Objective of the paper was to determine the fetal heart rate (FHR) changes that occur in preterm fetuses whose mothers have suffered antepartum bleeding, versus uncomplicated controls. Over a 12-year span, 91 patients with significant antenatal bleeding (bleeding requiring inhospital observation) were examined and compared to 75 controls with uncomplicated normal pregnancies. None of the women were in labor and all were evaluated at 25-37 weeks' gestation. Excluded were: patients with any other complication (i.e., premature rupture of membranes, intrauterine growth retardation, diabetes, hyper

The sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern is significantly associated with severe fetal anaemia when seen in the antenatal period. Strict adherence to definition is important, as pseudosinusoidal patterns do not have the same grave prognostic significance. If this fetal heart rate pattern is seen antenatally it is our contention that the baby should be delivered urgently by Caesarean section, unless the fetal anaemia can be treated in utero.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies report a decrease of fetal heart rate (FHR) short-term variation (STV) after corticosteroids for improvement of fetal maturity and advice not to deliver a fetus for low STV within 2-3days after corticosteroids. However, literature is not unanimous in this respect. This study intends to asses STV longitudinally after corticosteroid administration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study in a tertiary perinatal centre from 2009 to 2015 included all women who had been treated with corticosteroids at gestational age of 26-34 weeks, had a computerized cardi

Management of patients during labor is often based upon interpretation of electronic fetal heart rate tracings. Misdiagnoses of these records can lead to inappropriate actions, including cesarean delivery for presumed fetal distress. This case study, using a heart rate tracing from a patient with intrauterine fetal death, describes the findings, reviews the origin of the electronic signal, and outlines the means to distinguish the fetal and maternal cardiac impulses.

Two patients with severe rhesus isoimmunization had sinusoidal fetal heart rate patterns following intrauterine fetal transfusion. A consistent temporal relationship between fetal transfusion and sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern was observed. Survival of a fetus who had a sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern after each of three transfusions suggests that this pattern may not be ominous when observed transiently after fetal transfusion.

Fetal heart sound is an important part of fetal monitoring and has attracted extensive research and attention from scholars at home and abroad in recent years. The fetal heart rate, extracted from the fetal heart sound signal, is one of the important indicators that reflect the health of the fetus in the womb. In this study, a maternal-fetal Holter monitor based on f ECG technology was used to collect maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate, and uterine contractions signals, isolate the fetal heart rate, and design an algorithm to extract the fetal heart rate baseline, acceleration, variation, w

We studied the nonstress test (NST) results and other perinatal features of 44 children with cerebral palsy, who had fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns during labor suggesting preexisting injury. This was a retrospective, descriptive study. All fetuses persistently showed absent variability and small, variable decelerations, with overshoot from the onset of monitoring during labor. During the initial NST, 84.1% of fetuses revealed normal reactive NST patterns (three with decelerations). Six fetuses (15.9%) had nonreactive NST results (three with decelerations). The conversion of the reactive NST

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the ability of a clearly defined classification system for electronic fetal heart rate monitoring to predict early neonatal outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: All labors of women with singleton pregnancies > or = 32 weeks' gestation electronically monitored at 2 institutions were examined. Tracings in the final hour before delivery were defined as normal, fetal stress, or fetal distress. After delivery, Apgar scores, cord blood gas values, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit were examined as measures of early neonatal outcome.
RESULTS: Among

The perinatal results of the widespread adoption of the continuous electronic fetal heart rate monitoring during labor remain rather disappointing. This is due in part to a lack of consistent interpretation of the fetal heart tracings. Despite efforts by referral agencies over the past decade the situation has not improved. In defense of practitioners the heterogeneity and complexity of definitions and classifications patterns especially morphological currently proposed should be noted. Whereas with the recent advances in the field of neuroscience, it is now possible to visualize the chain of

OBJECTIVES: It was the aim of this study to examine intrapartum fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns in oligohydramnios.
METHODS: Subjects comprised 24 singleton pregnant women diagnosed with oligohydramnios and 470 controls. FHR patterns were analyzed at the end of the first stage and throughout the whole second stage of labor. Numbers of variable deceleration (VD), early deceleration (ED), late deceleration (LD) and prolonged deceleration (PD) per contraction were counted.
RESULTS: Frequencies of decelerations in oligohydramnios and controls were 5.4 +/- 14.5 and 2.0 +/- 6.6% for ED, 0.0 and 0.

Fetal heart rate monitoring was introduced in the 1960s. After a number of randomized controlled trials in the mid 1980s, doubt arose regarding the efficacy of fetal heart rate monitoring in improving fetal outcome. The potential reasons why fetal heart rate monitoring has not been shown to be efficacious are (1) use of an outcome measure that is not related to variant fetal heart rate monitoring patterns, (2) lack of standardized interpretation of fetal heart rate patterns, (3) disagreement regarding algorithms for intervention of specific fetal heart rate patterns, and (4) the inability to d

Of 1280 consecutive fetuses monitored internally with a scalp electrode for at least 10 minutes during labor, 54 (4.2%) demonstrated the sinusoidal heart rate (SHR) pattern. Seven of these demonstrated the SHR pattern for more than 90 minutes. In six of these seven cases, the SHR pattern occurred during oxytocin administration. The SHR group did not differ from the 1226 fetuses not demonstrating the SHR pattern (NSHR group) in Apgar scores, incidence of other fetal heart rate abnormalities, or passage of meconium. The scalp pH was obtained from three fetuses in the SHR group and was above 7.30

Twenty-five pregnant women without complications underwent fetal heart rate evaluation during a program involving exercise at a relative intensity of 61% to 73% of maximal capacity during the course of the pregnancy. Assessment of the influence of gestational age on the fetal heart rate response to exercise and evaluation of the course of fetal heart rate recovery were the main goals of the study. The results of the study confirmed previous findings that fetal heart rate is accelerated after maternal exercise. However, contrary to other studies we found no effect of gestational age on the feta

Intrapartum fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations may represent interrupted oxygen transfer to the fetus. In many cases, these interruptions are transient and do not result in progressive fetal acidemia with risk for asphyxia and neurological compromise. When significant FHR decelerations are present, reversible causes of reduced fetal oxygen delivery should be considered and corrective measures should be undertaken to optimize oxygenation. In this review, we describe potential intrapartum causes of reduced fetal oxygen delivery and the efficacy of common interventions for an abnormal FHR traci
