart Rate Variability in Male Rats.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for applying calibrated manual massage pressures by using commonly available, inexpensive sphygmomanometer parts and validate the use of this approach as a quantitative method of applying massage therapy to rodents. METHODS: Massage pressures were monitored by using a modified neonatal blood pressure (BP) cuff attached to an aneroid gauge. Lightly anesthetized rats were stroked on the ventral abdomen for 5 minutes at pressures of 20 mm Hg and 40 mm Hg. Blood pressure was monitored noninvasively for 20 minutes following massage thera

Classical back massage is associated with lower heart rate and sustained mean skin conductance during recovery after cognitive load: an exploratory controlled pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Physiological responses after cognitive load may differ across cardiovascular measures and electrodermal activity (EDA). METHODS: This controlled exploratory pilot study compared heart-rate and phase-averaged mean skin-conductance responses during a 15-min post-task period conducted under two conditions: classical back massage and passive prone rest. After eligibility verification and physiological signal-quality inspection, the final analytical sample included 48 participants: 24 in the classical massage condition and 24 in the passive rest condition. Recordings were segmented

Effect of Massage on Stress Indicators in Recreational Horses-A Pilot Study.

This pilot study investigated the effects of massage therapy on stress indicators in recreational horses, focusing on salivary cortisol levels, heart rate and conflict behaviors. Five recreational horses were analyzed under two experimental conditions: without and with massage treatments before riding sessions. Saliva samples were collected at four specific intervals in each condition to measure cortisol concentrations using an ELISA test. Observations of behavioral indicators and heart-rate monitoring complemented the physiological data. The results revealed that massage significantly reduced

Biomedical aspects of cardiac massage in experiments and clinical practice.

Despite current successes in modern cardiology and heart surgery, the problem of restoring and maintaining cardiac function in cases of sudden arrest or ventricular insufficiency is still urgent. Different methods of mechanically assisting the heart and replacing its pumping function exist, and direct mechanical cardiac massage (DMCM) is one of the more important. Experimental results with dogs and calves on 2- to 4-h DMCM, cardiac massage lasting for up to 48 h, subsequent restoration of cardiac activity, and cardiac massage during experimentally induced myocardial infarction permitted clinic

Cardiac arrest--successful resuscitation in the hospital outside the operating rooms.

It is believed that if physicians generally can bring themselves to carry out the drastic action necessary, the benefits of cardiac massage for patients with reflex inhibition of heartbeat can be extended to most cases of this kind occurring anywhere in a hospital, even though there is not time to summon a surgeon or anesthesiologist. This concept requires that attending physicians be prepared to recognize and treat cardiac arrest in salvageable patients. To carry out massage of the heart, a short incision must be made beneath the left breast to permit grasping the heart and starting it again.

Value of physical and pharmacological tests in predicting intrinsic and extrinsic sick sinus syndrome.

We studied 13 patients with sick sinus syndrome using various physical (postural reflex testing. Valsalva manoeuvre, carotid sinus massage), pharmacological (intravenous isoprenaline, atropine, neostigmine and total autonomic blockade) and electrophysiological tests in order to identify simple non-invasive markers of intrinsic sick sinus syndrome. Following autonomic blockade, 6 patients had normal and the remaining 7 had an abnormal intrinsic heart rate. Electrophysiological testing revealed abnormal sinus node parameters in 8 (62%) subjects in the basal state and 11 (85%) after autonomic blo

Massage therapy research review.

Moderate pressure massage has contributed to many positive effects including increased weight gain in preterm infants, reduced pain in different syndromes including fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, enhanced attentiveness, reduced depression and enhanced immune function (increased natural killer cells and natural killer cell activity).Surprisingly, these recent studies have not been reviewed, highlighting the need for the current review. When moderate and light pressure massage have been compared in laboratory studies, moderate pressure massage reduced depression, anxiety and heart rate,
